I read thru the whole huge Christmas gift idea thread that is now somewhere down on page 3 or 5. There were a lot of ideas in there, but most of them were recipes. I'm wondering what type of crafts do you make for gifts?
I'm planning one doing magnetic bookmarks, cards and jewelry. What else could I make? (besides bake goods) What are your projects for gifts?
If you sew, you can make pillowcases for everyone. Bright prints work well for children, satin for women and flannel for men. You could also make lap throws to use while watching tv when it's chilly. You don't need a pattern, just measure one of your pillowcases and add 1/4 to 1/2 inch extra for a seam allowance. Placemats are quick and easy to make too.
Last year I made planners for people for Christmas. I got the notebooks from Target that close with a snap or the covered elastic, can't remember, and have divider folders in them - and covered them with various papers, stickers, embellishments. They were a huge hit and were easy and fairly cheap to do. I have also given coasters which were a big hit and card sets. Tags as gifts too. Scrapbooks (big or small) make good gifts. I made a CD scrapbook (found here of course and yes, its made out of old CDs and covered with paper) for a pre teen and that was a hit with the kids.
As there a particular group or age you were looking for gift ideas for?
And the pillow idea mentioned above is a good idea too. My daughter, when she was younger, made travel pillows for all of her cousins and they loved them - first because they came from Briana who they adore and second she picked out the fabric especially for that particular child to match their likes and personalities. All the kids took them whenever they travelled, slept over night somewhere. We even got some back when they were all threadbare for a "new" pillow. Like that was going to happen! Mary

I kind of want to stick to stamping crafts. I have a question on the coasters. I've seen lots of cute things made with coasters, where is everyone getting the coasters? Are you covering them with paper or stamping on them?
I get my coasters at Home Depot, they are a tumbled tile, not a smooth finish on them. And stamp right on them - I used stayzon. There is a tutorial on here on stamping in tiles, I think its in the resource section. You get nine tiles to a box. Super easy to do and they turn out great!
I'm giving out name frames, frap bottles filled with Christmas candies and cocoa, coaster calendars, squash book and bound coaster brag books, and for my MIL, I decorated a lunch box tin and turned it into a recipe tin with dividers. Then I'll have my kids write out their favorite recipes on recipe cards and put them in the box for her. I am also planning on making several lighted glass blocks (do a search in the gallery for those... they're amazing!), to give out to my family and friends.

and for the people I need a little something for I'm gonna do a holiday version of these mini comp books since these were a big hit with my church sisters;
I'm trying scarves, especially for those out of town since they are light and easy to mail! I figure they can wear them, or use them as a decorative table runner or something.
Would love to see a photo of the scarves when you finish! THanks for all the great ideas! I want to try that clipboard calendar. I made some mini coaster calendars this past weekend with my stamp camp, but don't have photos yet.
I tried out the coaster calendar and decided I would make a few as gifts since it could hold a picture too (the galleries have lots of wonderful examples). I might do some nugget or other little boxes. Some teabag holders for good friends I don't see very often. Cards are my big make-to-give at xmas; the rest will be about making ornaments with the kids so they can decorate the tree with their own.
I used 1 1/2" wooden blocks from Hobby Lobby and punched out pattern paper squares with my 1 3/8" square punch. Adhered with Modge Podge (only on wood between paper layers, but not on the top of the paper) and then stamped my letters with Black Craft ink. I did christmas words and also family words. For example, our last name is 6 letters long, so did six blocks and stamped our name, then turned them all once and stamped {love}, then turned and stamped, etc etc so that all six sides of the blocks have letters to spell out 6 different family related words.
I adore the glass blocks and would love to make them, but am too chicken, I guess! hehe
thanks for mentioning my blocks! I've got tutorials for everything from altered tins to beaded pens to post it holders to notebooks, etc. I'm trying to make most of my gifts this year too!
How about a magnetic board ? I made one using a 12 x 12 tin then coverd it with a few different papers and ribbon, drill holes in top at side to add ribbon to hang the board. Its really cute, you can even make your own magnets using glass blobs ( add image to back of glass and attach magnet to back.) I plan on making a few for Christmas gifts this year. Hope this helps.
