For those of you who have had the chance to compare the two. Do you have a preference and why? I'm looking at getting some Prismacolor ones only because they are a little cheaper but am I going to be unhappy?

Both markers work well, I would say Copic has a bit of advantage over Prismacolors. The difference is when you run out of ink you can refill the Copics while you will toss the Prismas. Make sense? It's really a price vs. cost thing. Up front the Copics seem more expensive but over the long haul they work out to be a bit cheaper since you can replace the nibs and refill the inks! HTH!
I have some Prismas, but have actually had 2 dry up on me already. And they were colors that I did not use excessively. I had heard this can sometimes be a problem with them. Since they are not refillable, I will have to find replacements. A pain. Other than that, they color quite nicely.
sounds like the copics are the ticket. I've seen sets that I can get for about $3 a pen which seens like a deal but there are probably colors in them that I may not want which would bump up the cost per pen.

So, my question is if anyone has had a copic dry out? I guess I don't color so very much... will the copics and prismacolors last about the same amount of time (assuming that you don't end up with a 'dry' marker for no good reason!)? I know you can refill them, but will I NEED to (and when)?:confused:

I am also interested in this thread as I am thinking of putting these little diddies on my christmas list. I am actually quite afraid of them and for the cost would like to get my best bang for the buck and hope I use them!
I have had 3 Copic colors that need refilled so far (after many months of daily use). Two are ones I use for sky, so they are used for big areas and another is a green that I use for grass and trees.
I use mine probably much more than most people, because I'm stamping and coloring pretty much full time now. I just keep refills for my most used colors handy. It looks like one refill will fill a pen 4-5 times. All my tips (which are replaceable) look brand new.

If I were to just get started with the markers
What colors would you suggest ? I have a tight budget but love the look of the copic markers - any suggestions for me

I'd love to address this question. Prismacolors are the very best. But make sure you get the top quality. I use my pencils all the time. I also use them to add opaque textures to my watercolor paintings. I have the 100 pencil set. There is no pencil as soft, the colors blend easily, great to shade with lately I use them for distressing the edges of my papers. Keep them sharp and be careful not to drop them as they will break inside the wood of the pencil.

Ok, one thing that I HAVE noticed since last time I posted... Prismacolors have a large chisel end and a small pen like end. Copics have a brush end and a chisel. That might make a difference in what you'll use it for. Also, HL has the 40% off coupon again this week, makes them about the same price as the prismas - I bought a few last week to "test".

Maybe Jeanne can answer this one. But as I have been looking at them, the Manga sets seem to have the colors I like more. Does that sound about right?

I have both kinds of markers, and I like them both. You can see several examples in my gallery where I used just Prismacolors, then when I got Copics, I started using them together. I started with 70ish Prismacolor markers and liked them just fine. However, the color selection is a little lacking, especially if you are looking for lighter, more subtle colors. So, when carpediemstore had the original Copics (not sketch) on sale, I bought around 30 of those. I chose the originals because I don't like the brush/chisel tip combo on the sketches. I suppose it could be because I got used to the Prismacolors with the small tip/chisel combo, but I like to use the small tip for coloring. I also wanted to be able to use the airbrush system, which you can only use with originals or sketch. I don't use either of these markers every day, so quite frankly, it was not important to me to get refillable markers. If you do go with Copics, I would suggest you handpick your colors, because when you buy sets, you will get a lot of colors you may not use. Good luck with your decision!
Thanks for all the advise ladies, I have been watching a few threads to try and decide what will go on my wish list and Connie, you are right, I think that I need to hand pick my colors. I just wish I could try one in person and no one around here carries them......grrrrrrrrrrr, what is a girl to do!?

Actually Copic Original come with a fine bullet tip and a chisel tip, and the bullet tip on the Copic is more compact/finer than the Prismacolor, lending even greater control when working with detailed images. ;)
There are three types of Copic Markers, and perhaps some will find this information useful:
Ann, I bought a 72 color set of Prismacolors. They are nice. Then, I got my hands on some Copics; for the price, they are more versatile, due to replaceable nibs, and being refillable, and the Original/Sketch versions compatible with the Airbrush system, if I chose to experiment with that. ;)
I can only speak from my personal preference, but, I'm always willing to invest a little more up front if it gives me greater versatility and longevity. I must admit, the fact that Copics are not disposable, but, refillable, is a *huge* plus in my book.

Well, I got a 72 pen set off ebay and it has a nice blend of greens, blues, pinks, reds, yellows and oranges and not too many greys. It was my present to me from the money I made off my card sale. Can't wait to try them out!

Congrats on your purchase. I have Prismacolors, primarily because my DH has a set of 24 that he bought 15 or so years ago for some work he did. He created a couple of large poster-sized items for his mom, and the markers have been sitting around ever since. I got the bug to try them and when I pulled them out, EVERY one of them still worked! There are one or 2 that are a bit dried out on the fine tip end, but I was pleasantly surprised that these pens were still working after so long! So, I purchased a few more and have slowly added to the collection.
I would love to get some Copics but simply haven't been able to justify the cost yet. I'd love to know what colors people use the most, so I could start with a few and build from there.
