Default Slit Punch Tips

Yeah, I'm slower than molasses . . . I know it! I admit it! I'm OK with it!

But, for anybody else who has struggled with how to get the slit punch to work without shaving off pieces of your focal image to get it to fit proper on the mat layer that has the slit punches, read on. Pics are in post #7 in this thread.

I finally realized I needed to cut my mat piece 1/2" larger
than the focal image piece.

I also realized that if I used a Sharpie marker ON THE
BACK SIDE (silver/metal) OF THE PUNCH, I could make
some register marks/cross hairs so I know where each
of the 3 little bumps on the black plastic are
located--obviously, once you slide the punch into the
paper, if working with the punch upside down, you
can't see where the plastic part's register marks are.

SO, then I laid my focal image piece on to the BACK
SIDE OF THE mat, and traced the edges where I wished
to punch the slit with a pencil.

Then, making sure the slit punch is upside down, I
lined up those black Sharpie marks along that pencil
line!* When you flip the piece over, the pencil lines
are not visible, of course, so no need to erase.

Perfect fit every time!

Anyhoo--it took me a whole morning to figure the above out . . . and it's highly likely that many of you ALREADY figured it out loooooooong ago . . .

But . . . just maybe . . . it'll be useful to somebody . . . possibly????

LOLLOLLOL!

Julie-

THANK YOU SO MUCH!! I have a stamp camp tonight and we are using the slit punch on one of the cards, and I was racking my brain for an easy way to explain how to punch the slit in the right place. You have come to my rescue! I'm going to type up your instructions (hope you don't mind...I'll give you credit!) and hand them out to anyone who orders the slit punch.

I so appreciate your artistic talent and now your logistical genius!!!

And Her Highness strikes again! I just received mine earlier this week. I had read a couple of posts on it but haven't really tried it out... I'm printing this out so I know how to use it. THANK YOU!

OK, I guess I'm a bit slower. Is there any way you could post a picture of what you have done? It sounds like it would make all the post punch trimming a heck of a lot easier, but I'm just not getting it. I feel a little silly for asking, but you've peaked my curiosity!!

I just remembered that I had downloaded a template made by Robin Mower for the slit punch awhile back. I will try to attach it here for everyone while we're on the subject.

Oh, I'm so glad someone resurrected this thread! I knew I had seen it months ago, but couldn't find again it no matter how I searched. I even started a thread asking if anyone else could find it.

Thank you sooo much! Now I can love my slit punch!

I could not take the time to figure out how to have it hold anything.
I just used it when making a "matchbook" card.
Doing the punch first then folding the other end into it THEN make the fold to fit the slit. It works great that way. Now off to try and do it for holding something.

I love it when we get something like this - it helps us all so much to share our knowledge, our Ahah!! moments and our "dang, that didn't work so great!" things too.

I've been looking at that slit punch alot, and thinking, "hmmm should I get that?" no don't need it yet. but maybe soon, and now that there's some tips to using the thing, maybe sooner than later.

Thanks for sharing your ideas, tips and creativity everyone - you're awesome!!

Thank you so much Julie! You ladies are so amazing! I hadn't noticed the register marks before and always wondered how everyone else's cards were so perfect and mine so sloppy. I seriously need Stampin' for Dummies. Just explain everything to me, like this, so that I can get be a stellar demo like you all. Now, can you help me find some WS?? JK
