Default Cricut vs. Cricut Expressions...

OK...So, I'm like a real dork..

At work today we were talking about Cricut and Cricut Expressions. What's the difference between them?

I believe the expressions is able to cut 12 X 12. They are having a great sale at the provocraft website. If you are a demo (ctmh, stampin up ect.....) you can get one for under 300.00 check it out it is a great deal.

Here's the link. Sorry but you do have to be a demo of some sort to get the deal.

That's what I thought..That it would cut 12 x 12. I didn't know if that was the only difference.

Will the cartridges work the same? Wonder..

Thanks for the link...

actually using the cricut expressions you can cut something up to 23.5 inches x 11.5 inches I think it is.

There are other differences too, the expression allows you to:

* change the direction of the item you are cutting from landscape to portrait style
* Mix n Match .... allows you to create multiple creative features in one cutting session
* Allows you to choose the number of cuts
* Fit to Page mode
* Auto Fill - can fill the page with as many of the characters selected on display or that will fit the size of card selected
* Multi Cut - allows you to cut the cut lines several times allowing you to cut thin chipboard

There are some other things ........ that is just a few I quickly picked out of the handbook of the expression ....... I have only had mine since Thursday so haven't had a chance yet to play ...... hopefully tomorrow.

I saw one of the Expressions being demonstrated at JoAnn's the other day and "WOWSA"!!!!!!!!!!
She made this HUGE giraffe that was adorable,
another HUGE snowflake!
It made me kind of bummed that I didn't get this one, I have the first one, as I just accepted a preschool teacher position and see TONS of possibilities for the expression!:(

*Giddles* I just ordered mine from jkcrafts.com since I am not a Demo, they had the best price. I have struggled with this decission for about a week & greed won! JK. I use mine alot & I just got paid for some Wedding Invites & Thank You cards I did so I could justify it as reinvesting into my "business" Of course I don't think I will have have the need to make a 24" Wedding Invitation

I have had the regular Cricut since December and have loved it! I am planning on purchasing the Expression in the next few weeks. I will be able to do more with all the creative features and I want the two exclusive cartridges that come with it.

How much does the Expression retail for without the demo discount?

I am sure the price will come down .....

I think it started at $499, but most online retailers were going to be selling for around $350 ish. It could have come down even further, especially on ebay.

Mine was $308.00 for jkcrafts.com

There is a software coming out but you can only use it with your cartridges. There's info about it on provocraft's blog. I think it will sale for $89.00.

I am getting my Expression for around $308-319. I am also definitely buying the software in the late Fall/early Winter. I'm so excited for that. The software will have the ability to weld words together and a ton of other really cool things! Can't wait!

I just got my expression a day ago from ebay. I got it for $303 which included shipping. I also ordered a few extra cartridges from Hallmarkscrapbook.com and got the two cartridges I really wanted for $39 each. The ebay shipping took a little long in my opinion, but the hallmarkscrapbook.com order only took two days! (I paid a few dollars more for priority shipping)

I'm really happy with my decision. With the popularity of die cutting coming back, I really like the option of being able to cut out large letters, flourishes, scallopped edge pages, etc with the cricut. I don't do big die cut animals or anything that would detract from the photos, but I think that the more subtle scallopped shapes, etc will be lots of fun to cut out!

I have a couple questions regarding the Expression. First of all, where would you get paper 23.5" (except Martha Stewart)? Second, does anyone know if the software coming out will work with the original Cricut or just the Expression?

TIA!

The new software will work with the baby bug (Small Cricut). Over at the Cricut forum some of the ladies have been using gift wrap, & poster board for bigger shapes.

One of the other differences is that it will cut chipboard if you go over it several swipes but I know the small bug does this too but the motor is more set up for it on the Expressions.

It's almost twice as big as the small Cricut. I about fell over when I got mine. I have a Wishblade too & my Wishblade is smaller than the Cricut Expressions.

This is my second post for the day. I just jumped in & started posting. I post at some of the other big crafting forum so I am not too much of a stranger.

Thanks for the info. I know someone who might buy my first one so I can then justify buying the Expression. The only bummer...the Expression obviously won't fit it the green rolling tote I finally got around to buying.

Are the cartridges interchangeable? Can you use the Cricut cartridges with the Cricut Expressions?

Yes, it is my understanding that all the cartridges are interchangeable.

Welcome to Splitcoast! That's the way to do it, just jump on in, lol!

As far as the length of paper, Provocraft is catering to a large audience of teachers besides scrappers. A lot of the newer cartridges are geared toward educational themes. Schools generally have those lovely gargantuan rolls of colored paper that are idea for something like this.

As for us, we can buy large parent sheets of cardstock at art supply stores. Even Michaels has the Canson brand of parent sheets...lovely stuff in lots of colors. It's by the watercolor paper and other artist pads.

Cricut also makes packs of 12x24 cardstock in pastels, brights, and black and white. You can get those at AC Moore.

My preschool has cardstock that is larger too. Those big rolls of paper are thin paper that you'd use to cover the bulletin board.

I'm getting my classroom ready this week and am bummed that I can't find a good cartridge for preschool. Their teacher cartridges are better for elementary-age children. I do like one of their cartridges that has a train on it. I could make trains for my room!

I didn't even think about gift wrap paper. That's a great idea too! I wonder if they make acid free gift wrap.....
