Pam:
I have always been camera-challenged. So, when I first started a gallery I had my husband take pictures. Then I decided his timing was not my timing and he didn't really show off my work the way I wanted it to be shown. So, I just HAD to learn to take my own pictures. I don't always do well and sometimes my colors aren't always right, but I try. I think the trick is to keep on trying. At some point experience will make you better.

There are other threads on SCS about one's photography. Lots of the talented people on here are also very good in this area. Look for those threads. It's well worth the read. It made me understand the art of photography a little bit more.

Good luck in this new learning curve.

Pam...this can be hard.. Several different ideas:

1. I recently purchased a lighting kit that is designed to take pictures of eBay items..I use it to take photos of cards. I first saw it on Taylor's blog, but I cannot find the link...:( You can see it here: Sets up like a little studio. Make sure you go to Amazon through the link on the SCS homepage so the community gets a little kick back...just a little way to give back to the community! ;)

2. Sometimes I take my photos up to the only room in my home that gets direct sunlight through the window..it's the girls bathroom, but I have a vanity and lamp set up in there. This works better in the winter because the summer sun is too high to come directly in the window. Direct, natural light is the best!

3. Sometimes I take them outside...I'll make a little set up on rocks or even on top of the BBQ grill.

4. Some folks I know make a little backdrop on the seat of a chair to cover the seat and back with white cardstock. Then they prop their card and some accessories up and click!

5. Last resort for me is to set the stuff up at my actual stamping work station and hit it with my OTT light.

Best advise I got was to take the photo without flash. I still have lots to learn, so I'll be reading other's advice, too! I have the Rebel camera, but it hasn't solved all my issues! ;)

Holy Smokes, I just saw Krabearkub's tutorial on his pictures! Wowzer he has quite the set up. :-)

Mine is much simplier.
-I use a regular digital camera
-I layered several cream colored cloth napkins on top of my dining buffet which is by a window
-I accidentally placed my son's teddy bear gift on top (to escape prying fingers) and it's now become part of the background
-I wait until the late morning to take pictures
-I take AT LEAST 20 pictures of each card JUST to get maybe one good shot!

I noticed a HUGE difference in comments on my cards after I took a pic rather than using a scanner. The old pics in my gallery are by scanner and you can really see the difference.

Good luck!

I too am camera challenged so I usually scan mine. But if you can get the perfect light they look great taken outdoors. Just don't do what I did. I set my card on the deck railing to take the picture, the wind kicked up and blew it off into the mud! My DH was inside and heard me yell NOOOOOO! and said he instantly knew what had happened. The few cards I have taken successful pictures of I must have taken at least twenty pictures (seriously) before I was satisfied.

I find that taking them in natural daylight is best for me without flash. I get wonderful morning light though the windows behind my stamping area. Make sure the light is behind you when you set up to take your pictures. I have also taken them outside on to the stone wall with flowers behind them. You'll get the hang of it, just keep at it!!

I've had great success with my Ott light to get the colors true. In fact, I want another one to put on the other side of the card. I try to use natural morning light as well. I use a piece of white bristol board and also put a piece of white on the side of the card that is not nearest the window. It really helps keep you from getting a darker reflection on one side of your card. Set your camera to macro setting (you should probably see a little flower symbol) and, yes, don't use a flash. If you do a search on studio photo box, you will come across a thread that shows you how to build one from a cardboard box. There is a cool turtorial on a photo website that shows you how to make it. Several people have done this. You can take an infinity photo, where the card looks like it is floating in a sea of white. I think Walmart also sells them.
