TLC#15 - Emerging Color

If you have never done a Technique Lovers Challenge, why not start now? All the challenges are open to anyone and everyone who would like to play along, and we would love for you to join us!

Please remember to put TLC15 in the keywords section when you upload, and come back to this thread and post a link to it so we can admire your work.

This week we will be doing a technique called Emerging Color. A few months ago, this card by our own lovely and talented Michelerey caught my eye:

Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

She graciously shared the directions with me, and I'm sharing them with you!

The emerging color technique is really quite fun to do. Start by stamping some solid images in a couple of different colors on US White or Vanilla. Next, stamp some other images randomly over the others using VersaMark. While the VersaMark is good and sticky, sprinkle on some Clear Embossing Powder and emboss. Take a foam brayer and ink it up good with a really dark color ink, brayer this evenly over your stamped and embossed cardstock. Anywhere you have the embossing, the ink will be resisted and the
underlying colors will show through. Keep brayering until you have the cardstock covered to your satisfaction. I like to make it pretty dark. Use a Kleenex to wipe off excess ink from the embossed areas.

There is one more step you can do if you like [not done in the previous card], you can stamp a final image over the top of everything in an even darker ink. Wipe off the excess ink from the embossed areas. Here's a link to another card I did way back in October that will show you how the last step can
look.

Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

Thanks Michele for the great directions!

Here's the card I did:

If you would like even more inspiration, search the gallery for 'emerging color'

Have fun! I hope to have more time this week to leave comments on your cards, or even just look at them! The unpacking, getting settled, and entertaining the kids now that school is out is taking up all my time!

Beth this sounds great. I just wanted to let you know that you second link there isn't working.

I can't wait to try this. I'm always up for something new with embossing. I so love that stuff.

Default emerging color question

Beth,
When you stamp the first ones in a couple of colors (prior to using the versamark) are they in Classic or Craft ink? I am anxious to try this--sounds alot like emboss resist. Thanks for this challenge!

this is a cool technique... I don't know if I have the correct stamps for this... I need to get a brayer also... I never knew what to do with one until I started coming here - lol!

Wow! I'm so honored that Beth choose to highlight my cards for the technique challenge this week. I did get the idea from someone else on here first. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone else's creations with this fun technique!

I thought I'd answer Kathy's question on here too in case others were wondering. You can use Craft or Classic Inks to stamp your underlying images. If you use Craft Inks, just be sure they are completely dry before sprinkling on your Clear Embossing Powder. Otherwise the EP will stick to the Craft Ink too and you'll get a totally different look! Check out the second link that Beth posted in the initial post and you'll see what I mean! I used some Craft Ink on that one and didn't wait for it to dry (patience not being my long suit ;) ). I decided the mistake was okay in that case since it added more texture and looked like crumpled fall leaves. It wouldn't work well with some images though.

Thanks, Beth! Have fun everyone! I can't wait to be inspired!

I have a question...when (if) you stamp a final image over everything, can you stamp on the embossed parts or do you need to avoid them? I tried and got a slippery mess. (I have very little experience with embossing.)

Thanks!

Again, I thought I'd answer here in case someone else had the same question as Michele (by the way, great spelling of the name!).

If you stamp a final image over the top of everything, you can stamp over the embossed areas too. Actually you kind of want to as this gives a cool "disappearing image effect" when you are done. Just stamp carefully as the embossed areas will be slick. After stamping, carefully wipe the excess ink off the embossed areas with a clean tissue. Where you have embossing, the ink will not stick, where you didn't the ink will soak in. Makes a very cool effect.

Hope that helps!

I really like this technique!! But I didn't feel like dragging my brayer out, so I used a cotton ball. Instead of pouncing it, like a sponge, I rubbed it across the card... cotton really holds ink well, but doesn't suck up the ink. So they're a great alternative if you don't have a brayer for techniques like this.

I got mine done for this challenge. I do like playing with this technique. This also fits the color challenge for last week.

I did something cool in the past which I consider a variation of emerging color. Instead of randomly putting color down and then randomly clear embossing images over top of that to get a somewhat abstract design, this is what I have done:

Using a 2-step stampin' set, stamp the smaller of the two images with color.
Over-stamp with the larger, corresponding stamp with versamark and clear emboss. Brayer, sponge or as Darttella did, use a cotton ball to put color over all. This gives a more deliberate look than doing it randomly.

I don't know how to post a link, but I have 2 examples of this on the first page of my gallery. My card entitled "TT set sampler #3" was cased from Porchlight who cased it from StampinFlo. For "Pink on Pink", I used Watercolor Garden 2.

Thought someone might like to try this.

I've never done this technique before, so it was great learning something new. I wasn't entirely happy with it, but it's starting to grow on me.

I didn't like it at first, but it is growing on me. I have enjoyed looking at all the posted creations while I was waiting for it to upload, thanks for always providing challenges that take me out of my comfort zone. I know all these challenges are slowly making me a better stamper. I also try to pull out a stamp set that hasn't been loved in a while to complete the challenge, so I am using more techniques and more stamps!

Okay, I am going to try and post once the kiddos are in bed. I have been anxious to play all day but I offered substitute daycare to 2 kids this week so I will have to find time to stamp at night. I am itching to use my new Mixed Bouquet...I think it will work with this technique.

Here's mine. Not sure if I really like the card. I think I'd like it with a lighter color on top. So, I'm gonna play with it some more when I have time. I also can't figure out how to put the card into the post like you all do. I always save it to my favorites, and pull it out from there.

This is my second attempt. The 1st color combo was awful. This was a little better. I don't have a sponge brayer so I had to use the hard roller. I don't think I got as smooth coverage as the sponge brayer would have given.

I added my 2nd attempt as well. I love it...

I had a really hard time with this challenge. I just can't seem to envision the end result with all the layers. This is my fourth attempt (the only one I'm not "too" terribly embarassed to post).

Okay. It took me several tries to get the hang of this, but I really like how it looks when it's done "right" so I will keep trying. Thanks for the inspiration, Michele, and the suggestion, Beth. Also, thanks to Dartella for the great idea about the cotton balls and to Kathy S. for pointing out how cool it is to do the embossing to match the images!

OK - let me ask a clarifying question - so this is basically like the Jospeh's coat one witha twist - no brayering first - jsut stamp color to papaer using solid images - IE the circles?

Not trying to be thick here - just trying to understand before I get frustrated! LOL!

There's a lot of attempts in my trash can today but here's my favorite. It takes some work to think in 'layers'.

To answer Kate and anyone else who may be wondering...Yes, this is very similar to Joseph's Coat except you don't brayer the underlying color on. Instead you randomly stamp it on with a stamp (or two or three or...). It works best if you use a solid image stamp, but you don't have to. For instance, take a good look at the "too cute" baby card that Jus Colorado just posted above. I believe it is her 3rd link.

Just experiment and have fun! Be sure to post what you create so we can all see it. I'm lovin' everything that has been posted and have gotten some great ideas!

This was a new idea for me and my first attempt needs a little deeper color for the top layer, so I'm going to post this for now and try again later in the week and see if I can get more of what I was mentally picturing. I'm not totally sure I did it right, but do want to try it again. I do like the overall effect on the cards I've viewed, you gals are very talented.
