this looks pretty good kar, I've certainly never seen a 6 mp camera for a price like that. it would be nice to have more than 3x optical zoom, but you just don't get that for anywhere near this price. only other thing you'd need to get is a larger memory card - at least 128 MB. those can be found at Target or anywhere else for $50 ish. looks good!

6.1 megapixels is probably more than you really need. Cameras in the 3 megapixel range can print pics up to 8x10 without a loss of quality. They're also cheaper and the pics will take up less room on your hard drive.
A couple of things concern me on the camera...the most is the battery. It looks like it's probably a proprietary rechargable battery. Meaning that if you want a back up battery, you're going to pay through the nose for it.
The other biggie is that it's also trying to be a video camera...including recording sound. This probably means that the camera's going to be pretty heavy, compared to others of it's size.
The zoom is ok, but not great...3x optical zoom really isn't much on a digital camera these days/
What does it feel like in your hand? That was actually the deciding factor when I bought my camera...the camera in my price range that falt the best and most natural.
I'm sure it's a fine camera. The price seems good. I'm just not sure that I would choose it or that it has the best combination of features...

the charging dock is probably a great feature too.
and with 6 megapixels the main benefit is that you could take a picture, crop it pretty heavily, and still have nice quality at a fairly decent size. in other words, the old 2-3 megapixel cameras you could print a 5x7 or 8x10 but the quality wouldn't be that great - looking close you could see blockiness on things that have fine detail - like a person's hair or leaves on trees in a scenic shot. the greater number of megapixels in this camera would give you more "information" in your picture so that even blown up/cropped you'd still be able to get great print quality.

depends I think. if $399 is more than you wanted to spend then yeah, you could get a pretty decent camera for cheaper. on the other hand, if this fits in your budget you probably won't find anything better at this price. as far as "more than you need" our camera's a 4.1MP and I think 5 or 6 would really hit the sweet spot in terms of resolution.

hmm, is there a better alternative? I was looking at that battery as a plus, not a minus. our camera takes standard AA batteries, but four of them that have to be removed for charging. they're heavy and a dock that charges the battery right in the camera would be much more convenient.

you won't find digital still cameras nowdays that *don't* do video. it's almost always poor quality but I think manufacturers see it as a feature they've gotta have to be competitive.

yeah, 3x is pretty much the standard. there must be something inherently more difficult/expensive about 4x+ that prevents most manufacturers from offering it in a consumer camera. video cameras on the other hand typically offer 10x and greater optical zoom. weird.

wow Heather, this almost sounds like a "thumbs down". lemme guess, are you anti-digital?

From everyone I have ever talked to , read posts on this site, and from days, weeks, months of looking, reading , researching online, Kodak easyshare cameras are a hit with everyone.
I don't see the negative in the battery either. If I personnally had the money today I would buy this camera! :( unfortunatley I don't so I can't. If it is in your budget I would really give this camera some very serious consideration...Good Luck and Happy Shopping! Let us know if you get it!

that's why it's cheaper on the B&H site - no dock. it's a $70 add-on. so that plus the shipping and the HSN price stacks up pretty well.

For this specific camera it looks like HSN is offering a pretty good deal for today. Like I said, IF I had the $$ I would get it. But it will prob. be at least 2mos. before I can get one, in the meantime I keep looking reviewing and window shopping

For basically the same cost you can go to Sam's Club and get the Kodak Easy Share DX6490 with a free docking station. It has 4 megapixels which is plenty and a 10X optical zoom. When you look around, look for a higher OPTICAL zoom, not digital. This is what we just bought and we're VERY happy with it. Just took some awesome pictures at Niagara Falls yesterday.

My camera takes AAs...2 of them. I have rechargables. I often carry 4 extra which will usually fill a 128 meg card. I think the 6 pack of batteries plus the charger were about $20 and weigh ounces.
Cheap, charges 4 batteries in about 2 hours...and in case I get stuck, almost anyplace carries regular AAs.
I've also heard from quite a few Kodak owners who have had problems with the charging part of their docks. I would imagine that that would be an expensive problem to fix (assuming that it was past the warranty) or you'd be w/out the camera functioning until Kodak fixed it.

I wish they'd stop...if I wanted video, I'd buy a video camera!

No, not anti digital in the least...I just don't think the cheapest/easiest is necessarily the best. There are just so many different options out there it's worth looking at all of them ;)

Camera
If you have not bought the camera yet.....
The Kodak one they have taked about is the one consumer reports recommends. It has that great 10x opitcal Zoom. I was just at Costco today and they have it with a docking station for around 399.00. That is a good deal.
Just my two cents.
A

Kar,
Did you check out www.cnet.com? They have reviews that helped me decide on a camera. I agree with Daven - 6mp would be cool but if you can not afford it a 3 or 4 will do as well. We have a 1.7mp from several years back that takes great pics of things right in front of you and our 3.2mp that I use for everything. My friend has one that is 2mp and I thought the pics were from a film camera. As long as you do not crop them before processing (we upload digital to walmart.com to get prints) they will be fine! The zoom depends on what you will be taking pics of. Ours only has 3x opt. zoom so anytime we go somewhere where I think we will need more than that I always take my SLR which as an awesome zoom lens. I have found that I just dont really need that much at all... maybe when you are at the zoo or something like that. Otherwise most everything you would like to take a picture of is close enough you do not really need zoom. (people!)
Just some more thoughts for you!
Keep us updated!
Shelley
