Default Poll for those who buy stamps in sets!

Curious about how much of the set you typically like.

I use some of the stamps more often than others in a set. Typically, the smaller ones I use for BG. When I buy a set, I spend hours playing with all the stamps to look for possibilities. I like how the SU sets coordinate.

For me it really just depends on the set -- the odd time I have bought a set where I just HAD to have one stamp ... other times I wont.

I buy sets that I like the feel of their looks. May mean I only like one or two stamps in the set, or all of them. However once I get it, I find that I use most of the stamps because I see how they coordinate so well.

I love stamps in sets - SO many more possibilities and combinations without the long searches for stamps that look OK together.

Same reason I only buy SU paper now - too hard to match blues and greens from other companies!

Sometimes it's not the images but the "feel" of the set.

I won't buy a set if I just like 1 image though.

Glad it's not just me!! LOL! I really love the gnome sstamp in the yard decorations SU set, but I don't like the rest of them. I just can't ever see a need for a stamp that says "I like to hang out with people shorter and chubbier than me". So, sad for me, I can't have the gnome.

For those of you who use only partial sets, 2 questions. 1) What do you do with the others? Give them away? Just store? Sell individuals out of set? 2) Do you feel bothered by knowing that you may have spent $30 on a set where you only use 2 stamps making them, in effect, $15 apiece?

That was hard for me to answer, because I have been in all of those scenerios before. Most sets I use all the stamps at some point, but favor certain ones.

I really try to make sure I LOVE one or two images and LIKE almost all the others. If I really only love one, I look to see if I kind find a similar image in a similar style from another manufacturer. One where I can buy singly or one where I like the whole set. I am just now getting brave enough to pass on the unwanted images in my older SU sets. None of these are hot on the resale market and right now I don't have enough time right now to handle selling of stamps.

Smile One nice one will do it for me

If the set has one really great stamp I like, I would consider buying it and have. I needed a stamp that said: Happy Anniversary and for that reason bought the large set All Year Cheer 111. Then after I had it, I found that I actually did use most of the others too.

There are quite a few individual SU stamps sold on ebay. Not sure if they are just trying to get more money out of the set that way, or just getting rid of the ones they don't use - maybe it's a bit of both. I would never split up a set, sacrilege to me. :o

I have sets that I don't use all the images, but I take that into consideration when I buy the set, the number of stamps varies with my passion for the images, so I find it hard to select an option in your poll. Generally, I won't buy a set for just one stamp. One example I can think of immediately was the set in the Holiday mini, Merry Little Chrismas. Had to have that stamp with the cookies on the plate! LOL But, I find that Christmas sets usually do very well when resold on ebay. I like to use different images every year for Christmas cards, so that is one category I'm willing to part with after a time.

Kiraj - I'm with ya' on the gnome. Some of my stamp friends have a running joke about gnomes. In those cases I try to find someone who has the set and will stamp the one image for me. Go to a set gallery and ask some people in a pm, or go to the Swap forum for Image Swaps. There are lots of friendly people willing to share and I do the same for others.

Most of my sets, I love all the images in the set. There are a few that have a stamp or two that I don't love, but still try to use. I just love that someone has done the coordination work for me. All I have to do is open the box & all the stamps match!

I read in the above posts that people mention the "feel" of a set and I would say that is a big factor for me. There are certain styles of stamps I prefer and tend to use most often. However, I usually go for sets that have at least a few images that I just have to have. With my Hostess bennies and freebies I will venture out of my comfort zone a little more with what I purchase.

I have very few non-SU! stamps, probably 95% of my stamps are in sets.

I love the concept of stamps in sets! If I like most or all of a set, then I will buy it if the price is acceptable to me (depends on what else I have on my wishlist at the time). If I like only one or two stamps from a set, the fact that I'm not enthused about the other stamps makes it easier for me to emotionally let go of that set.

That is my thing. I think I like sets for the aesthetics of them. I have a few random images that I like that are just single stamps, but then I can never find a sentiment that is in the same style or a background image that complements it, and that frustrates me. Not that I never combine sets, but I like to use broad line images with broad line images and fine swirls with fine line images, etc. So, I usually buy a set if I like the overall look of the set and find that I appreciate having the coordinating images when it comes right down to making a project.

I'm an SU! demo, so I just keep all the images in the set together, even if there is one that I've never inked, and then if it retires and I want to get rid of it, it is still a complete set.

My sentiments exactly!! I also find that the ones I wasn't too sure about become well used in time! I love the fact that my SU! sets are all well coordinated. I am fussy about fonts matching, as in I would probably not use French Script as a background on a card with the words from Polka Dots & Paisley, just because they have a different feel and "flavour".

At least with SU! sets I can pull a set out of the basket and know I can create pretty much anything I want, and it all works together!

I have had excellent luck , with patience, finding the one or two lone stamps from a set on chatboards and of course, on ebay.

I love how the sets work together. Usually when I am deciding to buy I have to see several ways of combining the stamps to make different cards or I won't buy. I don't think I own one set that has an used stamp in it. This does make SU so great for me...it's all coordinated.

I've never had the heart to even sell a set, never mind split one up. *gasp*

I generally love the feel of a set or the main images, and then I see how other people use the smaller stamps as background or whatever. I don't think of it at all in monetary terms, at that point.

That said, I have a few older sets and have had trouble using them, and a very few that I think, "Why on earth did I buy this?" LOL I keep thinking maybe I'll pass them on to my sister, who never has money for stamps. I do send her a lot of stuff as it is, extra SAB sets, etc.

I'm w/Kathy ... I have actually started to sort my sets *thinking* I would sell some of them. I walk away for a day or two and when I come back I think "WHAT was I thinking - I can't sell these"! I would not consider splitting a set up to sell either.

I like buying stamps in sets... I love the versatility that comes from a set and the ease of use because it all goes together so beautifully. It's also great for new stampers ... makes things a LOT easier for them!

I love the stamps in sets....talk about makin' it easy for ya! I keep all my stamps together, regardless if I don't use one of them. I never sell them separately. Take the baroque motif in the preview catty~ I happen to *LOVE* four of the stamps, and am thinking that 2 will be used, just not as often. Pick a petal- there's 11 in that set. And I plan on inking all eleven up equally!!

On occasion, I buy your A Muse image, or a Stampendous image, or any other stamp I just fall for, (too many to list!!) but they are just so darn expensive that way!
Also, while there are a few sets are $30, there are just as many (and probably more) that are less expensive and I really do pick out which if the high end ones I need, if any!

Ok, I have been known (but only by very close, stamp-addicted friends) to buy a set for love of one stamp.

It's rare, though, really really rare.

Really.

I'm not talented enough to buy single stamps and pull them together for a great look. I need sets to help me with inspiration. I don't spend my bucks, though unless most of the stamps in the set appeal to me. I'm still finding my way to learning my style and comfort level.

I find that as I work with a set, I find more and more uses (which I end up loving) for those stamps I wasn't so sure of at the beginning... So even if I don't love love all the stamps in a set, I may buy it anyway and then come to love them all...

I think this is a big deal to a lot of people.

I don't feel particularly talented in the creative department. I can make stuff but I need to look at things to get a feel for what I want to do. SU! makes it very easy with sets, matching colors, coordinating paper, etc. I find I can do more consistently nice work if I stick to them.

I will buy other tools, paper - I won't buy other colored CS but I'll buy metallic paper or funky textured paper, and I'll buy stuff like alcohol inks etc. that SU! doesn't sell. But for the basics, they sure do make it easy.

And I really think that the more talented you are, the more you won't want to be limited to one company, and I see those ladies really branch out and be able to pull all sorts of stuff together. It's awesome. And I'm sure SU! knows they can't satisfy that kind of stamper completely.

I think there may be a few stamps that I have never used in a couple of the sets I buy. But generally, even if I don't "like" a stamp- I find that it actually does really coordinate well with it's set- The designers at TAC and SU know what they are doing- and I end up using it eventually.

Or I use it when I send out WRAKS, so hey- it's been used
