VSN will begin at 6pm ET on Friday night. And Noon ET on Saturday (see here for other time zones).

If you have general VSN questions - ask them on this thread.

Any challenge specific questions you have should be posted to the challenge chat thread (they will be posted when each challenge is announced and a link will be provided within this thread).

Arrow MAY07VSNB - FRI 7pm - Quilled Flowers

Quilled Flowers

Maiden Hostess: flutterbees13 (Vicki)
Code/Keyword: MAY07VSNB
Time: FRI 7 pm

Flowers indulge all of our senses. This challenge will focus on the touch sense. Let’s make some dimensional quilled flowers (or garden critters).

Instructions

Cut paper into 1/8th inch strips using your paper cutter in various colors. Take strip of paper and roll end around needle. If you moisten the end of the paper, it will roll really easily around the needle. Continue rolling paper around the needle until whole strip is rolled, keeping the edges as even as possible. Remove from needle.

Rolls

* Tight Circle: Roll paper, slip off of needle holding the roll with your fingers to keep it from unwinding and glue the loose end of the paper to the side of the roll.

* Loose Circle: Roll paper, slip off of needle and allow the coil to loosen. Glue the loose end.

* Teardrop: Roll and glue a loose circle. Pinch one side of the circle to a point.

Once you have made your rolls, you can glue them down on your card into flower shapes. Play with the shapes to get different flowers. For Example, glue 6 teardrops around a tight circle. For the stems, take a green strip and fold it in half. Partially roll each end loosely towards the outside.

Because of the 45 minute time limit, you may use your quilled flowers as accents somewhere on your card. The only requirement is that your card have at least 1 quilled flower on it.

You will decide where to place flowers, bushes, trees, and/or grass. Would you like to include a patio, a bench, or a pond? Go ahead! Use any items or techniques you like. Arrow MAY07VSNF - FRI 11pm - The Glue that Binds Us

The Glue that Binds Us

Maiden Hostess: Stargirl (Carla)
Code/Keyword: MAY07VSNF
Time: FRI 11 pm

Autumn, 1621
Dear Diary,
Well, it has been nearly a year since we arrived on the Mayflower. Few of us survived for long after our 3,000 mile journey. Our losses have been great. My Edward has done his best to keep us fed and sheltered, but frankly, were it not for the Wampanoag, those of us who are living still would have perished long since. The Good Lord blesses us, and we will be welcoming a new baby in the spring. I know that it is my duty as a wife and mother to hold my small family together, and I take this job very seriously. I pray that the Lord continues to give me the strength and fortitude to be the glue which holds my family together….

Spring, 2007
OKAY, GIRLS!!!! You know it’s you who holds it all together in your family-it’s what we do! What we also do, maybe when we’re tired of holding everyone else together, is sneak off to our stamp room! There, as my DH likes to say, we cut up pieces of paper and glue them back together!! Your challenge is to use your adhesives to emboss.

Here are some ideas to get you started:
1. Transfer squares. Lay out a design with your adhesive squares and cover with embossing powder. Heat and enjoy.
2. Glue dots. Cover with EP. Heat and enjoy.
3. Mono/Snail types. Good for edges and stripes.
4. Glue sticks. Draw design with glue stick. Cover with EP. Heat and enjoy.

You are not limited to these adhesives. You may use any kind of adhesive you can think of. Enjoy!

What’s the best thing about flowers? All the colors to choose from of course! I have a really hard time deciding… pink, red, yellow, blue? Don't you wish they came in multiple colors with multiple shades? Now they can! We're going to use the baby wipe technique to make our own color combos.

Arrow MAY07VSNJ - SAT 3pm - A Smashing Background

A Smashing Background

Maiden Hostess: pattyb (Patty)
Code/Keyword: MAY07VSNJ
Time: SAT 3 pm

Back before we had red dye #8 and yellow dye #2, what did we use to make color?
Berries, leaves, bark, and FLOWERS! My challenge to you is to make a background using the “Smashed Petals” technique. Your background should not have any traditional stamps or inks on it – save those for your focal image – use the shapes and colors from the flower petals to decorate your background.

Instructions
1. Pluck some flowers out of that bouquet or plant that was on the shopping list.
2. Lay them face down onto your cardstock
3. Cover it with a piece of wax paper
4. Use your hammer and “smash” your petals!

Remember that smaller, single layered blossoms such as pansies, geraniums, or violets work best, however rose petals, mini carnations, bachelor buttons, even dandelions will work too! The trick is to have bright, deep colored flowers and to have fun!

If you don’t get it right the first time, you may start over again, just make sure your final card only takes 45 minutes.

Arrow MAY07VSNK - SAT 4pm - Sharing the Light

Sharing the Light

Maiden Hostess: stagccva (Taylor)
Code/Keyword: MAY07VSNK
Challenge Time: SAT 4 pm

Welcome to Springtime!!! Sunshine, singing birds, and beautiful blooming fragrant flowers everywhere!!! If your yard is like mine, those flowers take center stage. They’re everywhere – along the walkway, around the trees, in vases on the countertops – anywhere I can cram them!

Sometimes in Springtime I get so excited about my flowers I forget about all the other wonderful things that arrive with Springtime, or that have been here all along. So here is my challenge to you: Stamp a sentiment, using any sentiment stamp you have, and make IT the focal point of your card. Use your flowers as eye candy – just a sprinkle here and there for splashes of color, whiffs of fragrance, a little mood lighting. I have no set template, sketch, or colors – just make it springy, and let that sentiment be the crown jewel of the garden!

April Showers bring May Batik

Maiden Hostess: Stampinthyme (Lisa)
Code/Keyword: MAY07VSNL

Hey everybody! Spring is here and it is time to get fresh and funky with a fun technique. I mean who can resist the temptation to play with ink and water. I know I can't! Then we'll add just a touch of heat and we will sizzle our way through spring with Batik Embossing.

Instructions

You need mulberry paper or a coffee filter, Versamark, clear embossing powder, spray bottle, ink colours of your choice, a heat gun, and iron and we are ready to make some colourful backgrounds.

1. Stamp your image or images with Versamark
2. Emboss with clear powder.
3. Spritz with water.
4. Dab on colours.
5. Iron using copy paper to remove embossing.
6. Mount on white card stock and you are ready to go.

There is a great SCS tutorial by Erika Martin:

Arrow MAY07VSNM - SAT 6pm - Pilgrim Gratitude

Pilgrim Gratitude

Maiden Hostess: badger-girl (Jennifer)
Code/Keyword: MAY07VSNM
Time: SAT 6 pm

Here's a riddle for you:

Q: April showers bring May flowers, but what do Mayflowers bring?
A: Pilgrims! (groan)

Well, I don't have any Pilgrim stamps, but Pilgrims make me think of Thanksgiving, and of course Thanksgiving is all about being thankful.

So here is your challenge: Tell someone you are thankful for them. Create a Thank You card that does not say "Thank You". That's right, you cannot use the words "Thank You" or "Thanks" anywhere on your card, but it must be clear that it is a Thank You Card. The rest is up to you.

Arrow MAY07VSNN - SAT 7pm - Not Flowers

Not-Flowers

Maiden Hostess: jpmayo (Jimmi)
Code/Keyword: MAY07VSNN
Time: SAT 7 pm

"When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it, it's your world for the moment. I want to give that world to someone else. Most people in the city rush around so, they have no time to look at a flower. I want them to see it whether they want to or not".
- Georgia O'Keeffe

And I want you to have flowers but not just any flowers - your flowers must be unique and draw the attention of those busy city-dwellers. Your challenge is to create a flower without using flowers. This means you may use stamps, or shape punches, or stickers, or whatever, but nothing that is already a flower (no flower stamps, no primas, no flower punches, etc). Use your imagination!

Arrow MAY07VSNO - SAT 8pm - Pocket Full of Posies

A Pocket Full Of Posies

Maiden Hostess: StampOwl (Frances)
Code/Keyword: MAY07VSNO
Time: SAT 8 pm

On of the best sights about spring is seeing all the pretty flowers all over the place for us to admire. There are times when they are sooo beautiful you wish you could put them in your pockets to take home with you. My challenge to you is to create a card that incorporates some sort of a pocket.

Here are some ideas:
* pocket stamp
* pocket shaped card or hand-cut pocket on the card
* pocket-style construction card (there are many varieties)

Arrow MAY07VSNP - SAT 9pm - Captivating Color

Captivating Colour

Maiden Hostess: Ambouth (Anne-Marie)
Code/Keyword: MAY07VSNP
Time: SAT 9 pm

Flower gardens usually captivate us with a riot of colour, capturing our attention and inviting us to take a closer look. Look closer, and what you’ll find is that what looks like a mass of pink peonies is actually various shades of pink, that those rose-coloured azaleas are composed of various hues of red, or that those blue hydrangeas are made up of tiny periwinkle, amethyst and violet blossoms.

Your challenge is to compose a monochromatic card – using flower images, of course! A monochromatic card uses only one colour (blue, red, green, yellow, orange, etc.) but brings together various coordinating shades of that colour to add depth and interest to your composition – just like a real garden! The layout, embellishments, etc. are completely up to you – as long as everything you use is in shades of the same colour!

Arrow MAY07VSNQ - SAT 10pm - Spring Cleaning

Spring Cleaning

Maiden Hostess: Olika (Gerri)
Code/Keyword: MAY07VSNQ
Time: SAT 10 pm

Spring is such a special time of year especially when the May flowers appear. One way to help our May flowers to flourish is to reduce the amount of garbage that makes its way in to the waste piles. Every wee piece we stop from going there makes a difference no matter how small. We can do this by re-purposing items that we would normally throw away - items we would never think of using on a card. See what things you can find around your home that you could incorporate into a card design. There are already some objects we re-purpose. Using cardboard as chipboard and making pop tabs into buckles are two examples. This challenge is to re-purpose your everday trash, such as:

bread tabs; plastic packaging; netting from wine or onions; bottle caps; used wrapping paper; shelf liner; old calendar pictures or cards; old jewelry bits; foil off of empty medication flat holders...the list is endless once you start thinking about it.

I have included a picture of some of the things mentioned above and some examples of how I re-purposed some of these items. If you are gluing on things like metallic paper, plastic or paper clips, etc you might want to use a strong glue. One that I know works well is Crystal Effects so if you have that or a glue like that your item(s) should stick to your card. Have fun with this. It can be a real eye-opener when you start looking! I am hoping that I will see some different things that I weren't already mentioned.

Arrow MAY07VSNR - SAT 11pm - Turning Over a New (Gold) Leaf

Turning Over a New (Gold) Leaf
Maiden Hostess: peggysue (PeggySue)
Code/Keyword: MAY07VSNR
Challenge Time: SAT 11 pm

This VSN challenge might well be termed “Misadventures in Gold Leaf” because it took me quite a few tries to work out some bugs. (Bugs? Get it? Bugs?) For this challenge, you can use Fashion Flakes, Gold Foil, any type of metallic sheet or a metallic embossing powder to create your images. Because what is a flower maiden without leaves? Nothing but a sad stalk(er) hee hee.

Bottom line: Your card creation has to be metallic in some sense, either the main image, or background.

Instructions for using Fashion Flakes (gold leaf).

* Stamp your image in versamark or craft ink. (Hint: I got the best results using a metallic craft ink, like SU gold, because when the flakes don’t completely adhere, you still have a shiny base underneath.)

* Sprinkle liberally with heat and stick powder, then heat it but not for too long, you want your image sticky, not dried out.

* Using a separate embossing dish than for the heat and stick powder, sprinkle fashion flakes on the embossed image. (Hint: I actually found it worked better if I pressed them in with my fingers.)

* Let it dry. (Hint: I experimented with varying drying times and eventually let my sample dry for five minutes. If you brush off the excess too soon, too many flakes ‘flake’ off. You can always assemble the rest of your card during this time.)

* Find a used toothbrush (dry!) and gently brush off excess flakes.

* Buff the image to help it shine. (Hint: I found that a used dryer sheet worked the best for me.)

If you don’t get it right the first time, you may start over again, just make sure your final card only takes 45 minutes.

Again, you can simply use a leafing pen or metallic embossing powder for your image instead. But for those who wish, that is my little tutorial and pearls of wisdom about Fashion Flakes. Go forth and flake . . .er, show us your interpretation of turning over a new (gold) leaf.
