I've been seeing all kinds of wonderful cards using an oval stamp to make a "ground" for their images to stand on. Like this wonderful card by bnlnkids.
Well, being the "frugal" stamper that I am (DH would be laughing out loud at that one), I decided to try to make my own "ground".
I had a big piece of rubber left over, so I peeled off the top layer of rubber away from the foam backing. Then I removed any residue of the glue with alchohol and slipped my rubber into the SU oval punch. I punched the rubber out then remounted to the foam and cut out. I had a Jenga block so I mounted it onto that.
Location: Buffering.... Buffering...next to Okiechic :)

very cool idea...I had seen a card by mytime where she punched the oval out, and used the negative image, and colored it in...but this is way cool too!
That is so cool! Now, if I only had an oval punch...
So true!!! I just got them from my last workshop (what a treat) and they rock!
I tried cutting my own oval before that but it just didn't work, my lines were too wobbly (...too much Starbucks)!?!
Anyway, I thought I'd add some pics for the visual amoung us (me included). The purple one is from my left over SAB Big Blossom and is the large oval, the red is the small oval.
The foam is not even but it doesn't effect the stamping, remember not to "under cut" the foam so the rubber is over it!
Awesome idea! You could do this with squares and circles too. (Might need a jumbo Jenga set!) Thanks so much for sharing. I favorited you card so I'd remember this. I'm always wanting solid shape stamps, but haven't even gotten a circle set. (I guess I'm "frugal" too, although I'm sure my DH would question that, also!)

Do you happen to have a template of an oval (looks like an oval window)? You could use that in place of a stamp and sponge the ink into the oval window. Kind of a backwards way to approach it, but it is cheap!
Wow! I never would have guessed you could put rubber in those punches. Very cool!
JeanneS has a post on her blog where she made several "wavy" ovals for ground pieces - those of you without the oval punches might want to check that out.

That's what I have done in the past... other either use a Stencil and color it in with my ink spots.. or markers, Pencils.
I would use caution punching rubber with your punch. Someone already posted this idea a little while ago and it ended up ruining her punch.
That's my thinking too. Not sure I would do it with a punch. I would guess that the larger die cutters with the thick dies (don't think I'd try it with a thin die) would probably work though.
I just used scissors on the ones I did.

this is a neat idea, but where are you all getting that big of a scrap of rubber?
French Flair background leaves a good sized chunk. I remember having big pieces from Toile Blossoms too, but it's retired. Oh, also, the background sized alphabet stamps, you can sacrifice the rubber if you don't want to keep the negative image.
Thanks for this great idea. I had to try it before posting. After I punched my oval I put it on a piece of EZ Mount. Now I have to go through all my punches to see if I have anything else that would work. I have the SU daisy punch that should work. Off to play.
Thanks so much for sharing this brilliant idea!!!!! I did it yesterday, and I didn't have a problem! the Big Blossom's rubber is quite thin, so I didn't have a problem doing it! I am so gratefull that you shared this wonderful idea!
I was really loving the look of the "ground" lately too. But I didn't want to mess with making a mask to cover some of my images to stamp the ground over them. Sooooo, I made a template. You know the plastic packages that Cuttlebug embossing folders come in? Or I guess it'd be the same as the plastic clam shell boxes that SU and TAC stamps come in. Anyway, I drew an oval on a piece of paper, laid a piece of the plastic over it and cut the oval out with a utility/xacto knife. So now I stamp my image, then lay the template over it and color in with the Gray Tombow marker (or other light marker). I also made one using watercolor pencils and a dove blender to color the ground and it turned out awesome too.
I did take a black sharpie and write "not trash" on the plastic piece so I didn't accidentally throw it away. Being clear, it's kind of hard to see in the mess on my desk sometimes. ;)
I would think that this woud work for any shape background you wanted (as long as you didn't aim for very precise)--like the cool retro rectangle from amuse or you could make a funky diamond background.
WOW!! I save all my big pieces of rubber, and I had thought about using them in my punch or Sizzix, but they were too thick for the punches. Why didn't I think of putting just the rubber in there?!?!?! Such a simple thing - thanks for sharing this idea! Now I can't wait to get off from work to give it a try!

Brilliant idea!!!
I was just looking at my *little bag-o-rubba* last night (I keep all my left over bits) and thinking that I would make a brick pattern with it.
Now I must do an oval as well.

What a clever and resourceful idea! I've often wondered what I could do with all those left over rubber scraps - some of them so big, that it seemed wasteful to throw them away! But this is a great idea - kudos to you! And that card is just adorable, too! :mrgreen:

Why didn't I think of that hmmmm? You could also use precut fun foam shapes. Don't ya think? I do not have any large excess rubber pieces right now. Thanks a bunch for the idea. That will save me some $$.

Sounds like a plan to me! And if not the precut shapes, take some leftover foam sheet material and hand draw/cut your shape.
Make your own "ground"!
