Stamping on Wood

Can anyone give me any tips on stamping on wood. I want to make some refrigerator magnets with the alphabet on them for my son. I would appreciate any help I could get. Thanks!

Have you tried Staz-on? I've used it on wood, metal, fabric, plastic, etc. It works on pretty much anything! You could also mix drops from your favorite color re-inker bottle with white acrylic paint and stamp using that. Beats buying a bunch of different colors of acrylic paint, lol!

I made Christmas ornaments with my students a few years ago using wood and stamps. We (my husband) sliced the wood thin at an angle and I stamped the image in black stazon and let the kids color them in with colored pencils and markers. They had a blast. You could spay a sealer on them before you let your son at them. Have fun!

Thanks gals for your input. I think I'm going to have to try a few ways to see which I like best. I won't get my wood blocks for a few more weeks (when I go home to visit my parents), but wanted to get any ideas you all had. Has anyone ever stamped on wood with craft ink?

You can also stamp with Versamark and use colored embossing powder. That works really great on wood, and makes it easier to color afterwards.

I paint and stamp on wood, metal etc. and if I've used water-based paints, I seal with a water based varnish or lacquer. If I paint on metal for example and have used a solvent based paint, then I seal with a solvent based varnish which is more durable. These can be brushed from a can or you can get spray cans.
If it is a simple decoration and just hanging on a wall I usually don't seal it at all. I have a couple of terracotta stamped pots in my gallery that I sealed with water based fast drying varnish.
