Default PAYPAL Scam!

I just got this email from pay pal....

It had the paypal logo and everything. WHen you clicked on the link it took you to a page to "re-enter" your cc info. RED FLAG!
.
But, I can see someone not knowing and figuring okay, they need my information. It happened to someone else on another board and boy did she have problems. The person got into her account and did a number!

So please be careful. I forwarded the email letter to [email protected] and they verified that it was a scam. Lots of us (who me?) do online shopping - or even get paid for SU by Paypal. So be weary! You were warned by me. If it looks even a little suspicious, it is a scam! The other thing I did was log in myself (did not use the link) to Paypal, and checked the transactions. There were none...so much for unusual activity!

Hopefully, Paypal will be able to stop these people before they do any more damage to other people's accounts!

(here is the letter)

Dear valued PayPal® member:

PayPal® is committed to maintaining a safe environment for its community of
buyers and sellers. To protect the security of your account, PayPal employs
some of the most advanced security systems in the world and our anti-fraud

Recently, our Account Review Team identified some unusual activity in your
account. In accordance with PayPal's User Agreement and to ensure that your

is a fraud prevention measure meant to ensure that your account is not

In order to secure your account and quickly restore full access, we may
require some specific information from you for the following reason:

We would like to ensure that your account was not accessed by an
unauthorized third party. Because protecting the security of your account
is our primary concern, we have limited access to sensitive PayPal account
features. We understand that this may be an inconvenience but please
understand that this temporary limitation is for your protection.

Case ID Number: PP-040-187-543

We encourage you to log in and restore full access as soon as possible.
Should access to your account remain limited for an extended period of
time, it may result in further limitations on the use of your account.

However, failure to restore your records will result in account suspension.
Please update your records on or before August 20, 2004.

Once you have updated your account records, your PayPal session will not be
interrupted and will continue as normal.

I got an e-mail a few weeks ago asking me for this info. I figured it was a scam and just deleted it.

You're right though...some people are gullable when it comes to this type of thing and unfortunatley they are the ones that get scammed.

That's a great warning Beth. I've received a few of these emails myself.

One thing I have read is to never click on the links in emails. If it something where they need your information (like Paypal or eBay) you should just go to the website by using the bookmark you have stored.

Thanks for the warning!

I tend to get one of these every week. If it is really from paypal then it will address you by NAME! Otherwise it is not from them. I send them all to paypal but it seems that I keep getting them.... Just remember to always go to the website without using the emails.

I use to work at a bank and this is a big deal. My friend who still works there REPLIED to that email and as of right now has been taken everything she had. It was about 2 days after she had replied and her account was empty and they had already made a fake atm card!

DO NOT reply to those email's. Report them to Ebay!

Thanks for the info - I just signed up last month for PayPal, so I'm glad I know this now rather than later.

I think that they got us and at the time I didnt realize that it was a scam  ...since then my account has been frozen...in order to unfreeze it...i had to go thru ungodly procedures...then i was getting even more email about unusual transactions being done on my account from a foreign terminal...I deleted my account this past week and I am still getting the emails... So definately BEWARE!!!!!

Also check out the sending address on the email...it is not paypal's address...I thought that was kinda funny...close but not the right one...

This is serious business girls! I work at a bank, and the number of warnings we get about "Phishing" is unbelievable. These scammers send emails that truely look like the real thing. The best thing to do is NEVER reply to an email unless you know for sure who sent it. A legitimate business would never ever ask for your personal information on line. Another tip - use a credit card that has a very low minimum balance.

Default Safety re: online email scams

Remember:
NEVER click on a link in an email!!!!! unless you know the person sending it to you!!!!

Always open a NEW window and go directly to Paypal.com (or whetever site it is) in the new window you just opened.

That will save you tons of problems in your online life. If in doubt, delete!

This is a very good tip. And, on some of the e-mails, when you click on the link, it takes you to a webpage that can actually download a tracking program into your computer. It can track your passwords, credit cards, where you go on the net, etc. Very scary!

As for credit cards, on the net, I use a credit card that has a special shopping feature: I can create a "new" number that is only good for the length of time I say (no less than 2 months) and it's only good for the amount I specify. Eases my fears some!

Well, that's nice to know. Forewarned is forearmed.

I do not bank via internet for this very reason. Still have to deal with telephone call solicitations, tho.
