Default Noob needing help

Help! I'm a noob to forum world. What is an avatar? Is there a difference between this and the profile picture? I have tried uploading both (using a picture) and I get a message saying it is not a valid picture file? Picture was 70x90 pixels. Is there a forum for dummies manual?

Your avatar appears under your username when you post. Your profile picture is shown on your public profile page, along with your avatar.

dimensions: Your avatar can be no larger than 80x80 px.
file size: 19.5KB
file type: .jpg, .gif, and I'm not sure if TIFF is recognized

dimensions: your profile pic can be no larger than 320x240 (landscape pic not portrait)
file size: 64.0KB
file type: same as avatar

You cannot have animated avatars or profile pictures.

I swear I've seen an animated avatar.

Just pick your avatar picture and open it up in your photo editing program and shrink it up until it fits in the guidelines. Then you can post it here!

I was just thinking the same thing... I KNOW I've seen some animated avatars here. Did they work because they were really small?

Paris 062, To find an avatar (the little picture which will show up near your name) you can search 'free avatar' on a search engine, like Google. When you find one you like, save it to a file on your computer. As was previously mentioned, be sure it is ina jpec or gif file type when saved, not a btmp.

You don't need an avatar for now, some people never add one.

When the no animated avatar rule was put in place, people with animated avatars would still be able to have the ones that they had, but nobody since then can add one. If the people who have one switch to a non animated one, they won't be able to put their animated one back up. does that make sense?

So, the picture under your name (cowboy hat guy) is your avatar? I tried to do this but it wouldn't let me upload the file even when it was the size required.

But Paris... you DO have an avatar!! A cute little kittie!

Mine often says 'not loaded' or something like that after I save it, but then the picture IS there. That's probably what happened.

I'm struggling with the same thing. I've downsized my photo and it still says upload failed. I must be doing something wrong, or else maybe it takes a day or two to show up.

I think it was because the images where too distracting, or it took longer to load the page, but I'm not totally sure on that.

OK. So I've got my chick. What do I do now? I'm pretty computer illiterate. I had an avatar once that someone on this site was kind enough to do for me so I need to be walked through the process.

Hey Joyce. I figured it out! I didn't use any photo editing software but you may need to if the dimensions of your avatar aren't correct. I just clicked on Welcome, Karma in the upper right corner, then edit avatar in the control panel on the left hand side, selected "use custom avatar" then "browse" to find where I had saved it, selected it, and then clicked "save changes". Now if the dimensions hadn't fit, I would have been up a creek. ;o)
Hope this helps.

Hey Karma,
Cute avatar-chick! How did you get the avatar to the right size? Mine exceeded the 80x80 px. I don't know how to change the pixels. Thanks for reminding me where to go to find my control panel to the editing links. I couldn't find that either! Now if I can only figure out how to change the pixels, I can post an avatar, too.

jen, you need to select the right size when you're saving the chickie file....depending on your PC set up - what i did was saved all sizes with one avatar, and found out which one worked by testing each one, I believe there were three options. HTH. ;)

Thanks everyone! Even though the picture exceeded the pixel restrictions, I tried it and it worked! I could be misreading the information, but -- hey -- it worked! Yay!
