Question Question about Prismacolors?

Sorry if this has been asked before but I am requesting some clarification. OK, I understand the Prismacolor and Gamsol/OMS technique, but my question is....Which type of Prismacolors to use? Do I use the regular colored pencils, the watercolor pencils or the Art Stix?

Thanks in advance for your response.

As Joan B said, the regular. The watercolor ones won't work with the Gamsol. The regular ones have a kind of wax in them. The purpose of the Gamsol is to sort of dissolve the waxy substance in the pencils which allows them to be blended.

I have a question to distinguish which pencils as well. Do you purchase the Prismacolor Colored Pencils or the Prismacolor Premier Pencils?

I was just in an art store today and asked this very question. The answer was that the premier ones while spendy are top quality and are softer and much more vibrant in colour. The other benefit was that they had open stock of the premier pencils, so if you run out of a colour you could easily replace it. Basically, you get what you pay for.

I was all set to buy some with my M's coupon, but they were on sale for 25% off, so couldn't use it this time. Rats!!

I have a question to tack onto this thread...how many should one get? 12? 24? 48? TIA!!

al_silver thanks for that info. I do not own any Prismacolors yet, so I'd be interested in seeing how many pencils to start out with as well.

I got the set of 24, but there's not many SU color matches in that set. I just didn't want to spend that much at first. I got mine at HL for 40% off.

I held out until I could use a coupon, and got the set of 48. Then I still had to eat mac-n-cheese that week.;) I think it was worth it because many in the set of 48 match the SU colors.

I ordered mine from Dick Blick and used the color matches that someone posted on here - they match the SU colors. This way I got exactly what I needed to match my colors and didn't have to buy any more than I needed. They were on sale at Dick Blick then for like .87 each.

Another key to using them is the correct paper...not all papers seem to work the same. I use a white cardstock by Georgia Pacific that you can buy at Walmart.

I bought the set of 120 on ebay for about $60 when these were all the rage. :-) That was the recommendation at the time--get the biggest set you can. I don't really use them enough. I hope to get to that more this year. But my Cuttlebug keeps distracting me!

I would get the 120 set if you can afford it. But don't pay full price, look on Ebay or find a sale. With the 120 set you get all the regular colors, plus also a lot of variations in colors, more subtle colors, and just a LOT MORE FUN!!!

Also, I store mine in a set of vintage glasses in a vintage glass rack and it is so much fun to look at all of them!!!! I put all the pinks together, all the blues, etc.

For those that bought on Ebay, were they ok when you received them?

The top of my tin was a bit bent, but the pencils were all fine! I've sharpened probably 75% of them, and they have been in perfect shape.

How do the SU Pure Color Pencils work with Gamsol? I've seen some cards in the SCS gallery that used Gamsol with the SU pencils. I'm also wondering about the Pure Color Pencils in general. I don't hear much about them. Are they worth considering? Pros and Cons?

Boo, boo--I just bought the Prismacolor WATERCOLOR pencils. I was reading comments about the Gamsol technique, and was sent to another link with a video tutorial, and I could have sworn that watercolor pencils were used. Anyway, I purchased them and have been using them with great success. The colors are vibrant, and they blend beautifully. So if anyone accidentally gets them, they seem to work fine.
Does anyone think I should ditch these and get the regular pencils? Would they be even better? They're kind of pricey, so I won't disgard the watercolors, but should I look into getting the regular ones?
Sorry--kind of long-winded tonight. Too much coffee after dinner :-)

Don't ditch the watercolors. :o You can use them with water and an Aquapainter or paint brush. Go to an art store and just get a couple of the thick lead pencils and see how you like them.

I read through several threads regarding the prisma colored pencils this morning and found a comment by someone that there had been a posting regarding a prisma color chart in comparison to SU card stock. Does anyone know who posted or where I can find it? I'd really love to see it. Thanks.

I found the posting. Unfortunately I am seriously computer illiterate and can't lead you right to it. I found it by going to the search in forums and look for prisma color chart. A posting by fionna51 on 3-15-06 should be the second or third one. Gosh I hope this gets you there.
