Default Technique Lovers Challenge #01 - everyone welcome

The very first Technique Lover's Challenge is to use the Kissing Technique!

The kissing technique is very easy and fun to do. Here's how. Ink up a background stamp, such as Filigree, Canvas, Soft Swirls, etc, with a dark color and leave it face up on your worktable. Ink up a solid stamp with a lighter color and then press it onto the inked background stamp (this is the "kiss"). Then stamp onto your cardstock.

Here are two examples...
Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

Please post your creations with the keyword "TLC01" in the title so that we can find them later when searching. Please also post a reply here with a link......I can't wait to see some kissed cards!

If anyone has any suggestions or comments about the kissing technique, please share them too. Thanks for playing along!

I'm new to this...do we just create a card using that technique and then upload it to the site? How long do we have?

On a different note..I've seen a lot of "Sketch" challenges...what is that?

Thanks for "educating" me!!!

Yep, you just create a card using this technique, upload it with the TLC01 in the title somewhere, then come here and "post a reply" to the thread with a link to your card so we can all see it and ooh and ahh over it! You have as long as you like to make and upload your card....it is not a contest or a race. Just a "challenge" to make something different, or to get out the stuff you bought and haven't used for a while.

The sketch challenge is very very cool. AndreaSophie posts a sketch of a card layout, usually based on an actual card in the gallery, and then we make our own cards using the layout but with different stamps and colors, etc. Those cards are uploaded with SC## in the title somewhere. The SC is for Sketch Challenge and the ## are for the week number.

Hope that helps! Please play!

What a cool idea! I've never thought about it that way. Hope I get a chance to do it soon. My grandchildren are coming to spend the night Friday night and all day Saturday while their mom works on a benefit garage sale. Won't get much of my stuff done.

I tried "Kissing" (as a stamp technique) for the first time and got cute results! Thanks for the challenge - I will definately try this technique again!

ok, here is mine:

Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

when you posted the directions, you said to ink up your background stamp with the darker color ink, and your image stamp with the lighter color. Did you mean the opposite? When I tried the dark ink on the background stamp, the lighter ink didn't show up, but when I switched the inks around, it worked great. Just wondering, because I tried it 3 times and it didn't work any of those times.

oh never mind, I just figured it out, I did the thing completely wrong, now I'll have to go and try again. Ok, I'll be back. Disreguard this card, it is done totally wrong.

Kirsten, I thought exactly the same thing you did until I saw the samples! Don't fret, I'm sure your next try will be awesome!

I can't wait to get home from work so I can try this!

Here is a very rushed entry. My 2yo DD was climbing all over me so it's not my best work. I'm not a big fan of elephants but it's the only stamp I have that I thought would work for this.

Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

Hmmm...the marvelous magenta really scanned dark in that. In real life it's much lighter and brighter. This color combo and pattern remind me of some vintage 50's fabric I got from my mom.

Now that I've gotten the hang of 'kissing' ( can't wait to tell DH that!) I'll try a card tonight after the kids go to bed.

CrabbyAbbe, if your card is wrong, you don't wanna be right! LOL it is fabulous!

Maybe the choice of light/dark color depends on the background stamp used....the canvas is fairly "dense" where the soft swirls I did it with in the Butterfly one is more "open". Hmmm.

Anyway, I love it! Thanks for playing along!

I didn't have a card handy, but just finished a Technique Club for my darling niece's group. The technique club was great, by the way. They ordered stuff for every project we did. These were all new stampers, so they loved EVERYTHING.

Here is the Kissing page:

Those are all great cards. I was gonna do this a month or so ago, but realized I don't have any "solid" type stamps. Bummer - gotta order more.

all right, here is my 2nd attempt, done in what i like to call "the right way"

I used real red on the BG stamp, and summer sun on the stamp. So it looks orange, overall I like the effect it made.

Kirsten, Although in your first card you did it "backwards" it was still a great looking card! As is your 2nd attempt. I re-read what I wrote, and I didn't like that it sounded like I implied your first card wasn't good! I hope you didn't take it that way!

There's a wonderful example of this technique on Page 83 of the March 2005 Rubberstamper Magazine by Emily Call. It's called 'A stitch in time', because she has used canvas to kiss a branch of simple leaves (I think it's All the Best) which makes it look just like cross stitch. Might be Close to Cocoa ink, so it looks like hemp or twine thread for the cross stitch. Sorry I can't share the picture - but wanted mention it here. All SU!

Can't waitto play tonight!

This technique will be PERFECT for the swap I am in - I have to use 6 different stamps - so kissing will allow me to USE the stamp bu tnot over crowd the card with images...

OH I am TICKLED Pink!

Well it turns out that the only solid stamp I own is from Simple Shapes! But I had to give this technique a try, so here is the result. I think it's maybe a little too busy, but it was neat to try something new. I guess I have to acquire some new stamps!

Like everyone else said, I had a hard time finding a solid stamp, but finally did. Then after I made the image I didn't know what to do with it. So I don't really like how the card ended up but I now know a new technique.

Here is the card:

I've put together a scrap layout in response to the challenge. In the process, I learned that craft ink IS NOT ideal for this technique. If you try to use exclusively craft in, the inks bleed together and all of the detail of the kissing stamp is lost. I found that you can use craft and then kiss with dye based ink, but that dye on dye seems to work best. So, I used some memories pads I had for this technique and craft ink for the titles...

Here's my submission. It is still pending approval.

Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

Happy stamping and scrapping.

So if I'm processing this right there are a couple of ways to do this.

One way would be to ink up the solid with the light color and then the patterned stamp with the darker ink so that the pattern shows up on the lighter color solid.

A second way would be to ink up the solid and press an UN-inked pattern to the solid to REMOVE ink from the solid stamp.

I'll have to make some time to play with this this weekend
