Home depot rubber sheet and Fiskars texture plates
Hey all - I bought a 5"x5" rubber sheet from Home Depot's plumbing dept. and used it in my Cuttlebug with the Fiskar texture plates with wonderful results. The sheet cost only $1.06 + tax.
This is my sandwich from bottom to top:
-Spacer A
-Fiskars texture plate
-Paper (right side towards texture plate)
-Rubber sheet
-Spacer C
At first it took a lot of superhuman strength to crank it through, but I did it. After a few times, it got easier... I think the cuttlebug flattened it. The rubber sheet did leave a residue on spacer C, but I'm sure it'll come right off.
Thank you so much! I prefer to purchase from stores as opposed to online for things that I have never actually seen in real life. Therefore, I was not excited about having to order the wizard pads online. And better yet this only costs a little over a dollar! Hurray! I believe the pads are $20 for the set? Thank you yummyyummy for sharing your discovery!
I am experimenting with some very thin sheets of packing foam - folding over to make multiple layers - to use with regular brass stencils. I think this foam might have come protecting a set of pots and pans. As I said, it is super thin and flexible - sort of reminds me of flannel fabric. The embossed image is not perfect, but I will keep trying. The Home Depot rubber sheet also sounds like a good idea.

My Mom has the Cuttlebug (I have BigShot), and she tried using a piece of craft felt - something like .20 per sheet - it worked beautifully! I've also found that spritzing a fine mist of water on your paper first (don;t make it wet - just a light mist) helps to give a clearer impression.
One more thing... The felt worked with brass template too! Just play and shim with cardstock if needed (depends on thickness of plate/stencil, paper you're embossing, etc.)

I used fun foam. I also sprayed cardstock with a mist of water to make the impression better
My sandwich was
A plate
fiskars plate
cardstock to be embossed
2 pieces of fun foam pad
chip board pad (med thickness)
C plate
HOORAY! HOORAY! I can now blow the dust off of my fiskars texture plates. I went to Lowes today and bought a little rubber plumbing mat. I just tried it and it works spectacularly! It cost me less than $1. Thank you so much YummyYummy! (Yes, I feel kind of silly calling you that but I don't know your real name.) I think I will have to go make a card now!
I went to Home Depot and the only plumbers gasket thing I could find was a 2 pack of 6x6 and they wanted 5.00. I guess I am not looking at the right thing?:confused:
I have a Big Shot that I bought at a convention in October. I have been using the texture plates non-stop since I bought the machine. However, I did buy the Big Impressions Starter Kit for $19.99 when I got the machine. It includes 3 texture plates (2 designs on each), 1 Sheet Silicone Rubber, and 1 Impressions Pad. The Impressions pad is slightly thicker than the cutting plate so I don't think you would be able to use that alone with a piece of rubber. This is how I run a texture plate through my Big Shot.
1. White Spacer Platform
2. Texture Plate
3. Paper
4. Silicone Rubber
5. Impressions Pad
I really recommend getting the Big Impressions Starter Kit unless you have time to play around with getting the thickness just right. You might be able to add a piece of chip board to a cutting plate to add to the depth of the plate. It might be worth taking the time to experiment if you already have the Fiskar's Texture Plates and can pick up a piece of rubber inexpensively.
OK I got the rubber at Lowe's, my home depot only had a sheet that was 12 x 12 for 5.00 so Lowe's had a inch x 6 inch and I think I got a too thick a piece of rubber. Won't let me do the lever all the way down. so I guess I get a thiner piece, I did see thinner pieces. But what I did learn I can use my sizzix with the converter and a cuttlebug embossing folder and it comes out great!

I got both the 1/8" and 1/16" 6x6 sheets at Lowes. They were $1.38 and
$.99. Haven't had a chance to use them though... Hope to give it/them a try this weekend!
Has anyone tried fun foam for the rubber? Or is it not thick enough?

Bonnie, I tried the fun foam for use with the brass stencils but found it wasnt strong enough to push the paper through the stencil. That's when I went to the rubber gasket idea. the fun foam was just too squishy to make a good impression against the paper and texture plate or stencil.

if like me you live in Australia and have been all over looking for the plumbers rubber just go to Clark Rubber and buy the neoprene strip $5.45 for half a metre and I got 3 mats out of it...works FANTASTIC!!!
Hi. I was wondering what your final sandwich was after using the rubber gasket (and what thickness did you get if you remember). I have a ton of fiskars texture plates that I'd love to use in my Cuttlebug and I'm thrilled to hear someone has figured out how to make it work.
I took a piece of random chipboard that I had around and put two layers of quilting batting on it. I spritz my CS with just a tad of water and then layer everything together and run it through my cuttlebug. Works like a charm!
I purchased plumbers gasket mat 6X6 before buying spellbinders 2 pk set mats. In the plumbers gasket I found using the small size was the only one that worked in my CB without risk of breaking it. I felt the impression was not all that great so I purchased the 2 pk of spellbinders for about 6.00 and it works perfectly. The impression is deep. This is just my experience, all CB are different so what works in mine might not be right for you. With the Plumbers gasket material I used 2 shims of DCWV cardstock and with spellbinders I use 3 pieces of DCWV cardstock as a shim.
I have been a little behind the times, as I have had these plates by fiskars for three years. However, after seeing this post, I got super excited and headed to home depot. No one there really knew what I was talking about at first, but over in the plumbing section, I asked about a "rubber sheet" and he promptly took me to some hanging from a peg... 6x6, $3.99, and it works great.
FYI - it's actually called a Rubber Gasket Sheet....but as long as it works, whatever.
Anyways - just wanted to update incase anyone is interested. I'm so excited to get these dusted off and start using them in CB.

OMG thank you!! I have these plates and could never get the embossing to work, could not figure out what I was doing wrong. So they've sat doing nothing. I can't wait to try this!!!

I think I may have posted in another thread about this. I found a silicone baking sheet/cookie sheet at Canadian Tire for $5. I cut it down to the size of the plates for my cuttlebug. I got two plate sized mats plus two smaller ones and one long one that I can use with the 12" border dies. My cuttlebug is a little loose so I have to use shims with it, but I get very deep impressions with the texture plates. The trick is to moisten your paper. I use a mixture of rubbing alcohol & water and just a very light misting.
I just used me-shell's suggestion and asked the plumbing guy at home depot for Rubber Gasket Sheet. He knew what I wanted and didnt even bat an eye when hubby had to tell him I was using it for crafts. LOL. The guy said we'd be surprised how many plumbing items are not used for plumbing.
