Default A Fresh Flowers "Oh Duh.." moment

So I've owned Fresh Flowers for a couple years, and it was the set that really got me into stamping in the first place. However, all this time, I found little use for the stamp that I thought was two leaves for the bottom of the flower stem. It never really looked right, because the swirlies at the top went over the flower stem. So I'm staring at it the other day, and suddenly realize it's supposed to be a tulip, with the stamens coming out the top. DUH!

I wanted the stamens yellow and the flower pink, and since I don't have markers to color on the stamp (and why bother), I got out my exacto knife, cut out the stamens, and slapped them on the side of the stamp block.

Am I the only one who never got this???

NO, you are not the only that didn't realize this....I have had this set for a year because it came with my kit.

But sorry, me not knowing it either is not any consolation to you because it usually takes someone else pointing out something for me to see it

I don't have this stamp set, but looking at the image--it sure isn't apparent to me that it's a tulip. Would probably have taken me a lot longer than that to figure it out.

I didn't even think it was a tulip! I just thought it was some sort of flower bud--never even considerd what type. I should probably keep my flower book next to my Idea Book from now on!!

it's a tulip? I knew it was a flower, knew those were the stamens (although I've also used it as a butterfly), but it would have been a looong time before I guessed it as a tulip.

I think you're right! I always thought it was suppose to be a stem of some sort with leaves and never liked the way it looked. Can't wait to try it as a flower.

Default tulip

Wow. I thought it was a butterfly with three antenas. (I'm sure there is a better plural word for that!) I always wondered why it had three. LOL! Thanks for staightening me out.

So you cut the rubber right off of the mounted stamp, peeled the backing off at that spot without distrubing the bottom part and got the stamens to restick to the side of your wood?

OMG. I cannot believe this. I am NOT kidding, either!

I have stared and stared at that stamp, trying to figure out WHAT that stamp is supposed to be!!!

Seriously. You know those kinds of things that you always look at, and you go, "Hmmmm. ... " and it sticks in your mind, but you can never figure it out ...?

I have this set, unmounted, sitting on my table. EVERY TIME I pass by it, I look at it, and I wonder, YET AGAIN ... WHAT IS THAT WEIRD-LOOKING STAMP???

You're RIGHT!!! It's a tulip!!! I have been wanting to use this set, because it's so different from my "normal style" -- and I've been ... not wanting to. However ... I can see ideas now. AND, I don't have to use that stamp to make really ugly stems ... which is what I was thinking that stamp had to be, but ... it was bothering me because, boy, that would look weird, I think ... I kept thinking, maybe those curly things are ... smoke? I dunno ...

THANK YOU!

I am not kidding.

A tulip??? I never use that stamp because I couldn't figure it out.

I decided to look through the gallery and it seems most people don't use it or if they do most of them use it as leaves. But I did find one where it's used as a flower. (see the link below)

Oh my gosh. NO, you are not the only one, (obviously from the thread) but I have HATED that stamp from day 1. Love the rest of it but do you know how many times I have used that stamp, blocking or taping off those stupid little curly things coming out of the leaves!!!!!

I still can't really picture the tulip but some other kind of flower, yeah I can see that now. Do you realize that 36,000 (well, maybe not that many) people will see your thread, realize you are right and probably go buy the sucker because they love it now. Or at least can see lots of uses where before they saw leaves with those stupid little curly things sticking out of them.

Kudos to you, dudette. Stampin' Hugs - Linda T

I've used that image for a lot of things, but never a tulip. (Although I did know that's what it's supposed to be, I think it's a kind of ugly tulip!) Here's one of the things I did with it:

I like what you did with it better than what it's intended to be used for! I hate this set! I love the swirl stamp (use that quite often for backgrounds) and I've used the butterfly now and then, but that's it! I never would have thought it was a tulip and still wonder if that is correct. I think it's just a bud of the main type of flower that just hasn't opened yet.

Oh my word, you are so right! I've seen it used as the leafy top to a carrot on Easter cards but never as a tulip. Now you need to go post a card using this stamp as a tulip.

Oh this is so funny, my sister just sent me a card using this set and she used it as a tulip, what I thought were leaves also. And I thought wow that is a different way to use that stamp. :?

No wonder I never use that stamp set much, I just never figured it out.

I still won't  , tulips are one of my favorite flowers and it is looking kind of creepy with that stamp set.

Abstract. ya gotta think abstract! If you flip it over and use one of the two leaves(stamped twice side by side) to make the bodice - ya got a dress!

Ya know, I wondered after I posted whether I was right with the tulip thing, and couldn't think of a single other flower that looked like that. However, I can see the crocus in it now too (although you still have to have an imagination! ).

I've seen all sorts of cute uses for it in the gallery, including that darling reindeer, the carrot tops, etc.

I too think it is kind of ugly no matter what, and have been trying to come up with a cute card using it. The one in the gallery that Sencie linked to is really cute, so I think it may have some possiblilities. I was really looking for a springy flower when I had my "Oh duh" moment, then whole house came down with strep throat, and I have really haven't had the time or inclination. When I come up with something that I'm happy with, I'll post it!

Thanks for all the input!

OH YEAH -- the question about my cutting out the stamens -- I just cut through the stamp down to the wood, then peeled the rubber and backing off. It left sticky stuff on the wood, but *shrug* oh well... There was not enough stick left to put it on the side of the stamp, and I didn't have any rubber cement, so I grabbed a little square photo sticker (for scrapbooking), and that worked fine. It's not perfect, because the stamens are just a hair wider than the side of the block, but it seems to stamp okay. See the picture below -- and remember -- it was one of the first stamp sets I ever trimmed!

Definitely a crocus! Not that it matters. I've always thought, "oh, it's a FLOWER!" Never really thought about it much. Actually, I always thought it was cleverly designed, so that, with a little thinking outside the box, it could be used as either a flower or leaves. I sell a lot of this set, and I've always talked about how versatile it is for different things, flower or leaf for that one, and the stem can also be water, etc. Reindeer and rabbit recently added to my list, as well as the card from the gallery that has the underwater scene with fish and seaweed. One that I came up with, although others may have done this as well, is it makes a great lily for a lilypad, with about four leaves attached directly at the base and spread out around the bottom of it, and then the stem (sideways) becomes the water. What I love about Fresh Fowers is that it has limitless uses!! (Although I gotta admit, I never saw a butterfly in that particular stamp we are discussing!) LOL!

Okay -- how about this!!!???

I don't have the set with the hats for the red hat club, but what if you used that, and then turned the "thing" stamp upside down (without the stamens), and used that as the "chest area!"

What d'ya think!!!!?????

Cindy, love the lilypad!
Linda, you can use crystal effects as a glue for you stamp that doesn't have enough sticky left.

Too bad I sold my set or I would try out some of your suggestions!

Does anyone have a picture of it as a butterfly? Do you turn it on its side and stamp one half of the butterfly and then the other, without the stamens? That's how I picture it -- like this: >< ???

A flower???? Wow. I always just saw it as leaves. Makes sense as a crocus, although I still think it's kinda ugly. Love the lilypad!!!! And Happy Heart's reindeer is one of my all-time favorites. I'd also like to see a pic of the butterfly. Got this set with my kit, but haven't used it much.

Does this link work for a picture of the butterfly? It's the first one I ran across in the gallery, but there are more that I've seen.

Cindy, my DS and I were looking at your cards and we both thought they were great! Can't wait to use these stamps again. They have just sat there since so many other ones have come out. Woo Hoo!

Thanks for the kind words, Katiestamper! Just remember, only the lilypad is mine. I never could have come up with that fish scene on my own. I found it in the gallery a while back, and I always share it with people I sell that set to, but credit definitely goes to TurboKel for that one!
