Default Reinkers for EASTER EGGS??????

I've just had a customer ask me about whether it's safe to use the reinkers to color easter eggs. They aren't toxic, but.....???? I called demonstrator support and they were pretty surprised by the question. Seems they'd never fielded that question before. :? Me neither! Anyway, they did some checking around and said that while they aren't toxic, they can't recommend it because they've never researched it, basically. Pretty funny--I had to chuckle at asking the question. The woman I talked to asked why you'd want to do that, since there are so many egg colors available for cheap. I'm guessing it's because she (customer) already has them and versatility is nice. Hey, I'm always looking for something new to do with my stamp stuff too!

Anyone else run across this question before? Have any experience here? I'm not gonna break out my re-inkers and try it (although I'm feeling tempted!), but it's got me wondering. Imagine all of those eggs in the pretty SU colors..... You could have entire color families of eggs! Hmm.....

Okay this so intrigued me. I had hard boiled eggs in the fridge so . . .

I did:
2/3 cup boiled water
12 drops of Perfect Plum
Should have 1/2 tsp of vinegar but I'm all out.

Vinegar softens the shell surface so color absorbs better. At least that's my understanding.
Actually it absorbed the color so well i wouldn't even bother with the vineagar.

Okay the results:
almost instantly the egg took on color, cool
After 3 minutes it was a "perfect plum" shade matched the color of my CS LOL
My water is high in mineral content I run it through a filter. I do know that the mineral content can effect color absorbtion.

I peeled the egg and it did not absorb through the shell.
I feel IMHO this would be safe to do on Easter Eggs. I ate my egg if I don't post again by tommorrow I got sick. LOL
(my grandparents ran a hatchery so I feel I am very "egg aware"). LOL

Oh the possiblities, the techniques we could transfer to egg art!

Now you guys have got me thinking!

What if we try the shaving cream technique on eggs? I don't know how safe that would be, but those would be some pretty eggs.

I'm sure it's safe to eat because I've heard you can even paint on sugar cookies - not that I've done it.

ooh, and you can stamp your eggs with versamark, and then the stamped image is left white.

we did this last year, and the kids thought it was great!

I love the versamark on eggs idea!!

I am definitely trying this when we dye our eggs this week! But I just bought an egg dye kit last night..... should have saved the $1.60!

I am wondering if the reinker comes off the egg when it gets wet like those egg coloring kits do. Anyone tested this yet? It'd be well worth the money to spend on reinker if it didn't come off leaving the kids clothes and hands stain free.

Default Re_inkers for Easter eggs????

I did this last year for my Easter eggs and am still around to tell about it! I even took a picture of all the eggs in a basket and sent it in to SU. I never received a response. I have to say the colors were so vibrant! I plan on using my re-iners again this year.

Growing up we did not use hardbolied eggs-my mom poked the hole out of the ends starting about a month before Easter and would blow the insides out (lots of scrambled eggs for breakfast!) Anyway, we would wash them out and decorate the shells-we still have some of them from when I was little.

Anyway, I don't do this yet b/c Cam is too little, but I did do it when we were 1st married and have some from our 1st easters together.
Then you don't have any worries about eating it or the dyes.

ps I am going to move this to the general forum b/c I think using re-inkers to dye the eggs is a cool idea!!!!

I wonder if craft reinkers will work as well? I know that you can watercolor with them and they work as well as classic. Anyone have experience with the craft reinkers for this purpose?

I would be leary of using dyes not specifically designated as food safe (even though they're non-toxic) on eggs that were cracked. I'm gonna try it this week.

I love the versamark idea. You could use the versamarker to write or draw, if you didn't want to try stamping on the round surface of the egg.

I have seen my crazy upline LICK her stamp to clean it off at a workshop! She hasn't died yet, so I assume it is OK so color eggs with reinkers.

Not that I recommend licking your stamp s to clean them, there is just something wrong with that!!!

Uh, YUCK is all I have to say to that! I did that once out of desperation (this could be a spin off topic--You know you're a desperate stamper when....). Anyway, I had to wipe my tongue off and take a drink. It was BITTER. Makes me salivate (and not in a good way!) just thinking about it.

Okay the licking is disgusting  . My advice would be to invest in the Stampin Scrub and some mist.

The whole idea of having coordinating Easter eggs with all of our SU colors is just too awesome to imagine. Whoever thought of it deserves a nice SCS slap on the back.

This site is so much fun.

I was planning on doing versamark on the eggs this year....I haven't decorated eggs in years & years, buy Syd is 20 months and I think it would be cute now....can't wait!!! I don't have enough reinkers yet to try coloring with them altogether, I might experiment with the few I have now though!!

So funny this came up! I was plotting in my head to go DTE (direct to egg) with my petal point chalk inks. Now I really can't wait to try!

Well, I started a run off thread--Desperate Stampers:

Forums at Splitcoaststampers

Hopefully there will be stories that are funnier than me licking that stamp to clean it off!

I would guess that the reason you need the vinegar is to "set" the color. I deduced this because in my former life I was a cross-stitcher and after finishing a piece, you soak it in a vinegar/water mixture for a bit to set the color in the cotton floss so it won't bleed. This is necessary because the next step is to wash the piece in a solution of mild soap and water to get the oils out from your hands after hours of stitching. I bet it's the same with dyeing eggs.

Default Here are mine from last year!

Okay...here is a link to my gallery where I have just posted my Easter Eggs from last year. I think they turned out pretty cool....! Can you believe a year has gone by and I *totally* forgot I took these pics until this thread came up? I don't even have these scrapped (and the pics that I didn't post...well, my hair is a new generation of red...) and the date on my Kodak digi-album is 04/13/04 which must have been Easter Eve last year.

jjhesterberg's Gallery at Splitcoaststampers

Now, what I can tell you: the dye does tend to sink to the bottom, which is how we got the *totally* cool swirl effects - I just pulled them out and then put them back in, then dropped more dye into the hot water. It does take *dark* or *vibrant* colors to work. It also takes *BOILED HOT* water - hot tap water doesn't seem to penetrate the shells. You can't get them *at all* wet after they've been colored, though: it's not waterproof ink and it *will* run! We had a rainbow puddle in the sink every time we peeled them, so be sure if you're going to refridgerate them and then hide them: let them come to room temp for an hour or so - then wipe off the moisture or you'll have a mess on your hands!!!

And yes...we ate the eggs...and are still alive and here to talk about it!!

Okay it's after 11:30pm and I'm just fine after eating my egg. I had no problem with the color running or rubbing off, but that was just the one egg. I could see where if they are in the fridge and put in baskets the moisture would build up on the shell and the color could run. Vinegar would probably solve that.
I don't reccommend using real eggs in your easter baskets. That was one thing my grandmother was always careful about. She never let eggs gathered get warm after being chilled. she claimed they aged a week for every 12 hours they sat out. I never tested her theories. One year she made me put eggs from my centerpiece in the fridge. She was so annoyed I was too afraid to tell her I had blown them out til a week later when she brought it up again. Only 4 feet tall but we were all afraid of her. God I miss her.
I'm going to try the different techniques mentioned here I just have a scanner so I don't know how a 3D item will scan so I can share.
I love this site it's always creative!
