Default Dumb question.. how do you pronounce this?

I need some ribbon ASAP for some cards I'm making and plan to hit the craft stores tomorrow.. but I don't want to look like an idiot trying to pronounce this.

grosgrain ribbon

I tend to say gross grain to myself but not sure if that's right.

I have heard people say it 2 ways:
gross (long o sound)
and gross (like grass, but short o sound) I tend to say it the first way

I think it depends on where you are in the US and people's accent.

Default grosgrain

Hi: In the midwest we say growgrain, leaving the "s" silent. I agree, it's probably regional. We are just lazy here

I used to say gross like a nasty smell or something, UNTIL my Upline started cracking up when I said it that way. She said it is pronounced

growgrain

No ss sound. Long O and silent ss. I have no idea if this is right or not, but that is how I say it now.

It's "growgrain" here in NC, too. So I don't think it's just regional to the Midwest. HTH

I stand corrected.....I checked dictionary.com. The "s" is silent and it is like grow-grain. Oops! Now I have to remember to pronounce it correctly.

Main Entry: gros·grain
Pronunciation: 'grO-"grAn
Function: noun
Etymology: French gros grain coarse texture
: a strong close-woven corded fabric usually of silk or rayon and often with cotton filler -- compare GROGRAM

But all my life I've said it with an S in there.

Merriam Webster has a website that I use when I don't know how to pronounce a word. If you type in the word in the box for the dictionary and then click on the audio icon, it will pronounce the word for you. It pronounces it like growgrain, no s sound.

http://www.m-w.com/

Now can anyone tell me how to pronounce the word Coluzzle? Does it sound like puzzle?

I've heard Lisa Bearson on QVC pronounce Coluzzle like puzzle and I remember her specifically referring to the fact that it rhymes with puzzle.

1. Grosgrain = "grow-grain"
2. Coluzzle rhymes with "puzzle"
3. And while we're at it, Bazzill (cardstock) rhymes with "razzle dazzle"

I gave my opinion early on in this thread about grosgrain being pronounced like gross-grain, but then realized the error of my ways.
As far as coluzzle...I would have to vote for COL-OOO-ZZLE. Not like puzzle.

Yes, coluzzle rhymes with puzzle.

I need to know how to pronounce the type of fabric called "mattelasse". Anyone? I couldn't find the audio icon on the above website.

Thanks Carol!

I've been pronouncing it mat-la-zay and wondered if it was correct.

Interesting how we got from grossgrain to coluzzle to mattelasse!

Y'all are so flexible! Thank you!

It's pronounced grow-grain. I think that it tells us this in the Demo Manual- or somewhere in my Demo Supplies....I remember reading it. I am a bit of a geek when it comes to remembering useless (or in this case useFUL)info.

Default It's French

Grosgrain is French which is why the s is not pronounced in gros. Gros means fat, but in this case it refers to the thick texturing of the ribbon fabric. Think about the words bouquet and buffet... over 23% of English words are French!
