SO yesterday I went to Lowes because I just HAD TO HAVE some of those paint chips that everyone has been using right......I saw the wallpaper books and a light came on! I thought "they had to get rid of these from time to time so I wonder what they do with them" SO I asked the gentleman who worked there and he said come over here ~ I followed wondering what he was thinking and he said "here you go" and loaded up my cart with 3 of those HUGE books! I was so excited - they weigh a ton by the way - so when I got home my dd and I sat down and looked at them......
I got some AWESOME paper - Copper, Silver and Gold in one book - awesome textures and colors - the other is more plaids and stripes and the third is mainly florals
SO WHAT DO I DO WITH THEM ALL!!!!
I AM SURE THAT JULIEHHR (and may others) WOULD HAVE SOME AWESOME IDEAS!!
SOMEONE PLEASE HELP ME FIND SOMETHING TO DO WITH ALL THIS PAPER BESIDES MAKING CARDS!
TIA
Shelley

Gosh that was quick! I was thinking I would go to Home Depot today and see what they had too!! Anywhere where they have those wallpaper books should get rid of them from time to time! Mine had dates written on the spine and in the back cover as to when they would discontinue! I am so siked - I am sure that they are not good for scrapbooks but cards and other projects should be fine right!!!!
At least it has filled my desire for some patterened paper and I did not even have to pay for it!!! My DH was not as thrilled as me but little does he know it just saved him some $ for a trip to the scrapbook store!!!!!
Do share if you find other places to get these!!!

Teachers have known about the great treasure to be found in these books. You can go to any hardware or paint store that carries wallpaper. Most are only too happy to give away those out of date books. Enjoy and happy creating!

OH that would be nice to use as center peices the florals would be great! Neat idea!! Hat boxes OHHHHHH - what about those plain photo boxes! Dress up my "area" some!!
maggiemeow
TEACHERS! Gee did not think of that - bet ya'll know where to get all the awesome finds like that! You have to be creative on your budgets!

Gosh what do men know anyway!!!! I was thinking I need more of those books! But of course it would not be so good on the "moving weight limit" we have! We were over this last move by about a 1000 lbs and it is likely these books weigh at least 30 lbs each!!!!!

OH I FEEL LIKE I HIT THE JACKPOT
Well if you are going to make your own envelope..how about lining it with this paper ( make it out of white or cream or whatever to match the card)... my second thought how about wrapping some small gifts or boxes with it?? or line the inside and make stationary if it is not too heavy or bulky...decorate a bulletin board... just a few ideas that popped up...
I have 2 old wallpaper books in the back of the closet in my stamping room. I used them for craft projects for a Sunday schook class that I use to teach. I've been thinking lately that I should pull them out and see what's there that I could use for backgrounds. Now, my curiousity has gotten the best of me and I will pull them out TODAY! thanks for the reminder!
Oh I feel like I hit the jackpot (wallpaper books)
How about using the wallpaper to cover one of those notebooks? That would make it very elegant, don't you think? You could make some awesome journals to give as gifts!
Just signed up to be a demo and am waiting very impatiently for my kit!!
First thing that came to mind was using the papers as mats for picture frames. Also thought about those cute cigar box purses people are making. How about cute gift bags, I'm sure there are plenty of ideas on how to create them.

I used those when I taught school...and my Mom, whose in her 27th year of teaching, has used them for YEARS!
Enjoy!
Just what do all you teachers use these for?? I have been saving my old magazines and giving them to teachers and I know they cut things out of these - OH that is what the report card cover was made out of!!!!! OHHH
So what else do you teachers use them for?

I love my wallpaper books! Did you know that you can go to any wallpaper/paint store, and ask them to save the discontinued books for you? They just throw them out when they are done with them! I have one store calling me so much that I had to ask them to stop!
Wallpaper makes great backgrounds, foregrounds -- just about anything. Cover notebooks with it, make cards with it -- it is a great paper resource that can be stamped on, too. Paint it with acrylics! Try twinkling H20s on it, too.
This has motivated me to pull out my wallpaper books!
Kind of in the same vein, places that do custom draperies also have sample books that they either pitch or give away when outdated. I got some gorgeous silk pears in a sheers book. Used them on cards, too, but they are long gone.
You can use those wallpaper samples to cover cigar boxes, too.
Thank you for your ideas! I called another store and picked up 3 more! I still need to look at those to see what I have! BUT she said to call back at the end of the month and she should have more!
I will have to call a couple places about drapes too! That would be cool to have some sheer material!
I am going to run to the car now and get those out and take a peek!

I, like Sandybeach, have gotten drappery books from J.C. Penny. The thicker material make great padding for the bottom of stamped tile coasters. We have also used it to line the inside of jewerly boxes. (my DH does a woodcrafting project for our boy's school for Mother's Day - 60 kids) Free supplies are a blessing.

Why don't you cover and decorate empty paint cans and give them as Mother's Day, Birthday, and Christmas gifts. Fill with whatever you choose. What a great container. People love getiing them!
I got a sample of wallpaper once that had beautiful urns on them. I matted and framed them and hung them on the wall. They have ended up being some of my favorite pictures.

OH OH OH!! That gave me a GREAT IDEA! There was one book with this very pretty wallpaper border with very nice Palm Trees on it! I loved them but they are just too big for cards ~ we lived in Hawaii for 4 years and I have some pretty flower pictures, a wall hanging quilt and a hat (woven from the palm tree leaves :? or whatever they are called) That would be great to frame and hang next to the hat and leis I have!
Thanks everyone for all the great Ideas ~ keep them coming!!!!!
I went to Sherman Williams yesterday and picked up 3 more books! I guess teachers dont use them around here like other places or they would all be gone! (guess the lotto helps them out???? just a guess)

I am going to make a trip to Penny's today to see what they have ~ hopefully they do not sell them here! That is just not right if you ask me! Guess they have to make the $ any way they can huh!

I got some wallpaper books today at Menards they sold them for $3 so I got a few. I also went to Lowell's and they said they destroy them, they don't sell or give them away. boo hoo! I have a couple other places I'll check out later.
My husband is going to freak, when he sees these books... LOL. He already thinks I'm crazy. Ok, I'll admit it... I AM.
My mind is racing with all the ideas that I'll be creating with the wallpaper sheets... I have so many projects that I want to make but I need to force myself to get off SCS... LOL I love this site!!!!!
Thank you to everyone for your friendship and sharing fantastic ideas!!!
Years ago when my husband made a dollhouse for my daughter, we took the paper and wall-papered the walls in the dollhouse and got scraps of sample rugs and put rugs down on the floors. It came out so good.

Andy - That is a great idea! My daughter said she wanted a doll house just the other day! That may just be a good use for some of my paper!!
Robin~ That is great that you found some!! I actuallywent to Home Depot and they said they send theirs back to the companys that send them I don't understand why they would not want to share them.
I have yet to make it to Penny's but I think I will call them and just ask what they do with the drapery samples.
I also have a hard time getting off the computer and getting to my table to stamp or scrap! When I am off here I have to tend to the house work or the kids or the housework the kids have made!

I have another one for you that no one has mentioned.......sit down so if you get too excited you don't fall over......
Go to your local print & copy center and ask them to save the discontinued wedding album pages for you. I own one such company, and every couple of months I get new pages from the manufacturer and have to pull out the old one from the books. Very often there are pre-made bows, scraps of organdy ribbon, areas of vellum that aren't printed on, etc. My SU downline laughs at me everytime I am ripping bows off these sheets and hording all the scraps!
A few years ago I went to this Wallpaper store and got about 20 VERY cool and beautiful wallpaper books. They had more, but I only looked through and picked my favorites. I love making wallpaper envelopes! The other day I went back to that store and they had about 20 more, but the guy dumped about 11 in my van and I told him that would be enough. I had my toddler with me so I couldn't really look through the books to pick them out. Got home, most of the books were floral and fruits, not my type but I am still THANKFUL for the free books! I can't help but STILL want to find more free books that might have beauitiful unique textured pages such as metallic, muted and rich colors etc. I have two books that are for kids' rooms and they are so cool. I felt like I had a natural high just having them! It is really relaxing for me to make envelopes. So easy to make many in a few minutes. It's also the only craft I can really do while being downstairs, away from my craft room while watching my toddler. I haven't used them as backgrounds for cards yet but I should try! Also those little leftover scraps after making envelopes can be used to punch out with punches and use as a background layer for word stamps. I wish it would be cheap to mail my extra wallpaper books to those who want some! If you live in the Raleigh area, I would be more than happy to give you some of the books!

Oh, I use a template that I bought from AC Moore several years ago. I don't see them in the store anymore. Another thing is you could take apart an envelope (size that you frequently use) and trace it on heavy CS or some kind of cardboard and cut it out, use that as a free template. Works just as well! HTH.

Your DHs would have died when I came home last year with 17 books! I use them as backgrounds. I went through the books, cut the pages out, threw the patterns that were too big for my purpose, and sorted them by basic color.
I have them on a shelf waiting for me. There are some really cool prints and the free part is the best.
When the kids were little, I used the smaller prints for wallpaper in their dollhouses.
In the past I also made big fans out of the bigger prints and adorned the base with flowers and ribbon and it made a quick, cheap decoration for bathrooms.
Some of the books have papers that are really dimensional and create stunning backgrounds.
Just don't tell the card recipient what it is and they will think you're a genius.
