Okay, I can try to explain this...if you need pics, you will have to wait until tomorrow night when DH can use his digital camera....let me know.
1. Tie ribbon in half knot, like normal; no loops yet.
2. Decide which way you want your loops to point.
3. Pull tails of ribbon PERPENDICULAR (90 degrees) to the direction you want your loops to point.
4. Form loop with BOTTOM tail, point loop to left.
5. Bring TOP tail OVER bottom loop, form loop, pull through behind first loop.
6. Tighten everything up.
7. Trim tails.
Perfect bow!

A demo friend taught me a cool way to make a "fake" flat looking bow--most of the cards in my gallery use this method.
1--Using a ribbon punch (looks like a small rectangle or slit), punch two holes where you want the center of the bow to be. I usually make them about 1/2 inch apart or a little less.
2--Cut a piece of ribbon about 1 1/2-2 times as long as you want the width of your bow to be (does that make sense?)
3--starting at the FRONT of your card, pull each end of the ribbon through one of the holes, so that the ends are inside the card.
4--Open the card, and pass the left ribbon back through the right slit to the front, and the right ribbon through the left slit to the front.
5--Turn back to the front of the card, and pull gently on the ends of the ribbon until you get it the way you like it.
6--If you want to trim the ends into a V (for lack of a technical term!) fold the ribbon gently in half and snip at an angle with sharp scissors.
This takes a little practice, and I've found that it works better with more narrow ribbon, but it always looks pretty!
I made the bow using the instructions upthread (with the 4 holes). Looked nice, but the top and bottom holes (where the ribbon ends come through) were visible. I used a 1/8" hole punch and 1/4" ribbon. Should I use a wider ribbon? Or poke the holes with a pin?

Wider ribbon will help hide your holes, haven't figured out a way to make smaller but nice holes yet for the 1/4 inch ribbon..

I tried this too...the bow looks great, but even when I use large ribbon and small holes, the hole is still visible....bummer
I just tie a normal bow like I am tying my shoes, but the trick is to take both of the loops in one hand and take the tails in the other hand. Pull the bows straight up towards the top of the card, at the same time pull the tails down towards the bottom of the card tight. It straightens everything out. Here is a pic (if it works). My scanner flattened it a little though.

I cut one length of ribbon and placed it accross the card and stuck it down on either side. Then I just took a shorter length of ribbon and place the middle of it where I want the bow to be under the ribbon strip and just tie the bow. Looks just like you tied a bow with two pieces of ribbon coming from opposite sides!!
Anyway, you all are probably going "DUH!" to me right now, but I just figured this out and it has helped me a lot!
My cousin taught me a tip: I don't know if I can explain it, but maybe someone can help me...
take your already folded card, and punch one centered hole about an inch in from the fold on the front of the card...
take a length of ribbon approx 3 times the length of the card..
lay it over the front of the card, over the whole..
wrap the ends around the card, to the inside front, and stick them THROUGH the hole so they are coming back through the front..one end should be on each side of the ribbon laying flat on the front.....then you can take the ends and tie them! clear as mud??
I make awesome bows and often demo but we'll see if it translates to written form
practice wth something supersized like a knitted or fleece scarf -the ones that are ribbon shaped of course!
if you have a cub, scout, brownie, or guide at home ask for help! we're gonna tie a square knot and it's a basic mandatory thing for them
put a book down just to have someting to tie around or sit back on the couch and make yourself a garter!
O.K. here goes
Square knot:
cross Left over Right and through
let go of the ends
pick up the ends from the sides that they are laying
cross Right over Left and through
snug up -not too tight!-and LOOK at the knot it should kinda have an infinity sign look to it or figure eight symmetry
now try again
Cool thing- if you grab the two ends on one side of the knot(one loose and one tied -on ) and pull them apart from each other the knot will change! It is now a loopy thing that you can slide along and off the other end
this is the principal behind perfect bowdom.
if this didn't happen you have tied a granny knot -the most undesirable kind of knot- and results in those tall wonky bows that wreak the envelopes you put your cards in
Square Bow:
now try again with loops in the second step and primp the bow when its not tooo tight
It is at this stage that you are able to put both legs down (or not) and flip printed loops and ends around to the pretty side
Then snug "slightly not tightly"- too tight bows are not quite as pretty as when you are able to see the luxury of the fabric on that little center loop
but it all depends on what YOU like for the style of YOUR project
Baby Bow:
I sometimes start with loops, tie only once and snip ends
this gives a quick, baby bow like the ones they put on bras and undies
it uses way less ribbon and is good for when you are running low
apply by actually stitching or with a glue dot ...SO CUTE !
hope this translates... if not get out your 80's scarf styling books it is invariably the first tie and the pictures might be more helpful !
