At my monthly work party tonight we're focusing on using scraps. I consider a scrap to be anything less than 1/6 sheet. Here's my list so far. What else would you add to it?
Borders -- Use decorative scissors or crimper to make them more interesting
Dividing sections of your card or scrapbook page
Layering behind main image
Weave several pieces together for an interesting background
Punch out images
Use very thin pieces as a paper ribbon
Create a collage background
Use bigger pieces for stamped bookmarks or tags
Crimp and use behind a stamped image
Make photo corners
I get laughed at--frequently--because of the scraps I refuse to toss.
But a need for them always seems to arise!
A few ideas:
Use triangles as corner mounts for pictures (or stamped images)
run strips through the crimper and use them to fill a goodie bag or basket
use them to test different paper/ink combinations

Thanks for the compliments. I was actually inspired by the gifts in the Cool Cat set. That got me thinking about boxes, and that card is what happened.
I just ran across another one....not mine, but how cute would this be with any color of scraps?
I punch holes or little flowers or other shapes for shaker cards. You can use practically the tinest pieces and just cut them into tiny strips, add a little glitter, and voila! A great shaker card.
A friend and I were making cards one night, and we were both using our hole punches for brads. I inadvertantly flipped the hole punch reservoir where all the little "holes" go and they fell out on the table. We had been using pretty spring colors so they were really colorful. I used them to make dimensional centers for flowers on one of my cards. Then we emptied all our punches and just had to save all the little holes. How's that for being miserly?
How wonderful all these great ideas, I was sad to get to the bottom of the post.

I don't think this was mentioned but I use scaps to make tags. I have a tag template that has a variety of sizes. So, I can layer and use different colors to make gift tags. And punches are great to use with scraps. I punched tiny candles out of scraps to make birthday cards. It was cute but hard to glue those tiny candles.
I've made "Cardlets" -- CASEd from someone on this site (wish I knew who -- but that was before I knew about saving things to "my favorites"!!). Cardlets are little cards that you could attach to a package in lieu of a regular card -- think of the little coordinating tags that often come attached to the handle of a store bought gift bag. I made some that were 2"x2" I think -- and used the set "A Little Love" to decorate them.
I've haven't tried these yet -- but what about those little glass marble magnets that folks are making? You only need a piece about 1" by 1".
Oh yeah -- and I'm a kindergarten teacher, and my students LOVE LOVE LOVE any little scraps I put in the art center in my classroom! Especially ones where I've been testing out a stamp (ie. Bug Builders or other 2 step stamping), or what's left after I punch out squares, circles, paperpiecing etc. I did a lot of experimenting with the serigraph technique when I got my brayer and ink pads last fall -- came up with some (excuse me) BUTT ugly combinations, but my students STILL loved them! You could always try donating to a local school or daycare if you don't have a direct connection and prefer not to save all the little "schnibbles"!!!
A long strip like we often cut off the length of the card can be cut at random angles, then reglued with spaces to create a fun border (like the new SU punch).
The little strips of color are also really cool mounted, and just peaking out from under a piece of vellum.
I like to sort through them in my box and look at the color combos that come out! Often they are better than the pre-planned combos. I also love it when I reach for a scrap, finger past a piece of scrap that I hadn't planned on using then say, "yea, that would look good". It's true serendipity!
As for the 'mistakes' scraps, I call them card parts. I throw them in a separate bag and sometimes just see what I can make with them.
I also try to remember that there are two sides to every piece of paper, why throw away the image with a shaddow or smear, just flip it over and use the other side or use it for layering where you won't see it anyway. (My pennies like to squeek :lol: ).
