Well I highly doubt Shapes and Shadows and Stipple Celebrations will be retired since this is the first year they have been in the catalog (SC was a previous hostess only set).
Don't know about the rest since they are not my style and I don't know how old they are....
and well sincere salutations is a definate since it will be in the next catalog

I have a feeling that Lovely as a Tree may be retired, as I was seeing talk of it before the sale with other demos. This is the first year also for Summer by the Sea and Something to Celebrate. It's a tough call!!!
Thanks, I had heard that about Lovely as a Tree ( and frankly wasn't that interested in it until I saw it demo'd last Friday). But, I wasn't sure about the others.
I'm thinking about becoming a demo, so I want to spend my dollars wisely. There are other things I think I would need to spend that money on that aren't in the demo kit ( water color pencil, eyelets, ribbon etc).
I will bet Summer by the Sea is the poorer selling of the two "sister sets" and they will retire it and keep the other. I think the Shapes and Shadows was very overpriced to begin with so not sure on that one. Lovely as a Tree has probably passed it's peak. I did not like Stipple Celebrations at all. A couple of these take a whole page in the catty and maybe they want to free up some pages?
I can't imagine them retiring Summer by the Sea. It is it's first year out and is a beautiful set. I have seen so many awesome cards made with it on this site.
I think that the stamp sets that were on sale this past fall will be discontinued. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the ones offered this sping will be here for another year.
I do agree with dot2dot that maybe Summer by the Sea is the poorer of the two sister sets and will get the boot. I also bet that since Lovely as a Tree has been around for a few years that it is also on its way out. I have also wondered about Stipple Celebrations since it was a Hostess gift before. So techinally it has been in the catalog for two years and I bet it is on it's way out.
Of course I know nothing and all this is simply speculation!
Do you mean you have seen sets that have been in the cattie for only one year, that where retired at the end of that year?
Oh, yes. It does happen. I can't remember any really popular sets that did besides For the Love of Chocolate and Retro Alphabet (though that was in 2 of the scrapping catalogs it really was only around for a year). Some of them totally deserve to be retired after a year - like last year's unlamented (for me anyway) Build A Bot.
Shapes and Shadows will NOT retire. Because if they do, well, the glass in all the stampin' up buildings will spontaneously shatter from my screaming, all the way from Texas
So be assured that Shapes and Shadows is here to stay
I spend the first 6 months of the catalog scrambling to buy everything I can. Then in the last six months I worry so much about what is going to retire that I just end up not buying much (well, not much sets, LOTS of accessories.) I just bought Lovely as a Tree at the beginning of January. And there are alot of other sets that I just got. It sends me scrambling to use those sets.
I have all but Summer by the Sea and I just traded one of my retired sets for it. So I hope NONE of them retire.

Do you mean you have seen sets that have been in the cattie for only one year, that where retired at the end of that year?
Absolutely. They like to keep things interesting. I do fairly well with predicting which sets will retire (I'd have made $ if I'd put money on it), but you can never be sure. Often it's not a surprise when some sets last only a year. But nice sets get the axe too: a couple of years ago there was a gorgeous set called Oriental Gardens that you could only get for one year.
Last year some Christmas sets went on a 50% off sale, and I think all were discontinued. Conversely, sets that were featured last year in the Inspiration Sheets all made it into the catalogue. So far that all makes sense. However, in a Stampin' Success magazine last spring the set Tropical Blossoms was featured, but then it was discontinued soon after in the new catalogue.
So they keep us guessing. That way, if you really, truly love a stamp set, you know that you just have to buy it (or risk losing out).
I would be surprised if any of the 50% off sets made the next catalogue. But that's just my opinion.
Ya know I don;t worry about it anymore. I bought all except Something to Celebrate b/c I have aFramed Greetngs which is really similar.
Even if they do, I will sell them. I have been able to sell almost all of my retired sets from last year (even the ones that were on the special) so if it does and I don;t want it, I can sell it. In all honesty I do think that of all teh stamping companies, the SU sets hold their values REALLLLLY well, and I am not worried about losing money on my sets. Just another reason I love SU!

I have both sets and, although both are attractive, I much prefer the images in Summer by the Sea. The young girl and the little boy are beautiful, and the woman sitting on the boat is very evocative. Judging by the many samples on this site and others on the Web, I'd be surprised if it were retired after only a year in the catalog.
As for Lovely as a Tree, it has been around since the beginning, but it's such a versatile set and combines so well with others. People are always coming up with new ideas for using it.

Okay, I thought it would be fun to tally the results. So far the votes for retirement are:
Stipple Celebrations 2
Lovely as a tree 3
Summer by the Sea 2
Something to Celebrate 0
Shapes and Shadows 1
I did not include Sincere Salutations because we know it is not being retired and will be in the 1005 cattie.
My thinking is that most or all the 50% off sets will be retired, except maybe sincere salutations. In the past some sets have only been around for a year like the Oriental Gardens set and Winter Wonderland and some others. I think it is a hard call for StampinUp, I think they look at the popularity and similarites to others in the catalog. They really try to keep the products fresh and cutting edge. But they do seem to discontinue some of my favs though. LIke Lovely as a Tree is one of my all time favs, but it has been around awhile and I have demoed it a lot and all my customers that want it have already purchased it. Just my 2 cents, Ann
