I primarily (ok all the time) use soft subtles and occasionally will though in a darker color for a mat.
I never thought much about it because I like my cards and style but the other day my husband said my cards dont have the color pizazz that some of the other ones he's seen do.
So now I am trying to change to regals or brights but hate my first two attempts for a swap I am hosting. Ish!
What are some tips I can try (other than the color wheel) to get some color added to my cards.
And please send me your color combos that you love.

I just posted a BRIGHT card the other day...one of these days I'm going to figure out how to adda link to my post, but in the meantime, if you check out my gallery, it;s the one called, birght layers that love. I used Real Red, OnlyOrange, and Gable Green... Hope you 'brighten up!'
I know how easy it is to get in a rut. I tend to use the same colors over and over until I'm so sick of them. I'm in a bold brights rut right now!
Some of may favorite combos done with are positively pink, barely banana, ballet blue and gable green. You could also throw in some lovely lilac or lavender lace! I know that still has some subtles in it, but you can't go cold turkey, can you?
Try looking in the gallery at cards you really love. You might find some different combos you like that way. Good luck!
I usually tend to use Soft subtles the most, too. Just like them! I know
what you mean, tho. When I was doing some valentines I did try mixin'
it up a little so I used Pretty in Pink w/Close to Cocoa & Chocolate Chip
and lots of people liked them. They kind of chocolatey. I have started to
dip into Earth Elements & Rich Regals a little more lately. I've heard other
people say to take a look @ some of your clothes for some other color
inspiration but if you tend to wear pastels, that won't help you much. Look
around your house @ the decor in some of the rooms. Maybe that will
help a little.
I'm with you. Except I always use bold brights or earth elements- in fact i ordered my very first pack of soft subtle paper yesterday and I've been a demo for 8 months!!
I agree with the other ladies- you might want to start by case-ing some stuff just to get used to it, or do exactly the same cards you've done with SS in another color pallette. I need to do this myself!

I've been into Not Quite Navy, Old Olive, and Ruby Red lately. I would agree with Heather...try making a card you like with a different set of colors. Then you'll feel a bit more comfortable with it!
I've found color combos there that I never would have thought of on my own that look gorgeous!
Try one of the challenges (sketch challenge, technique challenge, etc.) They have really helped me try something new. And it's great fun to check out everyone's ideas.
It's so easy to get stuck in a rut - you do what makes you comfortable. Why don't you try picking out the colors in Soft Subtles that you normally would but then pick out complimentary colors in the Bold Brights family? For example, instead of using Pretty in Pink try Positively Pink; Orchid Opulence instead of Lavendar Lace, etc.
My new favorite combination is brocade blue with rose romance. I think I saw a card on this website and absolutely fell in love with it! Hope this helps. I also look through the catalog periodically JUST for color combinations--trying to ignore all the stamps that I want.

I too, went through a stage of using soft subtles, now I'm into earth elements more, but try to mix and match. The color chart that someone linked to above really helps with putting colors together that you probably wouldn't think of. Has been a great help!
just wait for the seasons to change. i always seem to be in a rut that corresponds to the current season. since soft subtles seem to scream "SPRING" and "EASTER" maybe your inspiration will change when you start thinking about summer and fourth of july and watermelons, etc?

This site got me out of my rut. I joined a swap (my first) and I had to make cards with earth elements, garden green and really rust. It forced me to work with those colors and had the added effect of pushing me out of soft subtles to other things. Maybe tonight I will get really wild! Ha Ha.
I love using the color combinations on the inspiration sheets. I did a set sampler using a color palet I wasn't too fond of from the inspiration sheet and now it's one of my favorites! I am really loving the Cameo Coral, Gable Green and Positively Pink combo!

I love Brilliant Blue and Yoyo Yellow together. Also love Real Red and black. Close to Cocoa and coral look great together too. It's all about experimenting!

Check out Darttella's gallery...I couldn't CASE anything here if I tried, but I do so *love* to cruise her gallery for color combinations! My "comfort zone" is neutrals...not even RR or EE...just plain old neutrals. But, I work in primarily sepia and B/W photos, so is that any shocker?
Any who, I've been trying to stretch my comfort zone a bit, so I cruise Darttella's gallery - BB are her strong suit. Plus, this gal is *truly* an artist. Here is the link to get there....
Go for something is red, black and white...then evolve into summer sun and red and black.....then brilliant blue, red and summer sun!!! Green galore and brillant blue...take you favorite softs and translate them into their bright cousins......green galore and pink passion!!!!
I agree with MaggieMoo The Color Wheel Coach SU has is wonderful! I thought it would be a waste of money, but I decided to go ahead because I was in a Rich Reagal rut and wow!
I got into a rut with the soft subtles too, I think it must be something most stampers go through. I got out of the rut by adding colors to the soft subtles from other families and eventually kept going until I had many color combinations I liked from various familes.
You might try Lavender Lace with Positively Pink, barely Banana, Brocade Blue.
I love the color combo's from this site. I just noticed it has an option to buy the selection (thats new, I wouldn't see the point in spending that much $, unless you want to of course) but if you look farther down the page it list's groups like "meadows", "with a twist", etc. It shows palets, they are SU colors.
How do I get out of my soft subtles rut?
