Default Hosting my 1st SU Party...what to do?

Update: The party went well. I didn't have to do the door prizes. The demo never mentioned it but she brought 2 herself. Everyone seemed to have a good time and that's all that matters. I appreciate all of your feedback and advice. I would love to be a demo if I had time! That's definitely something I will think about down the road.

Hi guys,
I've never attended an SU party and I'm hosting one very soon. My demo told me we're doing 2 cards and one other project for the hands on workshop. I'm very excited. I had to make invitations though. She said she has the wrong ones and will mail me some but I haven't received them yet and just made my own so I can start giving them out. I'm wondering what you all think of this: I made them look like ticket stubs and when they get to the party they tear their stub off and put it in the hat. At the end, I will draw 2 door prizes. I'm doing 1 stamped candle and 1 of the post-it note holders (made out of the acrylic frame). Is this too over the top? Or, do you think it is nice? Also, what are your suggestions for good refreshments? Any help and advice is greatly appreciated!

Your invitations sound really cute. Are you making these "door prizes" or is your demo? As far as snacks go, is your party week nite or weekend? If the weekend after the demo is done, you could have wine & cheese with crackers. Good luck and may you have a great party!

I'm making the door prizes. The demo hasn't mentioned anything like that. The party is a weekday evening at 6:30pm. I'm a little nervous about it...but excited too!

No need to be nervous - it's fun and the demo does all the work!!
I usually serve apples and dip and one baked item ( have a Whoopie Pie Cake that is to die for!!) and drinks - iced tea and soda.
Relax and have fun!!

Wow, for never having a SU party, you're sure on the right track! I love your idea on the invites & gifts! When I held my party at 6:30pm on a week night, I found that some of my guests were coming right from work or didn't have enough time between work, home & my place to grab something for dinner so I had some subs, chips, veggies/dip,etc.
I don't know if any of your guest plan to bring their little ones, but if they do, it would be a good idea to have a sitter to keep them busy. (I didn't have one & spent most of my party trying to keep a 5 & 7 year old quiet so my demo could do her thing.) I hope you have a wonderful party! Sounds like you will!

I have always heard that chocolate puts people in the buying mood. (Like anyone needs much encouragement to buy stamps!) Besides, who doesn't like chocolate?

Please have something for us Weight Watcher's.....like veggies or something we can munch on to keep our hands off the chocolate.....and diet soda please.

I love your ticket stub idea (though as a stamper I keep all my hand made invites and cards - would hate to have to tear one up)...and your door prizes sound right on track.

Good luck and hope you sell lots and lots so you can get lots and lots.

I LOOOOVE your ticket idea! Please post a picture of it. I also LOOVE the acrylic post it holder you're talking about. If it's the same one I've seen I'm sure whomever gets it will love it. The raffle is a good idea!

Ok...my MIL's demonstrator had everyone play an introduction game at her party. Pretty much just go around and everyone introduces themselves, then says something nice about the hostess while holding a stamp set and finding something that the hostesss and the set had in common (it was an icebreaker and fun way to start things off).

At my party, we had chips, crackers, cheese, sausage, Shrimp curry (thanks to hubby) and some subway sandwiches. Sodas were available as well as some frozen margaritas. After the party I broke out the sweets (cookies, brownies,....ect) as a desert so people could mingle if they wanted to. I had out any card or project samples I had including whatever my demo brought.

There's not usually much the hostess has to do....the demo does the big stuff so just relax and tell us how much fun you had afterwards!

You should mention your door prizes to your demo...she may have other things up her sleeve, and she needs a way to incorporate your ideas into her party outline.

You sound like you're on your way!!! You'll love it! Have fun!!

It sounds like you have everything under contol...keep the food simple as to not take away from you party and potential sales.
I agree that you should tell your demo about what you have done prizewise....she may have something planned as well.
To tell you the truth....I think you should be a demo......you're doing a great job of pulling this together on your own! She would be most fortunate to have you in her downline. Best of luck on the party!

Here is an idea....This might work well if you have a lot of newbies coming...

Make up a sheet that has a listing of good sets for beginners....or sets that go together to make endless types of cards - I am thinking of something like Stipple Celebrations and Sincere Salutations - where with 2 sets (both on sale this month) they could make cards for just about any occassion....then sell them on paper, ink pads, markers, etc... to go along....before to long everyone will be spending at least $50....

I am having a catalog party for a demo friend and one of my co-workers that is new wanted to get some stuff I encouraged her to start with something like Sincere Salutations and either Stipple Celebrations or Shapes and Shadows - needless to say she just handed me her order from with $130 worth of stuff on it...(she bought Stipple Celebrations, tiny Talk, a set of BB stampin spots, a variety pack of BB paper, a set of BB markers, a wheel handle, and wheel and of course black stamp pad and cartridge and I showed her what Versamark does and she bought that as well)

When I had my first party I set up a piece of paper (don't have it on my computer anymore) but listed some nice all around stamp sets like
Mini Mates
A Greeting for All Reasons
Framed Greetings
Little Hellos
Tags and More
Sketch an Event
All Year Cheer

(I.E. match things like Tags and More and Sketch an Event with All Year Cheer and with 2 sets you can do a card for almost any occasion)

and show them how much it would cost for lets say
Sincere Salutations
Stipple Celebrations
set of stampin spots
black stamp pad
pack of variety cardstock
white cardstock

So for under $70 they could make a variety of handmade cards...

with all that you could make at least 72 cards - paying $2 or more in a store for 72 cards would = $144

Plus then you have hooked them they will be back for more......

Heck hook a couple people then become a demo yourself and start a stamp club (get 6 people to agree to spend $25 a month and each take turns beinf a hostess for the 6 months) and meet your minimums...

and no I am not a demo....

Default FIRST su WORKSHOP

Wow, sounds like you are ready for a super party. I am a bit concerned about your demo though. SHE is responsible for sending out or at least getting you the invites and SHE is responsible for the door prizes...basically, you invite and feed the guests...she supplies everything else...some are better than others. I am a demo and I guess I just assumed that my hostesses knew I would be doing the door prizes...(good tip for me to make sure my hostess knows I will do it...that way she can relax and enjoy). I do think the personal touch you are including will be a huge hit. Good luck...sounds like you should demo...you have 1/2 of it done already.

As I was reading, I was thinking "HOSTESS???" That lady should be a demo. Even though it was said, I'll say it again: Hostess? You should be a demo. I can tell you'd make a good one!

Ask for the info on becoming a demo from your demo.

Good luck with your first party! It sounds like it will be a hit.

Brownies are a "must" at every party I host!
I usually have my get-togethers around 5:30 or 6:00, so I tend to put on a pretty substantial spread; deviled eggs, fruit and vegetable trays with dips, cheese, crackers, and sliced pepperoni, chips and salsa, beverages, and, of course, the obligatory brownies.
My friends look forward to the food as much (or more!) as they do the new stamping ideas! My parties usually end up at about $300.00 in sales, so, considering the cost of the food, it's a break even proposition for me. I look at it as more of a social activity than an opportunity to earn free stuff, though.

Hi! It sounds like to me you are on the right track. I can't believe all that you are doing and you are the host. Usually the demo does all of this. But either way it sounds good to me. You should be a demo! It sure is fun! I would also love to see your invite. the ticket stub idea sounds so cute! The recipes sound good also! Would love to see those! Have fun and relax you will have a good show since your excitment shows!!
