TLC81: Don't be so Sooty
Good morning, my friends! It is a rainy and gloomy morning here and as I was going to get out my candles (just in case), I thought Soot Stamping would be a perfect challenge for today! This challenge was also suggested to me in a PM and when I find it  (without my DD bugging me to get off the computer!), I will properly thank her! ETA: It was stampinbird! Thanks so much!
Tutorials at Splitcoaststampers
There is a special section of the gallery for techniques found on the Resources page, so please load your card under Techniques/Soot Stamping, rather than under the main stamp set.
Please put TLC81 in the keyword section when you upload, and then post a link to your card here in this thread.
If you need help uploading or posting a link to this thread, check out this link.

Hmmm, never tried this, and never really wanted to. Uh oh. I may do it anyway and then be pleasantly surprised it is fun? We will see. Thanks for the challenge Beth!

Alas, no glossy cardstock. But I will be watching to see what everyone else comes up with. Have fun.

I am out of acryllic sealer--but I have clear spray paint--we will see if it works--I may just have "shiny soot"
Thanks for the challenge--it is perfect for the crisp fall day we are having here!!

I think I can play today and have wanted to try this technique but don't have any acrylic sealer. Is there something that can be used instead... like hairspray?

Haven't done this in a long time. Fun.
Susan, I'm a thinking I used hairspray to seal as I don't have acrylic sealer either. Try and see ;)

Does this technique apply only to cards or can ATC's be used too?? I LOVE doing this, I'm "playing" either way, but I've got some ATC's ready to load if they can be accepted. Shelly

Here is my card. After I soot stamped and sealed I embossed over the top of the image. Sorry if this is cheating, had the idea for a while and this gave me the excuse to give it a try. Sorry this is a rush job but I wanted to do the challenge fast because I need to clean my house....BAD!!
Gallery at Splitcoaststampers
Don't know what happened to my card. It dissapeared, I will reupload it and try again.
Susan,
hairspray doesn't work it just makes the soot puddle, don't ask how I know.

I think I have done it with hairspray (the really cheap aerosol kind) and it worked okay for me....but I used REALLY light coats.

Beth, I tried this and mine did not work very well, so I will not be attempting this again, as I almost burned up my stamping room...:p Just kidding, but my glossy cs did start to burn on the edges. I tried stamping w/the stipple butterfly thinking that would give a sharp image, but it did not stamp hardly at all. So...enough said, I will be looking at all your great creations.

It's kind of dreary here today too. I have to get my housework done and some projects prepped for tomorrow's stamp club. hmmm, maybe I will demo this technique with a Halloween set...off to the test lab. ;)

I am leaving soon for a mornig bike ride, but was wondering if there is anything you can do if you don't have glossy cardstock. And JoAnne's happens to be near where we are biking, so do they have an equivelant if nothing else will do? I/ve never done this before, and I hate to sit by and watch others have all the fun!

Woohoo, it's been a while since I've done this technique. It's a beautiful, sunny day here in Cleveland. I however have to work! So I will have to do this later as I doubt my boss wants me playing with fire today! LOL

My 10 year old daughter asked if she could make a soot card, too. This is what she came up with. (She really loved making the glossy sooty!)

As Debi said it would, the hairspray puddled the soot.:???: But with the 'theme' of the card I decided to go with it. Next time, though, I'll use several very light coats as Beth suggested.
Here's my card:

Oh, we are all having fun playing with fire! My 9 year old saw her sister making a soot card so she wanted to be part of the fun, too. (I helped her a little bit . . . but she did the technique all by herself, the stamping all by herself and she had the idea to do the three ties on the ribbon.)

WOW, this was so much fun. I've looked at the soot stamping before, just never tried it. I will definitely be trying this again, maybe even today after I pack for vacation. I have a couple of ideas going on, so we'll see. As always, thank you so much for looking.

This really was a new technique for me. At first I wasn't getting any soot at all, but soon realized that you have to get up-close and personal with that flame!
