I am avoiding getting into wheels because of the price of the ink cartridges. When I look at the wheels though I wonder if there is a good way to take them apart and mount them on a block of some kind and use them as a regular stamp? Have any of you tried it and how has it worked?

i've not taken them apart, but i have used markers to just ink a portion of the wheel and use that to stamp.
i've mostly done it with the baby first matching wheel. i don't have the set, so i just use the wheel and it works fine. there's a waterfall card in my gallery that i've done that way.

I haven't yet, but I have one I want to do that with. Spring things. I am planning to mount on foam cushion then on wood blocks.
I have quite a lot of wheels in both sizes and not so many cartriges. I think if you have a basic brown or black one it works for everying. I use my stamp pads to ink my wheels if I'm making cards.

I've cut apart a wheel stamp by Majenta. It wasn't working for me as a wheel so I just started cutting. I attached cling foam to the back and these new stamps work great.

They actually peel apart amazingly easy. I did it to an old wheel just to see how it would work, then just rubber cemented it to a block. Now, I didn't have any foam to mount it to, just the block, but it worked out fine.

Wow Joan. Thanks for showing us this. It looks like you seperated each piece of it in order to end up with seven different stamps. Is that right?

I just ordered the two in the front of the Summer Mini. I plan to cut out one of each type flower... and one leaf from each wheel. Then keep the rest of the 'wheel' for good size b/g stamps!
Best part for me doing this.... I can use ANY and all my ink pads. Don't have to buy a lot of roller inks....
I do need to order some foam backing..... I plan to get it from Cornish Heritage Farms. I've been doing Unmounted stamps for years, so I have plenty of acrylic blocks... and yes, I have one long enough for a WHOLE Wheel UM. :mrgreen:
I'm looking at my wheels totally different now with this thread. I have some I've gotten ages ago that I don't use much or only like portions of. Taking them apart and making individual stamps will work out great for those. Thanks for the idea.
Ooooh! I've purposefully avoided the wheels for six years now (didn't like rolling since even with guides it rarely worked right for me, and the inks add up!) Now, you ladies have shown me a way to use them that is soooo appealing. Enablers, the lot of you!:-D
Do they just peel off the wheel? Is there an obvious seam that you start peeling at? Do you cut through first with an exacto knife?
Yes, there is an obvious seam, which you can pick apart with a craft knife. Then the rubber peels off the wheel quite easily. Most of the ones that I've messed with had more adhesive right near the seam and very little anywhere else.
Oh yes, I just did 7 of 'em! TAC has an acrylic block that is 1"x8" that is perfect for the unmounted wheel strip, too.

i too have taken my wheel apart. i only have two because i rarely used them. i just was rarely happy with the results. i recently did wedding invitations that used a vine border along the edge. i unmounted my roller (which was very easy) and stuck it down on the edge of the glass topped table in my studio with double sided tape. (real high-tech, huh?) i took the card to the stamp, and got a perfect image every time. now, i know this was just a quick fix because i didn't have the supplies i needed to mount it. but i figured if it worked well this crude way, it would work even better mounted properly. now i will use this stamp much more often. i going to take the other one i have apart also.
I don't have the mini catalog here, I have to go pick it up from my friend tonight. I am thinking about ordering bud basics. But what if I just order the wheel and take it apart to have the same flowers more or less. Would that work with this set?
Sure saves $$ on cartridges. Awhile ago I picked up a tool that attached to each end of the wheel and had a handle. You could run that over the ink pad to ink up the wheel. Think Judikins makes it. It was only about $4 or so. Great idea about taking the wheels apart and mounting them.

I am thinking of unmounting my SU wheels and was wondering for those that did already do it, what did you use to mount back to wood, ez cling? I don't have my TAC book in front of me is that something you can purchase through them or M's? You ladies have inspired me because I never use them and they are so bulky. Your help is appreciated.
Oliviasmom...EZ cling is for mounting to acrylic blocks...you need foam that is adhesive on both sides. Many stamp companies online carry this, but I don't have links at the moment. Here's to the rest of you...links for 1/8 inch foam, adhesive both sides...lets give everyone who wants to mount to wood some sources.

I recently unmounted every wheel I own (30+, both regular and jumbo) and put them onto cling foam to use with an acrylic block. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!! It is SUPER easy to unmount them and even easier to use. Impressions of the images are better than when I wheeled them, so I am happy to be able to dust them off and put them to use. If you are considering this, go for it!

For just under $16, I bought, and mounted, the two jumbo wheels on the inside cover of the Summer Mini (I forget their names, and my book is at home), that gave me every flower and leaf in Bud Basics (price for that set, alone, is $16.95) AND I have two 4" b/g stamps.... WITH an extra little flower and two leaves from each wheel (I wanted to cut the b/g stamps as straight as possible, so I cut those little flowers off).
I can't imagine lining them up well on the wheel (like a ''two step stamping'' deal).

I did the same thing -except I didn't even need the rubber cement!! The glue left on the wheel was enough to make it adhere to the acrylic block - it stamped great and was FUN to use! Good bye wheels, hello acrylic blocks!!!
I am so gonna get some of the cling stuff and do this. I have refused to buy any large wheels and only stick to a few small wheels because I didn't want to buy the cartridges. Now I can enjoy the large wheels too! thank you for your assistance everyone!
What is 'cling foam' and where do you get this from? I am SOOOO excited to try this!!
"cling foam" is just one name of a few that people call it. You will also see "ez-mount" and some others used as well. It is the foam backing on stamps, the basic difference is one side is sticky for the rubber to be mounted on and the other side is "clingy" to stick to an acrylic block but not permanetely. You peel the stamp with cling foam off the block, store in CD cases or other storage formats, then slap it back on the acrylic block to use again. I checked out a LOT of places for the cling foam as I was going to need a ton of it for the wheels as well as other stamps and I purchased mine from www.cornishheritagefarms.com. I have no affiliation with this company, but I will tell you that for a first time customer they now have me for life! I also ordered other merchandise and 2 unmounted background stamps, and I am VERY pleased with their products. I was so incredibly impressed with the prices, service and I got my order in 4 days!! I have not purchased any wheels but certainly will consider now. As I dont have any to take apart and measure, can someone please advise what size acrylic block is required for the small wheel and for the jumbo wheel?
small wheels' rubber size is 1" X 7", jumbo are 2" x 7"

Wheels haven't worked very good for me either--I always get edge marks. Now I'm going to buy wheels and mount them. I love the wheel designs but have only bought a couple of them. Now I'm going to buy lots. This is cool!!
