1. You don't have to own every stamp set right away! Invest first in getting a good supply of the cardstocks and inkpads.
2. Don't plan to turn a profit right away...give it a while...put your money back into the business by purchasing the said items above.
3. Network with other demonstrators to borrow/trade for sets rather than buying them.
4. Before you buy a stamp set, think of at least 5 applications first...if you can think of 5 easy projects then you should buy that set.

Be patient...it takes a little while to start any business! But stay enthusiastic and keep sharing with your customers. Give good customer service and they will continue to come back to you. Over time you business will grow.

Make the most of the benefits of being new (the 30% off first workshop order and Stampin' Start). Do this by having a HUGE workshop of your own to get started, inviting everyone you know.

Use the demo forum here on SCS! In fact, this very question has been asked and answered on the demo forum - a great place for business related posts!

one of the good things is, i already have a customer base of about 6-7 faithful girls. My sister who sells right now, is pregnant and getting out, so i am basically going to pick up right where she left off. So I have a good start at least. Thanks for all the advice, I have 23 inks right now, so I have a good start on those, plus 6 more when i sign up, and I have as many markers as i do inks, now I just need to work on getting some more paper.

The one thing I keep telling myself is "Have fun". As far as I'm concerned, if you don't enjoy what you do, you won't do it well, no matter what it is. When this ceases to be fun, I won't do it anymore.

HTH,

Mo

As a customer, I agree that you don't have to own all the sets right away! I appreciated it when my demo started showing me how to get the most out of each set that I own by using different color combinations + the accessories & embellishments in the back of the catalog.

I have been doing this for 4 years. I think this is the best advice. While being a demo will be some work at times, if you aren't enjoying what you are doing, you will not have the success you desire. Always stay in tune with the FUN in stamping.

If you want really great ideas, go to CrabbeAbbe's gallery at scs .

Oh, wait, I guess that one doesn't work for you, Kirstin, does it?

NiceRak had a lot of good advice. I wish I'd take that advice too. I'm a hobby demo, but I have as many or more stamp sets than demos that actually work. If I was smart (no laughing out there) I'd make my wish list and then as I made money (again no laughing) I'd suppliment.

Use this site as a place to get ideas for stamp sets you already have. Don't use this site as a way to decide which stamps to buy. This site is dangerous! I have bought more sets just because I have seen cute cards here and then thought that I needed to get the set too. The dirty dozen are called that for a reason. I believe they are getting kick backs from SU and are plotting to rule the stamping world with this site. They are drawing us in and turning us into their drones so we will do their evil bidding. And I know you're just as addicted as I am--I see your name on all the threads.

OMG! I almost forgot. If you sign up to be a demo, make sure you sign up during the spring into action promo. Your potential upline will have more info (it starts in March). But if you sign up during this promo, you will recieve a free level 3 hostess set, and you'll get it before the rest of us demos have the opportunity to earn it.

If you sign in March, you'll also get the Sincere Salutations set for FREE! Is there anything better than free stamps?

I second that.

My two bits of advice are to make your customers into stampers and get a stamper's 10 club going right away. IF you make your club members into stampers, they'll spend more. I hold monthly stamp camps where we do 4 projects for $5, each with a different theme; February was Sell-A-Bration & March will be chocolate, others have been unique techniques, wheels, beautiful backgrounds, etc. I get my customers excited about stamping and they buy more. I offer a discount on the registration to club members ($2 instead of $5), because I know they're going to spend money anyway, but if I get them to come to camp and see all the fun things they can do, they'll spend more. My club totals have always been over $200 and have been over $300 for the last year. My club members are only committed to spending $15, but the all spend way more than that because they're stampers now, instead of just customers.

There is a difference and it states in our contract that we should demo with SU merchandise ONLY...so I would have to disagree with this advice.
But for personal use, the Sams Club stuff is a great deal!

I do demo with the SU stuff, but with the amount of personal stuff I do, and since I'm a hobby demo, I have to save any way I can. Especially since I make more bombs than anything else.

I have been a demo for just 9 months. Even though I had a group of "faithful" friends, I needed to grow my business....so to that end I made a list of 100 people. I sent them all a flier that said I had started this new business. This was a lot of work, time and $,but it has really paid off. I have filled my stamp camps (time to schedule another day), started 2 stampers 6 groups, and I have been able to keep between 6-8 events on my schedule every month. Make sure that you set a goal: "I will sell $xxx per month" Then make a plan to meet that goal. Good luck. SU! is the greatest. I love being a demo

OK, I don't even know if i know 100 people. We go to church an hour away, and i don't know if i could expect them to drive an hour a couple times a month or not. Do you think it would be ok to pick names out of the phone book or would you think this would be awaste of time. For my open house i will probably run an add in the local pennysaver. By the way, what do you do at your open house?
I am open to any and all suggestions. Thanks
