Default Alternative to gamasol for Prismacolor????

I went to my Michael's yesterday to look for gamasol again. They didn't have anything, so I asked the guy in the frame dept. He said that he learned a trick from a college art professor. Instead of using gamasol, use lighter fluid. He said it's a lot cheaper with the same results.

So, anyone have lighter fluid & the prismacolor pencils & want to try it out?

It might work, but the reason for using Gamsol (or a similar product) is because of its low odor. Lighter fluid has a strong odor that most people don't tolerate well. :(

I learned from another thread about this topic that you can use Houston Art Mona Lisa Artist Odorless Paint Thinner which is 100% mineral spirits. I purchased an 8 oz. container from Michaels. The container is white plastic with Houston Art in red around a pic of Mona Lisa! The remaining print is dark blue.

The key is "odorless" mineral spirits. Otherwise I have heard the noxious fumes are a real problem. I use Sansodor from Winsor & Newton.

Default Here's what I bought at Michael's which works:

Grumbacher Original Formula Pre-tested Odorless Thinner. It is a 2 1/2 fl oz bottle, and works exactly like Gamsol! Cost was relatively cheap - don't remember how much though. If it was expensive, I wouldn't have bought it!

Cool! My dh works for Dollar General & they sell 100% mineral spirits there. I'll have to call & have him see if it's odorless!

Thanks so much guys!!!!

I use Oderless Mineral Spirits that I found in the paint section of my Wal-Mart and it works fine. It does have a slight odor but I just burn a candle in the room while I'm stamping.

Can you soot stamp at the same time? OK, bad joke, but I had a picture of someone's scrap pile going up in flames with the lighter fluid.

Gamsol is a brand name for odorless mineral spirits...any odorless mineral spirits should work

Are these what you are talking about for stumps?

http://www.dickblick.com/zz229/42/pr...asp?ig_id=1284

I'm going to try the shoe polish technique that Fran mentioned. Any one try that.

Okay and once I get my stumps and mineral or shoe polish what do I do?

Shelli... please DO NOT BURN A CANDLE WHILE USING MINERAL SPIRITS!!! They are highly combustible and, although you may not be able to smell them, there are fumes in the room.

I just have this horrible image of you happily coloring away... then BOOM!

This may be a dumb question, but what size stumps are best for beginners?

I used Goo Gone and it works also, but it does have a smell (not too bad though, just work in a well ventilated room). I colored this little frog with it...

Oh, now you're talking, something I have right here.

Any substitute for stumps?

Try an old, dried blender pen.
