Major hi-jack:

Tandra, is that you and SHELLI?

Ok, look up Gamsol in the gallery and you find some awesome samples using Prisma.

Inkalicious-

Prismacolor pencils are the most fabulous colored pencils. They are very soft in texture, super easy to blend, come in a gazillion colors, and are just plain ole fun to use!

At this point, I've just colored with them. But, there is a technique called Magic Colored Pencils, using the pencils, mineral spirits, and blending stumps that gives a wonderfully rich colored image. Princessink does this technique frequently in her coloring, so I'm sure you've seen it here.

HTH,
Valerie

I just take the colors out that I use the most and put them in a cup and put the box away. It will take you forever to choose from 120 colors for the one you need. Also if you go to the prismacolor website you can print out a colorchart for all the pencils. I rub some color next to the name so that when I'm looking for a certain shade I know what to pull out. It's time consuming but I would be lost without it.

I love them...they blend really easily. I tried to get some of the Gamsol today but no one knows what it is here (Canada, although a small town). I am just about to search on the internet and see if I can see if Gamsol is just a brand name...I just saw it described as mineral spirits...so will be on the search. Have fun with all those colors!

I wasn't able to access the one on the prismacolor website, however, I did find this color chart on another site:

http://www.dayton.net/~marcos/prismacolorcolors.htm

Hopefully, it is the same as the one that has been available from Prismacolor.

Did your box come like mine with some colors already sharpened and some not?

Before they came I went to Michael's and bought the odorless mineral spirits (hope I got the right stuff) and the blending stumps (saying that makes me laugh for some reason - stumps - hehehe), but I didn't realize that I would need a sharpener!! DRAT!

Jami,

Be sure to get a good all metal sharpener, not a cheapy one because it will chew them up...........I guess I was lucky, the tin I bought came with a sharpener.

And the odorless paint thinner (which on the back says 100% mineral spirits) that I found at Michael's is the Mona Lisa brand. It's in the artist paint section.

KATHY!!!

That is toooo funny!!! I'm in the same boat!!! Brown always put my SU packages in the garage and then I have to quickly scurry them up to my craft room - unpack it, and then flatten out the box! DH always does the recyling so I want to make sure he never has to recyle those boxes - it would be like a needle in his side!!! :(

Are these colored pencils only available on the internet? Or what stores did you buy them? Thanks for any help with this. They sound like a "must have".

Here's the link to a thread on TwoPeas. The gal who wrote this tutorial is Michele, owner of Purple Onion Designs (cool unmounted stamps). She has helped SO many people do the Magic Colored Pencil Technique. If you scroll down the bottom of her post, you will find a list of other brand names these elusize mineral spirts you can get.

If you click on each link in this post, you'll see a picture. The first picture shows some items she uses - one is a "bingo marker", a little plastic container with a dauber on the top. She puts her mineral spirits in there. Has anyone seen these containers??

Enjoy, and let me know if you know where I can get one of these bottles!

I bought odorless Turpenoid at Hobby Lobby...works great. I had a hard time finding odorless mineral spirits too and the Turpenoid has the same main ingredient as mineral spirits.

No, they are available on the net and at Michaels and other brick and morter craft stores. Everyone just got a really great completely unbelievable deal on them via Viking so they are all bragging.

Hi Everyone!
Although I haven't sharpened my new pencils yet, I did come up with the attached color chart (with space to scribble the color). If you want to print it, make sure your margins are all set to 0.5".
Enjoy,
Barb

Were the ones you got the double ended ones? Even the smallest Mike's usually carries these near the pastels. I think $2 for 6 stumps is a good price.

Wow gals--
thanks for the great color charts and tips on techniques.

I read on another post that you should FREEZE your pencils before you sharpen them.

HMMMMM...
Wonder how long it takes to freeze a Prismacolor!

Kymber -

I was talking about the bingo daubers not the stumps. You can empty out the bingo dauber dye and put the mineral spirits in it to daub onto you stumps for blending instead of having an open container.

I did get my stumps at Micheals and they were cheap. I stocked up!

JoAnn's also carries the Mona Lisa brand of odorless mineral spirits, and they carry the stumps. I got a pack of assorted sizes for under $2 (I think there were 6 in the pack). But last week I was at Dick Blick, and they sell them for under $2 a dozen, bundled with a rubber band.

I never thought about using a bingo dauber - what a great idea! I've been using a flat, rectangle-shaped Tupperware-type plastic container with a tight-fitting lid, then put one of those fuzzy paint pads in the bottom (the kind that many of us used as stamp-cleaning pads before SU came out with theirs) and just poured enough of the mineral spirits in to moisten it. So far it's working great, although now I'm going to go look for the bingo dauber so I can have my Tupperware back.

FYI, everyone -- I just found the Mona Lisa brand of odorless mineral spirits by Houston Arts AND the Prismacolor pencils at Mike's. They had 12 ct, 24 ct & individual pencils for $1.29! I liked choosing my own colors that I thought I'd use most.

Does anyone know if the mineral spirits/magic colored pencil technique will work with SU Pure Color and/or the Metallic Pencils? I don't have SU's or I would try them.

Thanks in advance!

I would like to know the answer to this too. As a demo, if SU doesn't sell it, I don't often buy it. Please share.

I believe I read that it does work with the Pure Color ones..not sure about the metalic ones though...I would call SU on Monday and ask if they are oil based...I think that is what you are looking for in the leads....

I just got my prisma pencils from Viking and none of mine were sharpened. Why should you freeze them before you sharpen them?

Thanks!

I wondered about that! Hmmmm...I could call Viking or just consider myself lucky that I don't have to sharpen them all. I think I will inpect the box further for condition of all the pencils. But you know the box was wrapped in sealed plastic. :?

They shouldn't be sharpened. I think you got a used package that somebody returned!!
I wondered about that! Hmmmm...I could call Viking or just consider myself lucky that I don't have to sharpen them all. I think I will inpect the box further for condition of all the pencils. But you know the box was wrapped in sealed plastic. :?
Wow, very strange!! Of course, they can re-wrap stuff.
Personally, I wouldn't worry about it unless they were sharpened down a bunch & would reduce their lifespan.
