Default SU!'s going international!

This was a post on the demo section of the website:

"The Stampin’ Up! Principle of Growth states:

We are dedicated to healthy and responsible growth. We measure our growth and performance subjectively by focusing on principles and objectively by focusing on numbers. We seek to expand our influence in the craft, hobby, and decorating markets as we provide affordable, high-quality products that stimulate creativity and enjoyment.

In keeping with this principle, we are pleased to announce the creation of an International Division, whose goals are to help Stampin’ Up! expand into other countries.

We are excited about this opportunity to expand the Stampin’ Up! family! Our next goal is to enter Quebec, as we stated two years ago. Although we are not ready to announce our entry date, be assured that we are well into the process of meeting Quebec’s requirements. We will give ample notice of our Quebec launch. We look forward to sharing the fun and opportunity of Stampin’ Up! in Quebec and other countries around the world!

While we are devoting the necessary resources and people to begin this path, Stampin’ Up! will proceed with deliberation and careful planning. We have much to offer in other countries, but always our progress will be founded on the lessons we learn and the successes we achieve in the United States and Canada. There are still huge opportunities to reach out here at home, and we will continue to pursue our expanding US and Canadian markets with vigor. "

So, maybe that's why Sincere Salutations had multiple languages on the lable!

I'm falling on the floor laughing... Quebec is not a "country" -- although they would like to be! lol Quebec is a province of Canada. SU already sells in Canada. What are they thinking???

I was laughing at the same thing with my husband... Oh well. I can appreciate that they are trying anyway.... And maybe it's a start for all of our deprived friends in places like England! :-)

Perhaps, because french is the dominant language used in Quebec, all the SU supplies, will be printed in french & they equated that to mean 'international'?

(Heck, some states in the US you almost need a passport to enter ha..)

I was thinking the same thing - they already sell in Canada. But apparently not in Quebec! Eh? (LOL, couldn't resist that)

Yeah, I just pulled out my "On Stage" demo mag, you know how in the back they have demos in each state and province? There are none in Quebec!

My exact same thoughts, gals! My mouth was kind of hanging half open, me thinking, "ohhhh kaaay? Last I checked, Quebec was part of Canada?" Perhaps since it is mostly French speaking, they mean the drive will aim at language support? :?

Quebec has special language laws that require everything to be in French first, then English, and anything on the front (think catalog) has to be 1/3 larger in font size for the french. They also have other wierd laws governing home based business and the giving away of 'free' merchandise (lots of lottery type draws and stuff are prohibited in Quebec).

As far as the laws are concerned, they might as well be a different country.

I don't think they meant to imply that Quebec is a country. I think they are just saying that Q will be the next place to get SU, then they'll go to other countries. The person who posted said SU is going international...of course they already have.

I agree that the wording could've been better with something like..."We will continue our expansion in Canada by(focusing onQuebec.")

So if they are offering SU all over do you think they will change their policy and let us have sales/recruits in other countries? What about military wives who move to Japan or Germany - can they sell/recruit while there or do thier careers falter? What happens when they move? I wonder if these are some of the details they are working on. I have a demo friend who lives near me in NC but has tons of family and friends in Canada but she couldn't recruit any of them, or even sell to any of them! Stinks! I'm excited SU is growing, but gosh darn it, we just got our system working right!

Yes, it is a part of this wonderful country, Canada. They have different rules and taxes. Lotteries and contests are exempt in Quebec, so if the rest of the country is sending in cereal box flaps for something. It will not be valid in Quebec.

So SU is in Canada but not Quebec yet as they will have a mountain of rules.

But the wording did make me laugh!

Jerry and Shelli announced it at leadership as well. They said Quebec is the next place they are able to sell....but that they will go to a lot of countries next over the next few years. They are dedicated to this as the next step of growth. I am very excited about this.

ChiChi asked and Shelli said it will take longer for non-english speaking countries than the ones that have English as their mother language.

Should we guess? Australia and England next? Wouldn't that be super cool?

My mother was from Ontario and as far as Quebec is concerned, they think they are too good to be part of Canada and want to be recognized as their own country. HAHA They actually fought to be seperated and LOST, but in their minds, they are their own country. Good Luck SU!

Hey, it doesn't get more democratic than a referendum. Let the people get what the people want - whatever it is. After all, some guys around here had a tea party and dumped a king a while ago;-)

I just hope we're not going to be deprived of the savvy French sayings SU will pony up for the sophisticated Quebecoise.

"Quebec and other countries around the world"

This is so funny. My son and I are laughing madly. It has made my
morning.

I am very happy for SU that they are expanding though. I hope that some of the French language stamps will be available in the rest of Canada as well. There are many French speaking Canadians in Northern Ontario and New Brunswick as well. My 10yo ds is in a French Immersion program at school. I think this is wonderful.

I've got everything crossed that this isnt a tease.
I'm in Singapore & although Australia does have some supplies sent here, it surely isnt enough & is way over the top expensive.
Also Along the lines of the Military wives, I am a govt employee wife & would love the chance to be a demo overseas, and make some Money and get to share in all the goodies of stampin full fledged. I found a hobby I finally love and want to share it with all.
Come to Singapore Stampin Up!

Yup, you guys were right: SU is selling everywhere in Canada BUT in Québec. Aside from the fact that we have a lot of laws about French and contests (and it sucks, not being able to take part in contests), in order to have demos in Québec, SU will have to provide French services, which include all of their corporate litterature, their catalogue, their phone services, etc. It takes a lot of time for a company to be officially bilingual and since SU thrives on quality, I know they'll want to get it right. They already have bilingual instructions on their product, but I gotta say I spotted a mistake on every single line of the French in the Stampin' Mist instructions...

I'm definitely looking forward to them officially selling in Quebec. And maybe be one of their first demo...

If you spotted mistakes in the French, did you tell them? I'm sure that the faster they get everything fixed, the sooner you'll have SU around! :-)

I've e-mailed them in the past when I heard they were thinking of heading to Québec. I enclosed my resume as well (I have a BA in translation, English to French ) and they answered pretty promptling, saying they would keep my reference but that SU already had translators working for them. Makes me wonder how come their instructions contain mistakes, if they have translators working for them. The mistakes looked like they came from mechanical translation (which you can never trust).
I guess I should e-mail them again with the mistakes. I just don't like e-mailing for negative stuff...

Yes, but they'll never get better if you don't let them know...

I'd send them an email that has a)the mistakes, and b) how the mistakes could be made better. That way you have something positive too... :-)

Good luck!

After reading your initial post, I decided to e-mail SU about the mistakes and how they could correct them. My demo had also advised that I contact them to let them know we're ready and eager to have SU in Québec! I can't wait to have some French sentiments in my stamp collection. Personally, I don't mind stamping in English, but not everyone among my family and friends is bilingual enough to get puns like "Just a toucan of my love" or "You're purrfect"... SU's translators have their work cut off for them with those!

I can't say for sure how SU will handle this situation. I do, however, know how The Pampered Chef handles it. I was pretty active selling PC when they went international. Even though there are military wives in the other countries, they were not allowed to sell to the people of that country. Militray wives (spouses as men sell too!) could only sell to Americans. It is still much like the SU policy of recruits/sales between the US and Canada. My DH hasn't been stationed in Germany since I started direct sales, so I'm not sure if their careers faltered or not. I do think I have met PC consultants that had been in Germany and never heard any bad things. Just as the Americans are not allowed to sell to the nationals of the country, the nationals are not to sell to the Americans.

HTH And SU can have different policies, of course. But my guess it will be much the same as international regulations play a factor in it, too.

Demonstrators who are US military personnel or their legal dependents attached to or stationed at a US military base in a foreign country may conduct a Stampin Up! demonstratorship and sell catalog merchandise to US military personnel and their legal dependents on military bases and in military housing areas in foreign countries, so long as they comply with the military regulations and rules of their bases governing such activity and are in compliance with the laws of the host country. All activities must be in accordance with Stampin Up!s Foreign Activity Memoranda, namely the most current edition of the International and Military Activities policy described below and any other updates or revisions released by Stampin Up!

Some military bases allow sales and/or recruiting activities such as Stampin Up!s, while others do not allow it. United States demonstrators living on US military bases outside the US (with Army/Air Force Post Office [APO] or Fleet Post Office [FPO] addresses) will be assigned to one of the following military status levels while they are away:
This is from a form I got while I was in my debating stages of signing up. We have orders to Yokosuka, Japan and I didn't want to sign up for something I couldn't do over there. There is more to the document from SU!, if anyone wants a copy you can PM me about it.

Those of us who are military or "related to the military" and living in foreign countries can recruit and sell, but only to other military members/family, or those with SOFA (Status of Forces Agreement) status. As for our careers, yes, there are some that are flourishing!! I personally had no recruits before I came here and currently have a first downline of 6 (2 have dropped) and a total of 11.

As for recruiting actual citizens of other countries - I doubt it will happen. Remember that SU! is different from SU! Canada - If I'm not mistaken, I think they are set up as two completely different companies. It will most likely be different for each country.

CM doesn't allow their American demonstrators to carry their demonstratorship here. They have to drop there and become new demos here - under CM Japan. The one nice thing for them is they can sell to and recruit whomever they want - but when they leave here, they will lose their business - completely. They won't have their downline, sales, or anything anymore. At least we SU! demos will still have a business to take home with us....

If you have any questions about APO/FPO sales/rules, etc., feel free to PM me.
