I've had requests for a thread on Junk Journals - and journals in general.
We'll be talking about the junk journals we are working on, techniques used in various journals.
As a design team member for Dear Julie Julie Junk Journal Every Day on YouTube and her Scrap All About it with Dearjuliejulie on Facebook, we will talk about a lot of variations.
My next post will be about what will constitute Junk Journal as far as this thread is considered.
I encourage you to jump in on the discussions, ask questions and share pics of what you're working on. If there is something you would like to know how to do, I'm happy to direct you to a video tutorial of mine or someone else's.
Let's play nice, value other's opinions and.... have some fun with our JUNK!

Reason: adding consideration line
There are as many descriptions and ideas as there are artists.
For me - a Junk Journal does NOT have to be made strictly from junk aka the recycle bin.
One person's junk is another person's treasure.
A company may pitch loads of old ledger papers to the scrap bin. They tossed it... IMO that means it's junk in my book.
Someone tosses old stationary, greeting cards, envelopes, etc into the Thrift Store bag, they pitched it. I'll rescue the items and put them to use.
Items in my stash that I've not used? Scrapbook papers, pieces of ribbon, bundles of fibers... to me they all belong in a 'junk journal'. Why? Because if I don't use them, they're going to become someone else's junk. LOL Why should I give them the privilege.
There are also, Art Journals, Altered Journals, Mixed Media Journals.... and all of the techniques in these journals can be applied to Junk Journals.
My key goal is to JUST HAVE FUN playing with my toys, rescuing things that might otherwise wind up in the trash and create beautiful books.

Kelly! How wonderful that you are stating a thread for my new interest! LOL
I think I love junk journaling to use all my favorite items that I can’t bring myself to throw away!
So, my question is where do we upload our Junk Journals?
I found First drop down box, anything But a Card, then Second drop down, books, then handmade journals. But there were no junk journals in there. Will we have a keyword for our junk journals?
I look forward to some great exchanging of ideas and guidance.
Thanks for starting this thread Kelly. I’m still watching DesrJulieJulie videos..phew there’s a lot lol. Look forward to following this thread. Happy day

We won't know until she gives us the details in tomorrow's video what the challenge entails. I can tell you that every month is different with fun challenges along the way.
The best way to see her videos as they are live or set as Premieres (meaning Julie is in the chat with us!), is to log into your YouTube account every day at 10:30 a.m. PST (12:30 CST/ 1:30 CST)
As a moderator I try to get in the room at least 15 minutes early.
I look forward to seeing what's in store for us in October!

October 1st begins my absolute favorite month on the calendar!
I've been decorating for several days. The laundry room is nearly ready as is my sewing corner.
I'm taking part in a Dollarween Tree challenge with a few friends on YouTube. I'll share pics of that over in the Piture This thread when it' sready as well on YouTube and on my blog.
Last year, I did my October Daily book as part of Julie's October journal challenge. I never finished the journal. I was down to putting pictures in when I ran into printer/ walgreen photo lab issues. I hope to finish that up this month.
In the mean time, a couple days a week this month I'll be sharing pics of my elements from that book.
I need to take pics so my first one will be up tomorrow.
Do you do October Daily albums?

I don’t Kelly. I am not even sure what they are. I have a rough time keeping up with what I do already, then adding this junk journal! LOL. I can’t wait to see what the challenge is . I hope it is something I will want to do.
I still haven’t got around to starting one. Too many other projects on the go.

Part of my post was lost! I knew nothing about JJs before I started watching her. I watched her beginner series, and a couple on different ways to bind. All of this was new to me, it it appealed to me to use up my stash.
I hope the link helps.
I made one as a challenge journal. So no writing until I write the challenges in it. I made it with note paper, and charts to write the challenges. Annforte3 made us a chart to put throughout the journal. It is more of a mini journal for one of the mini challenges. You could make one as a travel journal. You would decorate with the items you make, it whoever you give it to, would write details in it an put items from their trip in it, even photos.
I LOVE the idea of including a 'junk journal' section here, but would change the name to art journal, or creative journal or even treasure journal. I use stamps, dies, colored pencils , stencils, and many of my card making tools. I've done Bible art journaling for over 5 years . Even though I might use up some of my 'junk' stash, I'd never consider it a junk journal.

I could be wrong, I'm not into journalling, but I think the junk journal is a specific "thing". Maybe a bit more like a smash book? Certainly in the gallery we have categories both for regular art journalling and Bible art journalling. People do plenty of both.
Sorry, I know both those say the same thing, but they are in fact two different galleries. Linking is problematic at the moment, and I'm not on a computer.
In terms of ongoing chat, there may be older threads that aren't showing because they haven't recently been active.
Sabrina, you are right. I’m sure I have seen separate threads for art journals and bible journalling, or at least chat threads...I think under Mixed Media.
To me a junk journal is what it says...using junk such as envelopes, junk mail, maps, stained papers, papers torn out of books/dictionaries, receipts, tickets, etc. It also uses papers out of your stash and emphera but the overlying premise is to include junk in there.
I created a pretty journal using Heartfelt Creations papers for my sister which had pockets, tags and emphera but it didn’t include junk and I wouldn’t put it under this category.
I have smash books and I bought the ones which have pre-printed papers, usually MM type and which you can journal in and “smash in” items you collect such as receipts, tickets, photos, etc. I use them when travelling. I think they also would come under this junk journal category.
I believe Kelly started this thread specifically for junk journals??
Happy weekend everyone

Bible Art Journaling: journaling about one's faith thru artwork, often has words and actual journaling as well but is primarily about the artwork on the pages. Not actually a new "thing", think illustrated bibles in ancient times.
Bible Journaling: Writing about one's faith in their bible is a practice that has been used forever. While many started using the term for doing artwork in the bible as well, it was easier in my mind to differentiate between the two.
Art Journaling: Is also primarily an expression of one's thoughts and feelings thru artwork. Again may contain words and/or journaling but is mostly about focused expression thru art.
Junk Journaling: Falls somewhere between art journaling / scrapbooking and keeping a diary. It is usually for writing things down but with lots of crafty things and sometimes pictures included. It probably did start as a way to create journals using recyclables but as with most "trends" has morphed into using purchased materials, even things from one's stash. I would argue that using stash is recycling of a sort though. It has enabled me to use things I was probably not going to use otherwise instead of tossing them.

Hello--just found this via the Weekly Inking email
I listened to Julie's October challenge you tube and I think she mentioned something about watching a "details" video to understand about the challenges. I didn't see a video like that on her playlist. Do you have a link?
As I understand the October challenge, it is to complete a junk journal that has 22 elements (11 each embellishments and tag/card) following her Stashbuster rubric.
What wasn't clear is if the challenge includes "filling up" the journal by writing in it, pictures of family, etc.
Personally, I make journals to gift to others. So, I don't "complete" a journal in that sense, but I do make a "finished product", if you know what I mean.
Can you clarify?
Hi Sonya
Sorry I'm behind. I got hit with sinus infection the end of September and playing catch up in my business, finishing the baby albums... well, you get it lol
I will get a link for the Details video in just a couple of minutes and put it in it's own post.
I totally understand the 'not finishing' part.
In connection with the challenges, 'finishing' means completing the challenge elements.
Filling up includes adding the elements themselves and could possibly include other items you want to make or page decor.
Happy you joined us!

Hi Deb
There were other threads covering some of those other journals but not specifically for 'junk' journaling. Using up recycling and our stash.
There are a lot of different takes on what a junk journal actually is. Some say it's only things you would throw away. But there's also -one man's trash is another man's treasure- aspect to consider. Evident in the amount of journaling supplies to be found in thrift stores/ charity shops, etc.
To me - Junk Journals encompasses a lot of things that may or may not all be the same with elements made from lots of bits n pieces, or to use up my stash.

I know I'm slow getting back in here but should be better now. I will have a flip-through of my October journals on Monday. Had hoped for tomorrow but I have business obligations and errands today before the cold/ wet/ moves back in for the next 6 days.

Here is one of the number cards I used in my October Daily album last year. The base is a flinch card from Julie's etsy shop then die cuts/ punches from Stampin' Up!
All about using what we have.

I heard her say it too. I don’t know. When I heard her mention it, she was talking about her items in her kits. Kelly? Can you tell us what a flinch card is?
Thanks Kelly for starting this thread! I have created a few junk journals (most of them are travelers notebook size) and I love using up stuff from my stash :-)
Thanks. Seemed like a good fit since I had girls from here following my YouTube channel. Sharon and Ann have even jumped in and joined our monthly challenge. We're having fun. Come join us!

You're right, the ink can get pricey. I can usually get 2-3 kits from a cartridge. I think it depends on the type of printer you have as well.
You can also take your jump drive to a copy center and have them print. I think they charge by the color print. Might be worth pricing.
In the mean time, I'll ask Julie this morning. I usually get quick responses in the Patreon group but I'm sure if you post to the Scrap All About It with DearJulie Julie FB group, you'll get a wide variety of answers. lol

The video of one of the baby albums is up this morning. Keep in mind, this is not a full-on junk journal. I used the elements I made from the october challenge plus stuff from my stash.
The cover is 'junk' as I used chip board from DSP paper pad packaging and an Amazon bubble envelope
I'm putting the finishing touches to album 2 plus adding in a couple of things I forgot in album 1.
... and deep cleaning the laundry room/ kitchen. Ugh!

I found a 1935 vintage game on Ebay for $9 with free ship. When it gets here I will mail you some of the cards, Sharon.
Jayne, do you want some, too? It comes with 150 cards, so plenty to share.
So much for the using up idea.....
Oh Sonja I would love some but please don’t feel you have to as I know postage is expensive. Thank you for thinking of me. If there’s anything from Oz you would like, just ask. Wow, I’m excited. I love vintage. Hugs jx
