Ok everyone I'm looking for a new bone folder. One that won't make the card stock shiny when you crease it. I usually use the bone folder that I got from Michaels from Martha Stewart. It works ok but I chipped the edge. I have the ones that come with scoreboards but the edges are sharp and not rounded and when I go to run it down my fold, the card stock gets shiny. Amazon has a ton of different plastic ones and then I found some really expensive "real" bone ones but it's a bit out of my price range. So what is your favorite and why?
While I don’t have one, some of the other crafters swear by Teflon Bone Folders. Amazon has some for about 12.00.
When I use my scoreboard I don’t use a bone folder ( I have trouble with the bone folder being to thick and jumping out of the track) I use a metal stylus.

I too use a stylus for scoring but when I want to fold my card base and firm down the crease that is where I use the bone folder. I usually just try and use my fingers to fold the card but I like crisp seams...lol
I have seen it said that the Teflon ones don't make the card shiny. So, maybe theres some kitchen implement that might do the job, as many of those come Teflon coated?
I love my bone folder from Stampin Up. It's nice and smooth and great for smoothing your fold. I also have an old Martha Stewart one, but don't use it anymore because it does have a sharper edge. If I loose my SU bone folder, I'll be getting another one just like it. I just checked and they are $7.00, but of course that doesn't include shipping or tax.
You can't beat the Teflon folder.........buy it and you won't be sorry. It never leaves the card stock shiny. I took my bone folder to the sewing kit when I got the Teflon one and now use it when I turn fabrics and need to gently push out the corner seams. Works better than anything I bought specifically for that job in the sewing section. As usual, who knew?
Teflon bone folder love , any decent brand - just read reviews on Amazon if you go there.
I don’t use it for actual scoring in a scoreboard, instead using the plastic bone folder in the Scor-Pal - or some use a stylus. The pointed tip of a teflon bone folder can wear down over time. But the point isn’t used when creasing cardstock anyway.
Someone came out with a really cool set of them either last year...year before...different shapes and functions...I thought they looked great. If I didn't already have two....I was still considering one of the shapes..round with a sharpened end like a fat pencil....
dang it I cant remember who it was....does this familiar to anyone?
Big vote here for teflon. And it lasts for-EVER. Great one time investment tool.
Having said that I do find some papers lend themselves to shiny more than others. I dont know why.
Just a note on my experience. A couple of years ago I succumbed & purchased the cheapest teflon I could find on Amazon, somewhere in the $11-$12 range. True, it doesn't make a shine on creases. However after many years of using the SU 'bone' folder, I really just do not like the skinny little bone folder I received for the "Yes, I pinched" lower price. Hand comfort. Hence, I nearly always reach for my yellowed SU or similar models of plastic bone folder. If you want a larger one, you might want to check the listings & pay the piper. ;)
Gads...$11-12 now??? I paid $25 for my Teflon bone folder years ago...and it's still doing well. I guard it with my life because it was so pricey...and I now I see it's half the price...hmmm. Mine is a pretty thick folder, maybe that's why it's held up. Everything everybody says about these is true...fortunately!!
I've had and loved my SU bone folder for over ten years. I first heard of the Teflon bone folder over 5 years ago. I think Jennifer McGuire has had it on her annual list of favorite tools year after year. When I saw how expensive it was, and knowing I was quite content with my SU bone folder, I didn't see the need. To be honest, it wasn't even the price that put me off buying it. (I admit that I have my moments of "Gotta have it, who cares how much it costs? I work hard, I deserve it.") Not sure what changed my mind, it was probably on sale for a big discount. I bought it a year or two ago, and I LOVE IT. I'm kicking myself for not buying it ages ago. I still have, use and love my SU bone folder for little, quick folds. But my Teflon folder is now my first love. Just checked, and Simon Says and Ellen Hudson have them. They a few dollars cheaper at Ellen Hudson.
To eliminate the shine you get when using a bone folder on a card, just lay a piece of copy weight paper over the top of the card before creasing. No shine! I see where one respondent suggested using a strip of card stock. That works too, but I like using a regular sheet of paper or copy paper because it's thinner and you get a better crease. I'm surprised more people haven't suggested this. So easy and a very cheap solution to the problem.
I used paper before getting a bone folder and it works well. It’s a first world problem lol but having a “right” tool for any process makes it a bit more enjoyable and efficient for me, one less thing to think about/reach for/have at hand, whether at home or at an LSS. Just a nice flow. This goes beyond bone folders of course.
Just personal preference, and I think your and Scrapjanny’s hint are also helpful.

I haven't bought one yet, but I'm definitely wanting a teflon bone folder.
Lots of people recommend the Lawn Fawn one. Trinity Stamps has 2 different styles for sale (the non-traditional one is intriguing!)--the best deal is the bundle.
The cost has kept me from getting one--and this thread makes me feel that it's worth it to spend the extra money for a better quality one.
I have the Teflon Bone Folder from SSS-it was about $25. It developed a little ridge in the flat end. I guess, I've been folding in the same spot! LOL So, I went for a larger one I found on Amazon. It wasn't as expensive either, but don't remember which one it was. It said it was teflon, but it feels different, BUT it works the same--- NO SHINY!!! ;) I've recently seen that Taylored Expressions has one out now--- more ergonomic. But as I look, I don't see it.
Interesting discussion. I use a wood bone folder that I have had, it seems, as long as I have been stamping- and that is close to 30 years. Was that the only option way back when? It still works perfectly, generally no shine, no rough edges. After reading here, I feel like I should want a Teflon one, but why fix what isn’t broken?
Just for a giggle, I thought I'd mention that, before I had a bone folder, I used to use a butter knife to score my cardstock. It actually worked pretty well. Ah, the good old days!
I'll be honest, the mark my bone folder makes is negligible. And if you only flatten on one side of the card, you can make that side the back of the card.
I can think of many other items to spend my money on besides a bone folder. Grant you $12 +\- isn't a lot of money for a tool, but I must have at least 4 on hand already and they get the job done just fine.
Have a few bone folders. Most of the day to day ones are teflon. Picked them up from Colophon.
The real bone ones I like were made in a workshop with ShannaLeino. She and Jim Croft, who both create hand made book tools, typically provide/use elk bone.
Hmmm that is very similar but not the what I was thinking of.
I finally found them again...
From Dress my Craft-there are 6 of them. They are at scrapbook.com and other places. These vids are a little long. I would start the first one (4 pcs) at 5 minutes. I scoot them along. They have some book binding functions etc.

This is a part two with the other 2 pieces. This includes #1 and the ergo. # 1 and # 2 are the same-just different sizes for different sized hands.

I am still thinking about the pencil. The odd shaped one-the lifter seems intriguing but I dont think I would have enough use.
