Question Pan Pastels

Have any of you worked with Pan Pastels?
I've been checking them out on Youtube and I plan on adding them to my medium collection.
What do you like or dislike about them?

I have a lot of them. Don’t care for them. Unless you seal them, they just don’t stick and stay for me. Maybe if you are doing a picture for the wall and put spray sealer on it?  And they were pretty pricey considering I don’t use them.  The colors are somewhat dull too.  I guess because it’s a powdered chalk.

That's good to know. Have you used them water like watercolors?

No I have not tried them with water.  Do you want me to experiment?

Thanks for the offering to test them with water, no need to do so.
I'm having second thoughts about going down that rabbit hole. My money will be better spent on liquid water colors, PH Dr Martin's Hydrus collection.

I know without thinking hard that what I am suggesting is NOWHERE NEAR the artist-quality, highly-pigmented pan pastels but, if you just want to play with chalk, cheap eye shadow is a fun way to go. You can get matte and shimmery, and lots of colors in one palette. I have 4 palettes (18 colors each) from LA Colors, and I think they were only $3 or $4 apiece. I am looking closely at the Sofft tools, though - those might be worth investing in...

I just watched our fave frugal crafter use them on a gel plate:     She has other videos/posts about them.

I think the Pan Pastels are wonderful to work with; you just want to work with the right tools so the application is smooth and easy. They blend so well; they are a world of difference between the craft pan pastels put out by craft companies and the professional Pan Pastels. They do need some type of spray fixative but that's not a big deal. They work well on all types of surfaces. I have them all and even though they are not an every day medium that I use, I am totally happy that I purchased them and have kept them. Yes, they're expensive but they'll last you a very, very long time.

I've found them very easy to use for backgrounds - we have a couple of tutorials on the site:

Oop, I just skipped through Lindsay's video and now I want to play all day instead of workingggg........

I vote for playing, but then, I’m in jury duty, waiting to see if I get called for a trial...

I have wanted the Pan Pastels for FOREVER! LOL But, the price ALWAYS holds me back! I bought pastel sticks, but they are hard. Not the same thing as sponging them on with the little tools they offer. I also heard they don't stay put, nor do the sticks of pastels. But, someone told me the Spellbinders "Pastels" DO stay put. So, there's that thought for you all! ;)<3

P.S. Will have to check out all the video's everyone has mentioned! ;)<3
