Default How many made BGs do you have?

So over time I have often seen how people will go hit their stash of made BGs from either past challenges, tutorials, or just for funs to make a card. People can say they made it three years ago....

How many made BGs do you have?

How are you storing/organizing them? By technique? Color? When you made it? Other? Doesn't matter?

I just have a fridge bin for UFOs (unfinished objects) in card front size in no order. My gel press prints which are 8.5 x 11, are in an elfa basket hanging on the inside of my closet door. I probably have a hundred UFOs and a hundred prints, but I do use them regularly

I've easily got a couple hundred. Gel prints are in a folder. I usually print a full sheet of paper. Smaller pieces are sorted by color then technique. Dry embossed and stamped or printed are in one bin, watercolor or ink blends are in another bin. I use them on a regular basis. It's almost impossible for me to just make one panel when I'm playing. The hard part is remembering how I made it if I want to duplicate!!!

I have never counted. I have a shoebox full, but that's full along the width, not the length, because a lot of them are book pages (gel prints) or half pages of card (cling wrap backgrounds). Both those are ones that I make a bunch at a time, though not more than six cling wrap because of the longer dry time. The rest is mostly spares from techniques, or made for a card and then not used because I went in a different direction. Some really messy ones will end up being punched or die-cut, but most are good backgrounds in their own right.
Not stored in any order, I just rummage through them.

WOW! I am a big slacker, I guess, and I have maybe a dozen laying around, some in a Christmas-cards-to-finish pile that I tackle a bit every day. Maybe I need to break out the Brushos and make some more.

Yes, I only have 10 or so around. I keep them in a clear stamp pocket. I usually make a bunch but then use them over the next 1-2 months. I do have a few that are old but not too many.

However, someone mentioned Unfinished Objects, and I do also have a small bin of those. It might be a background stamp I decided not to use on a card after all, or smaller stamped pieces, ATCs etc.

I.Am.Impressed!!! My honest-to-goodness true answer is ZERO! I do have a small drawer of UFOs, but they are diecut bits or pre-stamped but not colored images - things like that. You all are prolific!

I've got quite a few. I saw where people were using strips of scrap paper to make backgrounds. That gave me an idea and to make a long story short, my DH who never really had a hobby, seemed intrigued with the end result. Sooo, now he makes really cool backgrounds on index cards, with a glue stick, scissors, my extra paper trimmer and his very own big box of scrap paper.

He counted 35 assorted ones and 44 Christmas ones, 8 Thanksgiving ones.

Oh, he asked for more scraps the other day. He needed more colors! Guess I'll have to go paper shopping. 😁

BG= background. But it could be large panels say from gel prints that gets cut down to make a background or a small panel or whatever...

I don't have any myself. I do however have a very healthy mountain of DP.

I have one shoebox of DP pads, plus a vinyl record case for 12x12 (I buy more now that I often make my own envelopes). In my case, I most usually gravitate towards my background box first, and then the DP.
Pre-coloured images I find almost impossible to use. I do colour when I'm sick in bed, but I still have some from two years back. So that's not something I tend to accumulate. Pre-stamped but uncoloured comes even lower down the list of likely-to-use, generally.

Well I don’t have any! Until I read Sue’s response, I thought I must be the only person not making backgrounds! In fact I first thought the question meant how many BG STAMPS one has... shows how little I know about that segment of cardmaking haha

I thought the exact same thing the first time I read it (bg stamps vs actual backgrounds) - glad I'm not alone in that AND the "no, I don't have any of those" club...!

If I'm playing with something messy like acrylic paints or ink refills in shaving cream, I just keep going until I've used up all available drying space, nearby paper and the product!!!!

I have a hanging file folder in front of each group of colors of solid cardstocks in a file cabinet, and what is in that folder is printed papers I ripped out of 6" pads that I think I will use, fairly large scraps ( like from 12" sheets) and backgrounds I have made...

so, there are gel prints and technique backgrounds in every single color group 'cept yellow I think, maybe no purples either... but the green folder is stuffed to the gills.

Right now, I have zero. But I went on a big tear where I either used them, finished the unfinished cards, or gave them to a friend to repurpose because they weren't sparking joy.

I am going through a Kon Mari process with my craft stash.

I have never had more than a few set aside. After attending Lydia's stamping retreat I came home with around 20 or so. It's life changing! I am in the midst of a big project right now but when I finish with that I want to pencil in regular time set aside as background day. It's amazing to be able to just reach for a fun background. A lot of techniques take drying time so having a day to just get artsy without a project in mind takes the pressure off.

I started digging through stashed backgrounds, cutting long angled strips, and rolling them into beads. Those are going to be some of my favorites, for sure.

I think I have almost fifty. I keep them in a little drawer right above my scrap paper drawers. Like Carla, every time I make something messy, I make extra until I’ve properly used up the paint. I hate to let things go to waste! Or some of my leftover backgrounds are techniques that I feel like I have no control over how it’s going to actually turn out. I always make multiples of those so I can choose my favorite and let the others grow on me.

What is the answer? I am new to card making and Splitcoaststampers, too.
And I do not know how to navigate websites very well either. It takes me forever to figure out what I am doing.

I am assuming BG is "background". Would this be the same as a "card front" that is applied to a card base?|? I am wondering if you could show a picture of a few of your BG? I am new to card making, and it takes me forever to navigate websites like this one, as it is one is HUGE! Thank you.

BG is backgrounds, yes. Not so much a card front, but a sheet of paper or card created using some background technique. My stash is mostly cling wrap backgrounds and gel prints, but there would also be things like marbled nail polish, shaving foam backgrounds, distress oxides on photo paper and so on. Things where if you're making one, it's too much mess not to go on and make several more.
This card, for instance, the wreath was for a technique challenge and in looking for something to make a card with, I pulled the gel print from my stash: Jingle Bells by Cook22 - at Splitcoaststampers. The background would have been made a couple of months ago or more.

Stacy, that's funny. I create green backgrounds all the time but I use them faster than I create them. My bag of green scraps is always the slimmest.

A lot of my uploads tend to say "I used a background from my stash".

I have at least two drawers full of gel prints, bubble wrap bgs, oxide sheets. Every time .i do a technique, I play and make several sheets. I mean you might as well make a bunch when you are making a mess! LOL

So, what happens is when you are in the middle of doing it, why stop at one? do a stack and you have some for later. ( and green is my favorite so, I tend to do more more greens and blues than say pinks or yellows)
and I think most of my card bases tend to be colored so, I always have more green colors of scraps being made into tags and 3X3 bases than other colors.

This is an old photo from my blog of yupo alcohol inked backgrounds drying. what makes me stop is when I run out of flat drying surface space.

Too many to count of DP and Plain cardstock offcuts (in drawers colour co-ordinated) Just about to bundle them up and give them to my daughter to use at work (Kindergarten teacher.) BGs is a growing pile, mostly made with left over paint and/or glitter sprays, but I use them quite often with diecuts.

In this case BG is referring to backgrounds that are created (as opposed to purchased designer paper)

If you go to the upper right of this page (or the 3 small lines at the top right if you are on a smartphone,) click on tutorials. There are many fabulous techniques that are easy, and some more difficult.

Here is one of my faves: Shaving Cream Tutorial - Splitcoaststampers

Here is another: Watercolor Bokeh Tutorial - Splitcoaststampers

And another to get you started: Nail Polish Marbling Tutorial - Splitcoaststampers

You can use backgrounds for a full card front, or smaller panels, die cuts... lots of options! There are a number of techniques which use different types of ink, methods of moving the ink, etc. I don't have ANY now, but when I make a card with a special background, I do make multiple panels.

Since you asked for samples, I am attaching this old pic I found on my laptop. I had done the shaving cream technique with grandkids, then made other panels for a Spring Virtual Stamp Night challenge. I actually had my inked up shaving cream sitting for a while, so it was oxidized. Lydia posted that as a fun challenge later on!

I am also attaching links to actual cards so you get an idea of how to use them. This site has a boatload of info to get your creative juices flowing! Have fun exploring!

I hate to sound like an old fuddy duddy, but I have a real problem with this entire website - tooooo many abbreviations! Would it break your fingers to type out "backgrounds" instead of using "BG". And it's not the only one. When it takes too long to figure out the real meaning, it is counter productive to the entire site. Please!!!! Just type it out!!!!!!!!

Default Abbreviations...

I agree...how much time are you saving by not typing out the entire word(s)? Glad to have new stampers and it's very unfriendly to them to have to guess. I'm not new, and I didn't even understand BG....;)

Actually I'm going through my minimal stash of backgrounds to use on Christmas cards this year...and thrilled to be able to use them! When I first learned about alcohol inks, I must have made 50 sheets and STILL have some from years and years ago!

Haha I've got you all beat. I thought she meant Basic Grey at first! lolol
And I was gonna answer yes because I am still using Basic Grey 12x12 collection paper. :p

Default How many backgrounds do you have?

Another issue besides abbreviations is "autocorrect"! I often have to retype several times to say what I really mean to say!

Not to minimize the frustration, just to give a heads up to where a list of *commonly used* abbreviations are located (and you can open a new window to go to splitcoaststampers.com to not lose your place):

“Forum” is at the top of every page.
Click or tap on that and “Start Here” is on the page that pops up.
And tap or click on that: “What do all those acronyms mean?”

I have 2 plastic boxes. one with solid color pieces in it and the other with designer paper cut pieces in it. that's all I have, other than the designer pads that can easily be cut to any size background I need. then the rest of that goes in the dp box for later use.

Tidal Birthday by berlycece - at Splitcoaststampers

Virtual Caffeinated Ride! by berlycece - at Splitcoaststampers

Virtual Happy Birthday by berlycece - at Splitcoaststampers

Kim! What a great resource for those hoping to add to that stash!

I don’t have a ton, but have them organized by color. I have mostly gotten to the point of writing on the back of them which technique was used.

Thank you creative tribe!

Thank you for posting this...so I checked it out, and ironically, BG is NOT even on the list! Says the last time it was updated was 2013! WAY too many of these abbreviations though...just spell it out...please!
