Heart Orange MIX346 - Faux Reductive Painting Technique

Challenge Title: Faux Reductive Painting Technique
Hostess: UnderstandBlue (Lydia Fiedler)

Keyword: MIX346

VIEW THE GALLERY FOR THIS CHALLENGE

Years ago, I took a reductive painting class at Jerry's Artarama. We made crazy bright, abstract acrylic paintings, let them dry, and then had to paint the negative space around a shape of our choosing. I chose a pear because it was simple. I loved that painting so much it's still on my mantel!

So I wanted to adapt that to stamping, and here's what I came up with! Use a Gel Press print as I did, or patterned paper, or an inked background, and a die, and then a mask as I have done to block out the positive space, covering the rest with black paint. Enjoy!

Oh, that sounds like fun. I should have something suitable I can use for the colour base, and thinking what mask to use will occupy the journey home. I left work early and owe half an hour to next week.

I've done so much overtime in the last two weeks that I treated myself to the TH umbrella man die, finally. Not even waiting for Moddy Christmas even though I had to order from Amazon.com. I definitely want to try this technique with him when he arrives ...I'll try and make a nice blue background to have all ready to go.

Now that WAS fun: MIX346 Rejoice in Black

It reminded me a lot of Dina's masking with die-cuts tutorial, so I think I'd like to try again this evening or tomorrow with a couple of layers of masks, but it requires more forward planning than I'm capable of right now, like the layered batik tutorial. I'm not good at thinking ahead (or backwards) in colour layers. So much easier to paint over the mask than sponge carefully.

Hunh I think that is so cool.
( I am mentally reviewing pulled prints from work and I know I do not have any with bright colors so, I am wondering how it will work with paler shades) (maybe the puppy will nap long enough for me to find out, cross your fingers)

Most of my gel prints tend to be darker, so I went for a cling-wrap background. I can think of some DP that it would look fantastic with too. I hope you get a chance to try it out.

If I did art journalling, I'd have stuck this into a journal. Since I don't, I made it up into a card which I am sure I will send out at some stage. Still having fun with this .

Well, I can see I need some time to create wild abandon Gelli's. Thanks Lydia for a short, fun 'You can do this video tutorial'!

What was the mask like material you used?

I used some Tim Holtz masks I’ve had in my stash forever rather than a stamped or die cut image - fun technique, thanks Lydia!
