Just Curious... About Tags
Hi Everyone!
This may seem like a silly question...
Is it strange to make a large tag and send it to someone like a regular card?
To those of you who make tags, what do you do with them? Use them as gift tags only?

Not strange at all! I have two crafting friends who make tags and send as Birthday & Christmas cards. They stand out because they're different.

I have never thought of sending a large tag as a card but I love that idea! It would be fun to hang it for display!
When I make tags, it is as a gift tag and as an embellishment on a scrapbook page. You've given me a new way to use them. Thank you!

I like the idea of a tag in place of a card. If I ever received one, I would be likely to keep it and use it as a bookmark. With cards, I keep them a while but almost always end up throwing them away eventually.

I make tags of all sizes and styles and use them as the focal layer on cards, on scrapbook pages for journaling and tiny photos and on gifts.

I have not done it but there are very large tag dies out there-like the size of a card. I agree. It would be a nice variation on a notecard for example.

Thanks so much for the positive feedback, everyone! I'll feel more confident about sending a tag in lieu of a card now!
Whenever I see amazing tags people have made, I think about how thrilled I would be to receive one. I would never throw it away nor would I want to tuck it away in drawer somewhere - I would want to keep it out on display.
It got me thinking it might be nice to send a tag that is not for a specific occasion or holiday - just something for everyday that is pretty, cheery or funny, that sort of thing - and the recipient can hang it up somewhere and enjoy it for as long as they want, if they choose to.
I like fl_beachbum's suggestion of using one as a bookmark - hadn't thought of that! I'm not a scrapbooker so I didn't know tags are used for that - that was my lesson for today!

I put the tag on a card LOL.
I haven't made any larger than a cardfront, though.

Yes, that seems to be how normal people do things... LOL. I've seen a lot of tag-on-cardfront cards in the gallery. For some reason I never think of using them that way - my mind isn't programmed right I guess  Up until now, I've only ever used tags for gifts.

Hi wavejumper! Do you happen to remember which company(s) makes the larger sized tag dies?

Depending on the embellishments (or lack thereof), I would think you could send a tag like you would a postcard - no envelope or anything! One of the most beautiful Christmas trees I ever saw in a magazine was decorated entirely with tags and white twinkle lights, so there's another use for them, too...

Thanks so much for your post, gregzgurl! I like the postcard idea - you've got me thinking! Love the idea of a tag tree, it sounds so pretty - wish I had seen that magazine photo! When I have time, I'll Google it!

Thanks for your input, bjeans! When I first started thinking about sending tags in lieu of cards, I had the exact same thoughts as you, which is what prompted me to create this thread. My crafty friends would 'get it' but I wasn't so sure about others. Your reply, as well as others, regarding bookmarks has got me wanting to try my hand at making them - thank you!

also not wavejumper but...
this one from Mama Elephant, the largest tag in the set, if you were to lay it on an A2 cardfront there is not much of the cardfront peeking out around the edges..

If you google “large tag dies cards” or “large tag dies card making” you’ll find quite a few sets out there. I have another set but am not home right now and don’t remember who made it another time.

I usually make a hole at the top of bookmarks, and often laminate them - some are quite tag-like. : )

Tags are really great for so many things, I make many larger ones, (Marianne Dies makes a few really big and decorative ones), and use them as cards, but also in different sizes on cardfronts or to go into a small pocket inside the card, especially if I makae it into a giftcard for someone, and I also use a lot to go into minialbums to make more space for photos and also for journaling as well.
I always use tags, when I try out a new technicque f.ex. or just want to give a try to a new idea, that pops up in my head, and then I also laminate some to use as bookmarks or things like that, so I really think you can use tags for so many things. I´m always short of tags for other projects.

This is an idea that I've been toying with. One of our fellow SCSers, ruby-hearted mom, makes ATC versions for all of the technique challenges and I've been considering doing the same thing but as tags rather than ATCs. I've always loved tags and if I do go this route I could probably generate enough to decorate a Christmas tree (see post #15 above)...

Ive made pocket cards that have Tags slipped in so the person can use the tags for gifts if they'd like. Here's one of the ones I did.

I love tags! Between my Mom and I, we have all three sizes of Tim Holtz Bigz Dies, tags. I wish he would come out with an even larger size of the Bigz Tags. There is plenty of room on the die for a large one...maybe I should send him an email... Anyway, I have used them for cards, gift tags, etc...Some years that is the only tag I use for Christmas gifts. I have made them ornate enough to hang on the tree as an ornament.

I have a bag of assorted tags I'm about to get rid of. Never like the idea of them, on a card or other. I purchased as a group I meet with monthly insisted on giving us a "theme" of tags regularly.

I purchase my tags from.. Ranger, Inkssentials. They come in all sizes, #8, I use the most, #10 is the large one. They have Journaling tags under Dylusions brand. Tim Holtz has distress tags, heavy weight, #8 size which is good for mixed media work. I usually reinforce my tags with cereal box or any other product cardboard. Helps them stay straight when you add lots of media or collage on them. Glue together using FabricTac glue..works great.

The other tag set I have is My Favorite Things Blueprints #9. They don't sell it any more (I don't think) but other places have it.
The tag itself is very large: About 4" x 5.25". The set has add-ons, some that I haven't quite figured out  - reinforcements, a rectangle with angled corners, tabs, a wide band, etc. There's also a 5.25" "line" with a half circle that lets you make a tag any length you want or it could be used to make a slit to insert something in - or as a pocket on the tag.

We can't delete posts....
That text duplicating all over the place happens to me all the time when I insert images. For the next time, you can prevent it by adding a couple of blank lines after your text, and making sure the cursor is at the very bottom of the box before trying to insert images.
Your tags are really beautiful.

Wow!!! I can't believe the response my little ol' thread has received - far bigger than I expected! I appreciate it so much! I wish I could reply to each and every post. :(
Thank you everyone for the creative support, suggestions, product information, photos and inspiration! It's been fun and interesting to read and so helpful!
I don't know how I'm going to choose between all of the great tag die sets you've told me about! While checking out Mama Elephant's tag die, I discovered SHAKER TAGS!!! Oh my gosh, so cute!
I'm going to be on a 'tag kick' for quite some time! Does anybody know where I can get a bumper sticker that says Mad For Tags or Crazy Tag Lady? Ha Ha ;)

Ha ha... You've transported me back in time! If I remember correctly, they were made of paper and used to tear or not stick well, and then the plastic ones came along... so much better!
The set has add-ons, some that I haven't quite figured out
That could be a fun new thead - Add Ons That You Haven't Quite Figured Out. LOL. ;)
