Question No Dyan Reaveley @ Big Box Stores?

What's up with Dyan Reaveley products, all existing merchandise was clearanced out and none of her new stuff is being sold at any of the 3 big box stores.

Anyone know why and/or what's going on?

I've noticed that too. I wonder if she is no longer a signature designer for Ranger, like Tim Holtz and Claudine Hellmuth.

Ranger still promotes her creations on its blog, so I don't think that Ranger dropped her. Their latest release of her products was July 12. But big box stores won't carry what they aren't selling, and they usually drop items quickly if they're not selling, so that may be why they disappeared. (actually that applies to all stores, not just big boxes)

Just my opinion, but that might be one factor in small stores not being able to make it. The owner usually buys what she likes and so she caters not to the entire market, but to the people who like the same things she does.

Wouldn't it be more accurate to say that big box stores will drop a product if it is not selling fast enough? An art chain here in Australia started selling Tim Holz products and stopped so fast that the first many people knew of it was the clearance sale. Why they added a new product line in January (the summer holidays period for us) I don't know.

The last time I strolled through JoAnn's I noticed smaller stocks of national brand and more of their own brands of paper, stamps, embellishment, etc. Maybe Dina did not make the cut. HSN recently added a handful of her things.

Tulsa has a Michael's which has a Big section for paper crafts. There's a 6 ft section with racks top to bottom of Reaveley. It's kind of new since their recent re-do. I think her style is so specialized that not many will buy her style.
I was very surprised to see a full aisle of rolls of vinyl to cut with a machine!

I haven't seen any of her products(stamps, paint, stencils) in any of the stores in a while...maybe 2 years! I went into Michaels and they had some journals and journaling pens was all. I heard Joanns was carrying her stuff and drove 25 miles to the closest big Joanns and found a few bits in clearance and bought some diary refills and tapes. I go online anymore to buy my crafting stuff cause no one around here carries anything much that I use. Very few craft stores besides Michaels except Hobby Lobby and I won't shop there!

Yes, I believe you are correct on stores pulling products that don't sell. I recently found that to be true with Darice embossing folders at HL.

Here's the TMI regarding Darice -- note the date at the end:
The Michaels Companies, Inc. announced on February 2nd that it had purchased Lamrite West, Inc. for $150 million dollars. Lamrite West was founded in 1954 by the Catanzarite family, and remained privately held until the acquisition by Michaels Companies.Feb 8, 2016

Lamrite was an international company based near Cleveland, Ohio, that manufactured and sold a wide variety of crafts supply brands including Darice embossing folders and jewelry findings, and owned the Pat Catan's craft stores in Ohio and western Pennsylvania. (Most of the Catans stores are now gone, with many converted to Michaels. Catans fans are still crying over this loss, as the merchandise mix was quite different from that at Michaels.)

In addition, Jo-Ann Stores is headquartered about half an hour away in Hudson, Ohio. JoAnns carried a lot of Darice products, but over the past three years has been shifting to other suppliers to avoid carrying what Michaels carries. Hobby Lobby has also been juggling suppliers in an effort to be different from Michaels.

There has been quite a lot of scrambling going on behind the scenes, hence the changes in the stores! I keep trying to shop at my one remaining family-owned scrapbooking shop just to keep her in business.

Thanks, Alice! That explains a lot as to why the supply has been dwindling. I don't have a local shop or big box in my little town so I guess if I want a Darice EF I'll have to go online to eBay or Amazon which I recently did. I liked them because the price was affordable. Oh, I just remembered I got some at Tuesday Morning a couple of years ago. Makes sense now.

The nearest Hobby Lobby to me is a bit of a drive but I try to go there a couple of times a year. I always find some goodies to buy.

The Hobby Lobby where I live put what little Dylusions and Dina Wakley Media items it had on clearance in the spring. I bought Dina's journal at a huge discount and picked up a couple of Dylusions paints from the handful that were left. Last time I was there they had replaced some of the items with Jane Davenport's brand.

Stacy- I think major stores are going in house brands since online ordering is more popular now. I read that a lot of stores, not just crafting, are going to carry more in house brands to make their stores feel more boutique and specialty. Even WalMart is doing it. The manager told me that the other day when I was complaining I couldn't get my name brand item from the store. Nothing says boutique, like WalMart, ROFL.

I know on my other forum when girls are asked where they are shopping for craft items that Amazon comes up more than the big box stores.

I was watching a YT the other day. This lady asked the YT lady where she was getting her cool supplies. She was asking about Ranger Alcohol Inks. The lady replied she gets them off of Ebay because her stores just don't carry those things any more.

Do you have any of the major art stores in your area, like DickBlick. They might have some of Dyan's items.

...figures now that I have Big Box Stores close to me they would become a waste of time to shop at, sigh.

I wish I had a decent art supply store in the area and I gave up on the few Joann's left around here as they are usually trashed and filthy.

I'm like so many others, it's a 25 to 50 mile drive to get to any one of the 3 big box stores and it's getting to where the drives just aren't worth it any more. I guess I have settled in to trying to use what I have before making any more purchases, but if I need something, I will order it from amazon or ebay or anywhere else I can find that will have prices that I can afford. tuesday mornings usually have a supply of stuff that has left the big box stores, so that may be an option for some. my wal-mart has gotten so snotty and hateful that I don't go in there much any more, we load up and drive across the county to the other wal-mart where the employees are friendlier. if I have to deal with their attitude, they don't get the pleasure of handling my money. the joanns closest to me looks very much like a dollar tree now, only with high prices. last time I was in there, they had about 15 stamps in the micro mini stamp wall, their fiskars hand punch aisle had shrunk down so that they had 2 tiny rows from top to bottom hanging there. their jewelry findings is a joke!!! looking for sewing needles is like looking for a needle in a haystack. hahaha $20 dollars a yard for some of the cheapest quilt backing material I ever seen. none of them are what they used to be and I'm afraid they will only have less and less. I don't know who makes all these decisions, but they sure aren't talking to the people who are spending their money on a lot of these supplies. and not a one of them look like boutique shops. hahaha patty

Absolutely correct Alice. I'm one of those criers. Pat Catan's is going to be sorely missed in Ohio. It's too bad the PC kids didn't want to keep the stores going. I'm hoping for a Tuesday Morning to open nearby. All we have now is JoAnn's (very limited choices) and Michaels (soon). Michaels is currently moving in all their clearance stock into the Pat Catan buildings. It's a mess.

I don't get to Michael's much because it is about 80 miles away. The last time I was there (late April), they had replaced some of the Golden acrylics with their own line of professional acrylics. Hobby Lobby had their stock of Liquitex Professional paints on clearance earlier this summer. The Paint Lady either didn't know or couldn't tell what the replacement would be, but an online friend and I have speculated it could be Hobby Lobby's own line of paint.

I know I went there I used the W word, ROFL. I hardly shop there any more because they don't have the things I need. I am not talking about art supplies. I am talking about like groceries, vitamins and beauty items. Too stressful. Ebay! No stress, lol.

The HL near me is pretty decent. I can always found treasures on clearance and get great prices for our crafting must haves. I have known a lot of the employees since I was a teenager in the 80's. It is a dog friendly so there are always dog friends in the store, including mine. HL is going to Master Touch instead of Liquitex. I don't know if Liquitex is making Master Touch. I know the paint companies do make paint lines for the new In House brands.

Michael's & JoAnn's are just junky in my area and cluttered. Not an enjoyable shopping experience. They don't have anything. The last few times I went I walked out empty handed. Everything is overpriced. You can get it cheaper on Ebay. I am talking about name brand items and not Panda Land items. I can get Liquitex mediums cheaper off of Ebay than the big box stores. I noticed that Michael's and JoAnn's are marking up their items so high that if you use a coupon it still comes out to retail price. The inventory is smaller. It doesn't look that way but it really is. They just have more of the same thing. I was so surprised by one whole aisle just of Cricut machines at my Michael's.

I love, love, love Tuesday Morning. I have just become a Tuesday Morning girl. I don't live close to it so I did not get into the TM trend until recently. It is worth it for me to go up there now. My store is hit or miss. One week I only walked out with two items. The two items I got I was so excited about. They matched two of my favorite scrapbook lines I have been collecting. It was such a huge score. The last time I went I walked out with a large bag full and everything was so frugal and nice quality. I paid like $40 for everything. Some of that was pet toys.

I know Stacy is shaking her head how spoiled my animals are, ROFL!

Count me as different. I love all the stores! I have Michaels, ACMoore, JoAnns all within 20 minutes. I wish Hobby Lobby were closer because I've only been there a couple of times. But I loved what I bought. I also wish we had a Tuesday morning. Those are way too far for me. I love my Walmart but not the craft section. Usually the craft stuff I got from them was online. I shop with gift cards and pick up at the store most times. Although, the last thing I ordered was the WeRMemory keepers 123 board. What a deal. I paid under $12 and they sent me a whole case! LOL. Yes, I reported it and they gave me a return label and sent fed ex to my door for the other 23! LOL my son had picked up my order, otherwise I would have known something wasn't right by the size and weight of the box! :p

Cool big box

I still go into them and take advantage as best I can with the 40% off coupon, but it takes them FOREVER, if ever, to get in newer stuff (why Michaels is such a big presence at Creativation, I'll never understand). All the big box stores are stale and not worth a special trip. And....when they do get "newer" stuff in it's much later than the release dates and in very limited quantities so shelves empty pretty quickly. They are okay for some basic stuff....seems to me they're shooting themselves in the foot by not being more up-to-date and faster with product, especially since THEY (Michaels in particular) ARE AT CREATIVATION!!!! I did notice this past spring, HL got some of the TH stuff in pretty quickly....again limited quantities that got bought up like SNAP!
