Default SU watercolor wonder crayons

I know these have been discontinued by SU for some time. But I like them and just started "collecting" them. I have the sublets, earth tones and brights. What I can't find is if the set of 48 is just most of the smaller sets or if it has quite a few different colors. Thanks in advance. Posting in ISO for more of them.

The set of 48 has the 4 color families that were active many years ago: Soft Subtles, Bold Brights, Rich Regals and Earth Elements. There was also a set of 6 Neutrals (black, very vanilla, sahara sand, going grey, charcoal, and white).

I have always liked these crayons. Great for taking lots of colors in limited space (like to retreats, travel, etc). I find I scribble on a craft mat and pick up with a wet paintbrush, but you can also color on the cardstock and wet-spread it from there,

How ironic that you posted this as I was just discussing them with my friends at a retreat last weekend. I have always loved them as well and asked them to keep a lookout for them! I only have the set of Regals but they have lasted forever- at least 12 years!

Love them all. Did a color chart on the ones I have. I love the softness of the subtles (love auto spell). I have the Crayola ones I got at Staples on clearance for $4 a month ago are the same as a set of 24 I got off Amazon. There are many colors individually or in sets on Dick's art supply. I also either color on my formica desk top and pick up with a water color brush or right off the crayon. I got my SU ones off Ebay.

I would love it if SU! came out with sets of watercolor crayons in their current colors. I would buy them all! Watercoloring is so popular now, too, that maybe it is in the works for SU! It is getting around that time of year where things will be retired and speculation will begin on what will be new in the next catalog!

I wish I knew so many people loved the watercolor crayons. I have had the original set for years. I never had luck using them and I had noone to teach me. I put them up in the Buy/Sell thread last year and no one was interested in them. I just donated them

Does anyone remember what the large set of watercolor crayons cost when it first came out? I have a set, practically unused, in the original tin that I am thinking of listing for sale. I'm in the process of weeding, photographing, and pricing right now. It's a process for sure! :-)

Thank you! I am going through my papers and will see if I can find more info on the set I purchased. If so, I will post it here. I appreciate your input!

$80 for the set of 48 colors seems to be about right. Sets of 12 were $19.95.

I saw a set of 48 on an ebay "sold" listing for $29.95.

Thanks so much, Diane! That is very helpful to know and I'd be happy with that. I've been in the hospital for the last two days taking care of my parents, but they are home now and I will get back to working on my list of items to sell. Good idea to check eBay for pricing. I appreciate your input!

They were new in the 2006-2007 catalog as four color families plus neutrals.

They were totally new in the 2005-2006 catalog as a set of 48.

Gadzooks! I forgot all about these! I have an original set of 48...I recall the were in the $60 range, but I could be wrong. I’m thinking I got them with hostess bennies from a big party.
I was never able to get very rich colors when I Watercolored with them. I love WC (particularly Peerless, which are very saturated colors). I will pull out the SU crayons and give them another go. May consider selling them if they don’t impress me.

I like the watercolor crayons. But I have put them in plastic boxes with a tiny bit of damp sponge since they tend to crack in my dry environment. So. It's the old "out of sight, out of mind" issue for me, even though they are on one of the shelves of my coloring tools. Seems like I should get them out and use them!

You're right. The set of 48 was $59.95. They cost more when split up into color groups.

I'm going to do the same as you...start playing with them again.

You are absolutely right! Out of sight, out of mind.
Mine went back in a drawer after I discovered that I couldn’t safely take them with me in our RV because they melt if subjected to hot temperatures. I remember arriving at a camp ground and taking the metal case outside to set up my craft table. The crayons were soft and very fragile! Scared me silly!
They are not a suitable watercolor medium in a hot environment. :(

And look at this piece of artwork. Yes, she is an advanced art student. No, this is not a card. But look at the possibilities!
