Title: ALAD Do it Daily
Hostess: Scrapacat (Ky)
Keyword: MIX310

How is your 2019 going? I cannot believe how quickly 2018 flew by. I spent new years day thinking about things. You know, I've been thinking about challenges. All our challenges focus on the end product. I like to think there's more fun in the journey itself!

I'll bet you made some resolutions. I heard you say you wanted to branch out and try new things. Yes. You said it! So, let's try new things TOGETHER!

Challenge: Every day of this challenge week I will post a new product, technique, or tool for you to use. With a twist - you won't finish anything each day. Nope.

We will do A Layer A Day. You can work on cardstock for a future card, you can work in a journal, on a tag, anything that gets your muse musing. There will be six layers and the final one will be the finished item. You can check my BunnyNest Blog daily for more info and supplies I've used.

Day One - Prime your canvas/cardstock/journal with gesso (jess-o) or a thin layer of mod podge and let it dry. Add a thick layer of crackle medium. No crackle medium? Here's is an inexpensive option.

Apply your crackle medium over the entire piece or just selected areas. Want to do shapes through a stencil? Apply it with a palette knife or old credit card. Or, pencil in your shape and apply the crackle within. It's your play time so try new things! Make more than one so you have options later, if you like.

Remember to use two or more mediums on your project. These mediums will add up over the week so you will have at least 2 mediums. See a list here for material suggestions. If you can't complete the whole week, feel free to finish and upload. I hope you do give it a go, at least! And yes, you can do all the combine steps or do them all at once if you don't have time daily. It's your journey!

Each day, post your progress shots in THIS thread. Please don't upload to the gallery until we have the finished items. You can also share your daily progress on social media with the hashtag #MixALAD19.

Make sure to put MIX310in the keyword section at the end of the week.

Find the MIX310 gallery HERE

This sounds like great fun Ky. Thanks for the reminder to post the work in progress shots here and NOT in the gallery. I guess I need to bookmark the thread for the week! I've had varying success with the paint and glue crackle so I don't know how well my first layer will work out but I'm up for giving it another go.

Sabrina, if the crackle doesn't work, substitute anything you like to get a first layer down. I'm excited to see what we coax out of a week of randomness!

Okay - so I have two pieces on the go.
I did try the glue and paint crackle on a piece of card, it didn't turn out great so I also stencilled over some not-quite dried up distress crackle paint, and we'll see what that looks like in the morning.
Since I also had a small canvas with a book page I decided to use that too, and just added some stencilling with texture paste.

I'm feeling nervous - not quite the right word but can't think of a better - about not knowing what's to come each day. I'm more of a planner ahead . But I'm certainly looking forward to it.

Default Today’s work...

Here's My Friday pages...Black Gesso, Second layer of Elmers, and then the Leaf Green paint. Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings...I don't like waiting or surprises really, so this is a step out of my comfort box!!!

I jumped off into the deep end. I am a total newbie to "messy" mixed media and am so excited that my "faux crackle" technique actually worked, especially since my Elmer's glue is about 25 years old! lol!!! Can't wait to see what the next layer will be! I used navy acrylic paint; once dry, Elmer's glue and then white acrylic were painted on. The crackle started happening immediately...yay!!!

Well done, Angella, that was a great result. It's really the same as the faux barn board tutorial here, and I've had more fails than successes with that! So I don't try it very often, and therefore can never remember which glue I discovered to work best for me.

I have a product called Crackle Accents, a dimensional crackle medium. I believe it's supposed to work like cracked glass. will this work or does it need to be more of a opaque thing? I do have a few bottles of sort of ok crackle paint. should i try this too?

Use what you have! I used white because it was what I had, also.

Jean, mine came out a lot like yours! Some very faint crackling. I, too, I'm struggling with the waiting to see what else Ky has in store for us!
Angie, your crackle came out amazing! Who knew that wicked old glue would come in so handy. LOL!

Day 2
We get to start thinking about where this is going. If you find your crackle product is flaking, seal it with glue or mod podge or gel medium

Pull out your scrap paper that has text or other black and white design. Tear it into strips and glue them down. Do the same with washi or masking tape.

You want to start thinking about your ending project. What is it telling you? Make a scene? An abstract for a great sentiment or quote? These thoughts will influence where and how you apply the paper and tape.

I'm seeing a scene in mine. Tall trees of pies for hungry dinosaurs. We'll be covering up the paper and tape a bit so don't worry if it looks too busy or harsh.

Are you letting the glue dry too long before applying the paint? Sometimes it won't crack if the glue is dry.

Thanks Ky, for the day 2 prompt...I am also seeing a landscape...what with all that green...people joke out here in Oregon, if you stand in one place too long, you'll find moss growing on you! Well on the wet side that is. Looking forward to getting out my texts and Washi's. And seeing how our MIX'ers grow

Wow Angie your faux crackle looks brilliant. I used a Tim Holtz Distress Crackle paint....24 hours ago......the only way this stuff will crack is if Timmy turns up at my house and I crack him over the head with it. Ky I am playing, I'll just be a bit late to the party!

Gosh, Susie, you started my day with a giggle. Mine was distress crackle paint and was cracking within minutes. Unfortunately the only one I had left was clear, I used up my white long ago. Now I'm worried because I remember distressing a picture frame with the white and distressed was the word, it flaked all over. Hoping I don't find a flaky mess on my desk.

My canvas I think will be a themed Paris piece, since the stencil I used was a map of Paris. The card piece, I'll wait for more prompts but I used a crystal structure stencil for the crackle, so it has a cold winter look.

Ahhh we will always have Paris. I love that expression, not that I've a clue where it originated from LOL. You could scribble on a brown paper bag Sabrina and I know it will look fabulous. Have a great day, I'm switching off for the evening.

Can't wait to see what tomorrow brings with this fun challenge. Night everyone.

Oooh I love this challenge. Yesterday I was playing with our poppets and we used gesso and pasting scraps and anything else we could find in our journals and then sprayed the pages. I will post what our 8 year DGS made so far in due course...it's awesome...well I am biased..lol.

I have crackle paste and will play along but may be late to the party.

Thanks for the challenge. Happy day

Morning all (yes, it's morning here finally). Besides the glass crackle stuff I used, I also tried the glue thingie on another sheet, I'll go downstairs and check it out. So I have three pieces going, don't have a clue what i will do with them.

Being conservative because I am by nature, and because this is a big exercise in trust as well as experiment!

Instead of script papers I stamped my own on tissue paper, so I used that and some washi tape and some black and white DP.

Sabrina, your second piece looks like a city map to me. Very cool!

I tore up my Block Island Ferry ticket from when we went with family in September, so my card is now a travel theme. And since I tore up a ticket, I used my ticket washi tape. I think the travel theme is appropriate--this is quite an adventure!

These are my three pieces. Two on the right have the clear cracking medium, only difference is the middle one is gray cs.I put it on very randomly, not sure if it's too random. The one on the left has the glue and paint process. I used an acrylic paint called blue wisp, let it dry, then added a layer of glue and a light layer of white acrylic. I did those last two layers together, wasn't sure if the glue should dry a bit first???? I like the anticipation by the way. Trust that it will be fine. I'm not sure what I will put on yet for text or washi, as nothing has hit me yet as far as what these could be. It may have to wait until tomorrow, got lots going on today.

Jen, you were much bolder than I was. (My stencil was a map).
Susan, that is gorgeous. Mossy velvety green, makes me think of forests and Japanese gardens.
Jean, when I've done the faux barnboard, I know you're meant to let the glue get tacky but not dry. I think that the idea is that then they're drying at different rates which is what causes the cracking.

OK I am all caught up. The yellow-green area is white gesso tinted with a few drops of watercolour ink, the bright blue area is white gesso tinted with cobalt blue Brusho powder. The denim blue and and white are Timmy's useless Distress Crackle Paint. The bright white is modeling paste....I couldn't help myself...not knowing what we are making is way out of my comfort zone LOL. After making my Barbie doll dress on Tuesday, I'm thinking of going for a fashion parade.

Can't wait to see what we all end up with.

Susie, I had the image of Eunice squeezing into a Barbie Doll dress when you mentioned your Tuesday project...either the best dream in the world, or the nightmare in kookaburra!

Luv all your textures...and mix of colors...loved the Timmie quote...i’ve Got rubbish cans full of said product that ‘went wrong’.

I'm running behind too! Blame it on Timmy's Crazing gel. I found that brushing on darker ink after the panel dries makes the cracks show more.

I forgot to take day 1 picture of this one. I stenciled TH vintage gel, sponged on red inks and then the crazing gel. Brushed red ink over the dried panel and was able to bring out the cracks a bit more.

The stenciling brought classical music to mind, so I adhered some music and text from an old Chopin music book. Added music washi tape. It was pretty ugly to start, but is growing on me!

And here's my second attempt.

Day 1, Gessoed, then layered TH Crazing gel on top. White on white, no cracks and boring!!! Brushed purple and green Distress ink over Shatter stencil. Dried then brushed darker inks to bring out the cracks.

Day 2, The green/purple color scheme remind me of a garden and the shatter looks like a spider web, going for a garden theme. Stamped sentiments on deli paper, adhered to panel and added washi tape.

I have another panel drying. Instructions on the TH crazing gel are to apply to porous material. I applied it directly over ink sponged panel. We'll see if I get more cracks from that one.

Looking forward to the next steps, Ky!

It does look like a web, Carla, it's beautiful. I'm glad I'm not the only one struggling with the not knowing what's next!

It seems I'm out of distress crackle so used crackle accents in my journal and also on a piece of cardstock using 2 different stencils. I think our DGS could have done better lol as it didn't crack and the photo doesn't show a thing except white...lol.

It may look as though I'm leading you up the garden path (as we poms say) but right now I haven't even opened the gate to get into the garden..lol.
Here's what they were like last night....

Moving on through the gate....I reread the challenge and saw it said thick crackle.....instead I decided to do some squirting and dabbing so you can see there is some crackle in there.....even though it's not exactly crackling. Tomorrow I'll add the next steps as late here...nite. I think I may call these in the garden and waiting for things to bloom...lol.
