Online classes/tutorials and sites, what do you recommend?
Thanks to Beth (bjeans) there's a group of us taking the online class, Simply Watercolor, here's a link to that thread K. Werners Watercolor Class.Other classes have been discussed that sound like fun too. That got me thinking. I'm sure there are many marvelous online classes, tutorials and sites out there. Bet we could get quite the list of resources with how good SCS members are at sharing!
I'm a big fan of Amy Shulke's Taste of Vanilla site and newsletter. I haven't taken any of her classes though.
Ive just signed up for this class at Kit and Clowder - only had chance to have a quick look at a couple of the video segments and a flick through the accompanying PDF but Im impressed with the way its put together. Her prices are in Australian dollars but you can see the US equivalents - this one is currently about 10 bucks.
I think the older classes have sale prices like this sometimes but even at regular price theyre not ferociously expensive and you get permanent access after buying a class as well as the chance to get individual support if you want it. She divides classes up by medium - alcohol markers, pencils, watercolours - so you can choose whats going to suit you. Although shes using a specific image for each class, my quick reccy says shes covering lots of fundamentals which can be applied whatever image you want to colour.
The only other class I have taken is Sandy Allnock’s basic Copic class. To be honest, I haven’t even finished it. I got to working with what I learned in the first two and paused. But so far, I definitely recommend it.
ETA: I feel like I should share that I already had about 70+ markers so I used those instead of trying to copy what she was using.
I went through my e-mails today to see what sites I've used and they're all OnlineCardClasses and The Frugal Crafter.
There is another site I had access to, skillshare.com, through a discounted offer. It has tons of classes for all kinds of things from how to brew a cup of perfect coffee to illustrating. I enjoyed most of the classes and If I had the time to do the classes instead of just watching them I would've paid for a yearly subscription once the discount ran out. My favorite classes were by a children's storybook illustrator teaching you how to draw your own characters and watercolor them.
Thanks for the recommendations. I'm slowly checking them out. It's day 3 of the Watercolor class and I'm still working on Day 1! Good thing it's not a limited time period to finish it.
Kit sand Clowder has just added a free colouring class using the gerbera image Cheryl used in this lovely card she posted yesterday. The image is also free from Power Poppy so if you wanted a no-risk way to try out the classes and see if Alyces style suits you, this could be it! Details of the class here.
I signed up with Craftsy unlimited to learn to crochet, but I think the papercrafting classes are well done too. It’s nice that you can ask questions and they get answered. I think they are geared toward beginner or intermediate papercrafters, but I learn something new each time.
Debby Hughes (limedoodle) will be hosting a class at onlinecardclasses regarding color theory. I signed up. I think her watercolor work is amazing so I'm really looking forward to this class. I want to learn how to mix colors so I don't have to have dozens of individual colors as that just overwhelms me. Right now the class is discounted to $14 but will go up to $16.

If people want to sign up with Sandy Allnock-she has been having tech issues-if you see the last part of this, she explains it so I would wait until after Oct 1st...
Joanne I have heard good things about Kit and Clowder. Have you taken other classes with them?
Sandy mentioned this one...people might like it. Annual Inktober challenge...and it is about to start.
Sandy says: Jake Parker has a page about rules but – pretty much anything goes! The whole idea is to draw every day of the 31 days this month. It’s great practice! Don’t worry if you can’t draw – just doodle! Drawing a little something every day helps us grow what skills we do have and that’s always a good thing. What to draw?
Like Jake says sometimes the hard part is thinking of something to draw – well he’s got that all ready for you! (Don’t like a word? See a previous year’s list HERE!) What medium?
Just a plain piece of paper and a pen works! Or markers. Or Sumi ink. Or whatever! Just fill a sketchbook with doodles! If you join in, let’s share our Inktober pieces in the Student Facebook Group – it’s a really encouraging group of fellow travelers on this artistic road. Let’s inspire each other!

Not technically an online class: I stumbled across some tutorials on youtube from a place called Let's Make Art. They have a monthly subscription consisting of 4 kits, BUT, you don't really need to buy the kits as they offer a download of the images to trace, give you the supply list, and do 2 different videos for each which are a tutorial and a paint-a-long. They go into great detail during the tutorials to include color mixing. I signed up for the monthly subscription and also ordered the kits for the fox, bunny, and squirrel. (I'm already feeling intimidated, lol)

I adore the Kit & Clowder classes! Alyce offers a growing variety of topics, and every class includes downloadable images specific to that particular class. You can work "right along with her" on the same image(s). One of my fave parts is that I can rewind to the spot I need, & replay over & over if I want! No "What did she say?" like in a real live class. Sweeeeeeeeeeet! No one is ready to ask me to leave and I'm not frustrated by missing out!
I've occasionally watch Dr. Oto Kano's YT videos and now she's doing a color theory series. She's done 2 videos so far on warm vs. cool and the split palette. I've learned so much in just these 2 videos.
I put a lot of pressure on myself worrying about warm vs. cool and being able to figure it out. Her video was a big help in explaining color temperature is a matter of personal perception and also depends on the colors you have.
The split palette video goes into color mixing and combining warm and cool colors.
Here's the links for the 2 in case anyone would like to check them out:
Alyce has added another free colouring class at Kit and Clowder, a pretty unicorn (there's also a pony version of the image availabe if you prefer something a bit less whimsical!). Again, the class covers fundamentals of light source etc and techniques for the mane would be great for colouring hair on other images. She covers both marker and pencil colouring and has a lovely, encouraging style of teaching I think - definitely worth a look! I have no affiliation with C&K, I've just been impressed with the classes I've looked at.
I am a visual learner, so love You Tube and Video's!
In Liquid Color on You Tube does color swatches with Artist Grade watercolor paints- so you can compare colors, granulation, etc....she also tests the swatches for colorfastness..... She paints animals, so her color palate is not exactly the one I would choose, but love seeing the side by side swatches.
For Mixed Media, there is a yearly video series called Creative Jumpstart I like to watch and it includes a variety of artists giving tutorials or creative ideas. Here is the like.
And, of course, who doesn't love Jennifer McGuire : )
I like skillshare.com classes. There's a ton of them and lots of variety. I also like craftsy.com classes... I think they may have changed their name, though.

Yes, Craftsy just changed their name. They are now Bluprint.com There is a free special going right now, if I understand correctly. I went to the sight, but had difficulty figuring out if the classes I have paid for will be available without a subscription. I loved the classes I found on Craftsy.

I thought I'd give an update on my quoted comment - I've done a few of this company's/artist's tutorials and I'm pleasantly surprised at my success! So much so that it gave me the courage to tackle one of Lindsay Weirich's classes AND create my own painting. In case any of you would like to take a look at my work, this is a link to my Pinterest Board where I've posted the paintings:
Debra, your paintings are beautiful! I love the giraffe. I took a watercolor class from a friend this fall, enjoyed it thoroughly and learned a few tips. You're inspiring me to get back into it. I'll have to look at Lindsay's classes.
I followed your Pinterest watercolor board so I can see more of your creations. I also enjoyed looking at the cards you've made.

Aww, thank you so much, Carla, that truly means a lot to me. I'm very proud of the paintings, I honestly didn't think I could do it and was so proud when I did the first one (the bee). Its amazing how just one success in a sea of failures can give you the confidence to try again.
All the paintings are from Lets Make Art except the swan and the fawn. You can go to Lets Make Art's website and download the outlines for free, like the giraffe, and paint along to their youtube videos. The links are all contained on the kit page for each image. (As a matter of fact, my giraffe was done that way as I didn't have the kit)
The February kit is all ocean related (turtle, octopus, jellyfish, and beach sunrise/sunset - I can't wait!)
I still have trouble doing wet-in-wet which was the main technique for Lindsay's swan. My spirits sank when I heard that but I soldiered on and think its not too bad. (Lindsay had put up for sale her original swan painting that she did for the class and I bought it. I have to figure out how to save the instruction video to an SD card so I can slip it into the frame)
Thank you again for your kind words. Happy painting!
Debra
Amy Shulke of Vanilla Arts is one of my favorites. Here's a marvelous video with face coloring tips.
Carla,
Thanks for sharing. I'm now exploring her other videos and can see why you're a fan. Her color theories and explanations are very informative. I use Spectrum Noirs and always have trouble with skintones so I invested in a bunch of Copic skin tones (and I have the mentioned Prismacolors) so this should be helpful. I'm sure I can relate most of her technique to the Spectrum, too.
Betsy Veldmen at The Greetery is doing a watercolor video series this week. Yesterday she went over the supplies she uses, and today was planning out your design. The watercoloring begins tomorrow.
Carla, Thanks for reminding me of that. I had it open in a tab but my battery ran out and when I booted up again I didn't restore my tabs, completely forgetting about the video!
The Frugal Crafter has a new watercolor landscapes course which is currently at half price ($39.99).
She posted a free tutorial and will be doing a live chat tonight (7/3/19) at 5p EST.
I signed up as I've become a collector of Frugal Crafter course and have actually done a couple. This is one I did from the watercolor birds:
Lindsay put her original painting of this swan up for sale and I bought it!
I like her courses because I can do them when I feel inspired and have the time and she will answer your questions/give feedback even if the course was first offered years ago.
