Default Stampin up ink pads, old

A long time ago when Stampin Up had the felt ink pads there was a problem with the red ink pads. I never had a problem with them. I never replaced the old felt pads. Now I find I have a problem (like there is a golden color to it) with several of the reds especially Cherry Cobbler. I was wondering if these are still usable or should I just toss them. I noticed that the old In Color Raspberry Ripple that was the newer pad is also slightly mis-colored. I haven't bought from Stampin Up for several years now. They are just not my style anymore.

They are still usable, provided there's enough juiciness to get a good image. I did have one pad harden in one spot with the crud, but just the one. I didn't, however, re-ink any of them when they were dry, opting just to replace them.

I have had my red ink pads, old linen style, for 13 years. About three years ago, I got that golden sheen on one of them in a corner but my pad still worked fine. Today, both of my red ink pads have the golden sheen and it has spread to the point that one of the pads needs replaced since it will no longer absorb reinkings.

I say, if you can still reink your red pads and use them to stamp a good image, then keep them. I use things until I can no longer repair them to good working condition. I can't say my tools look pretty, shiny, and new but that doesn't bother me - I love things to look well-loved!

StampinUp carries nice quality products. I wish I could see more single layer cards or cards with just one panel added. I might be inclined to purchase more from them.
I start counting the layers and see 8 at times. Maybe it is to sell more stuff. All those layers seem out dated......to me. Then again, never was my style.

Back to ink......SU will hopefully get into the cube market. Seems to be all I use now.

Scrape the top surface of the ink pad with plastic pot scraper (or a credit card might work, though it doesn’t have beveled edge like scraper). Get all the gunk & crusty Crystals off the top surface of the ink pad. Then take a paper towel and gently but firmly wipe the top surface of the pad. Wipe out the inside of the lid, as well, to get rid of Any traces of old ink.
Then reink the pad with reinker (hope, hope, hope you have this!). Allow the ink to saturate the pad for several hours before using.

I was able to rescue a couple of old favorite red SU pads doing this. Keep in mind that new SU reinkers are a different formulation than the old ones (for sure the SU red Inks formulas were changed, not certain about other colors).
If you don’t have a reinker, you can try a product by Ranger called Ink Refresher (name may have been changed in last year or so, but it is still available.). It comes in 4 oz spray bottle and I found it at Hobby Lobby not that long ago.
Good luck with the rescue operation!

Didn’t SU demonstrators say we could use old reinkers on new pads?
Thought I had seen that when all the hoopla started on new pads.

Most of them, yes, but I believe there were about four colours, where it was recommended not to do this. There'll be threads about it somewhere but it's not easy to search while on a phone. I'm pretty sure red was one of the no's, as Susy says.

When SU! switched from the linen pads to the firm foam pads, these color formulas were no longer compatible and the old re-inkers could not be used on the new foam pads:

Tempting Turquoise
Marina Mist
Perfect Plum
Basic Gray
Basic Black

All of these colors have since retired with the exception of Basic Black.

I am talking about REALLY old ink pads and reinkers, not ones within the last couple of years. About 10 years ago (guessing, since its been a while), SU totally redid the formulation of a couple of the red Inks that they had this crystal/yuck problem with. At that time I sent back a couple of my pads and got new reinkers. Since then, SU has changed their case design twice and have tweaked their Inks a number of times.
(As an aside, they also reformulated Tempting Turquoise after the redink went wonky....dont know what the problem was with that color, but I picked up old pads/reinkers from my demo and they are still good.)

So yes, you can still use old reinkers on new SU pads, with the exception of a couple of the Reds and Tempting Turquoise. I didnt mention the specific Reds that were an issue because in all honesty I cant remember which ones they were! I do know it was way before Raspberry Ripple was available, so I would say if you have the reinker for it, use it and it will be fine!

Just remember that it is a mold, so clean your stamp really well before using it on another color or you may cross-contaminate.

We may be talking about different issues. The weird shiny coating, crystals and crusting are not mold. We were told that it was a chemical reaction/degradation that occurred with certain formulas of ink over an unspecified period of time.

I've had the sheen on a few reds but just keep using them. My Real Red has been spared So far.

Ridinghood Red is one of the reds. I just discovered mine was all crystallized. It was really bad. I tossed it & found a new one on ebay.

Recently went to use my cajun craze linen pad and it had the golden hue to it now. I have added more ink refill and hope it helps.

That was the first one of mine affected. I am so sad because I love the linen pads!

My Rasperry Ripple was discovered to have gone bad this weekend too. Unfortunately, I don't have a reinker for this one so into the trash it goes.
I scraped up some of the little "beads" and they were totally gold so it's just the same problem reds seem to have.

That is what mine looks like. I thought this wasn't supposed to happen with the newer pads. Since it was an in color can't replace it.
