Hey there stampers!! One of the hallmark of summer days both in my childhood and now as an adult is watching the man of the house cooking at the grill. I know, I know...it's 2018, and women can grill too! But the memories of my dad cooking burgers and steaks on his gas grill all year (even in a northern Illinois snowstorm!) makes me smile...and now my hubby enjoys cooking steaks, shish-ka-bobs, pork chops, and veggies for me and friends when we have company during a Staycation. One thing Bruce likes to do is make sure the food looks good with grill lines, perhaps criss-crossed.

My challenge has 2 components; choose one OR both.
1) Make a masculine themed card that is inspired by grilling... colors, images, whatever inspires you!
2) Use SCORE LINES somewhere on your card...anywhere!

Challenge Title: Involuntary Staycation

When I was teaching, summers were supposed to be either trainings or traveling. Eh! Often, and especially as my career was winding down, they were time for surgeries: hysterectomy, lumpectomy, reconstruction, skin cancer. Even after retirement, I had two more surgeries (both shoulders), during the summer. Well, technically one was in autumn, after a summertime accident. Crazy times.

Anyway, I was sort of forced to use my summer breaks for recovery. Medically enforced staycations.

Do you know someone who is limited by illness, accident or surgery?

I love to read. In fact, I would rather sit and read a book than go to a party. I can read a complete book in one sitting, if it isn't too long. The type of books I enjoy most are historical romance, especially those set in the regency period. Most historical fiction authors try to keep the history and the geography as accurate as possible, which means you can travel all over the world just by reading.

Another favorite of ours is to go walking the paths in the nearby woods.

Challenge Title: Soap Bubble Art

Summer isn't complete without kids blowing bubbles. But add some color, and Wow! For this project, I saw many different tutorials with different tips. They all include some basics:

1) Water - unless you use the actual bubble stuff
2) Liquid dish or hand soap, or liquid bubbles that kids use outdoors. I used hand soap.
3) Paint, either colored or white with some color added.


This is a FUN and MESSY technique, but kids will love it! Even those who are almost 53 years old like me! If weather cooperates, try this outside. Old t-shirts recommended for the little ones to wear. **Drying time is NOT included in your 1 hour VSN time limit.**

IF you do this with kids, please use NON-toxic tempera paints and or food coloring. Make sure kids can blow into the straw, not suck the liquid up. If your kid is too young to do that, I recommend the adult blow the bubbles and the child hold the paper over the bubbles to make the design.

I started with a white acrylic paint and added drops of SU ink. But I wanted a more intense color, so I added some colored distress paint. How much? I definitely had too much water in my first attempts. I just added color to get a decent shade. I didn't measure. I forgot what the video below shows! :rolleyes:

I used 10 oz plastic cups, but smaller cups would work so you wouldn't have to wait so long for the bubbles to reach the top. I used thick card stock, because it needs to handle the moisture. Water color paper would probably be a better option. Thanks to my fellow hostesses for making samples!

Holiday World & Splashin' Safari (also known as Santa Claus Land prior to 1984) is a combination theme park and water park located near Interstate 64 and U.S. 231 in Santa Claus, Indiana, United States. The theme park is divided into four sections that celebrate Christmas, Halloween, Thanksgiving and the Fourth of July with rides, live entertainment, games, and attractions. So if I am doing a Staycation I am going to Holiday World.

My husband and I and our youngest daughter are having a staycation this summer while our two older daughters take an overseas trip with their grandparents. We told A to make a list of all she wanted to do, see, and experience during her time as an only child. Some of the things on her list are:

• seeing a Pittsburgh Pirates baseball game
• having a milkshake at The Milkshake Factory
• taking a Ducky Tour
• going miniature golfing
• visiting a new-to-us ice cream shop
• spending a day at Sandcastle, Pittsburgh's water park

Challenge Title:Lemony Yellow

At our house, we are master of the economical vacation! We do go on a big vacation every few years but camping or staycations are what we do the most of the time. I am afraid I have never been very clever about our staycations. I simply want to go to a movie, take a day trip to our favorite gardens and eat out several times but when I heard the summer VSN theme was going to be "Staycation", I googled it! There are a lot of fabulous ideas on how to make staying home a fun adventure!

One of the ideas that several blogs had in common was to place glass pitchers in strategic spots in your house filled with ice water and lemons slices like they have in fancy hotels. Keep some cups near the pitchers and when you walk by pour yourself a drink! Another idea to freshen up the house is to toss a few lemon slices in a pan of water and simmer for a couple of hours.

Challenge:
My challenge to you is to create a card with yellow as the main attraction, black and white are permitted but no other colors. This is not a lemon challenge even though I was inspired by lemon water but you most certainly can feature lemons if you would like! I can't wait to see a gallery full of cheerful yellow!

Challenge Title: Going To The Zoo

Good Evening & Welcome to this VSN Staycation Challenge! Staycations at our house when the kids were small was going to the zoo, and taking a picnic lunch and making a day of it! We even continued it with the grands! I have so many lovely memories of these times. There was the time going through the tropical bird area when the bird landed on my head! Scared the you know what out of me! LOL And the time that our grandson of about two, sitting in his stroller, pointed to a spot on the map he was holding and said "we haven't seen this one yet!" What? How can he know that? LOL I have lots of photos over the years of our kids in adorable poses with the animals. So, who doesn't have a favorite animal at the zoo?

Good Evening & Welcome to this last VSN Staycation Challenge for this event.

The local news station has been doing a series of Stories the last two or three years when the weather gets nice called "Tank of Gas Getaways" the idea being that there is a lot to see around here that the investment for you is a tank of gas for your vehicle maybe lunch for the day. So, where I live in So. Oregon, I am 20 Miles north of the California Border and I could make it to the Pacific Ocean easily also. We are surrounded by National Forests, various lakes, rivers & waterfalls. For instance the county I live in also has Crater Lake National Park one of the "7 wonders of the world". It is a visible reminder that there really is a lot to see here. and I'd bet there is where you live too.

So, that is the challenge, show me something you can visit from your home on a single tank of gas (roundtrip) AND OR the vehicle you would take down a road to get there.

If you do not drive or own a vehicle that is OK take a wild guess what is withing say 250 miles of your home and that would work for most gas guzzling vehicles to make a trip of that distance and back.
