Default Selling on Etsy

Does anyone here sell handmade cards on Etsy? I need to generate some more income and Im wondering if thats worth it.

I don't, but I do know that effective July 16, their rates are increasing to 5% of your item's sale price PLUS shipping.

The fees on Etsy are pretty high in relation to what you can sell a card for.

Emily, Do you mean that they take 5% of your shipping charges too?

Not so much take from you as bill you for, but yup.

I think (but didn't read too carefully) that it's to avoid having sellers build their profit margin into the shipping instead of the cost of the item. (eBay does the same thing.)

I have been selling some of my cards on Etsy.(Wish I had time to list more of them!) I can't really say I am making a profit if I consider the time spent making each card and listing each card. But it sort of gives me an extra reason to continue spending time on my hobby and I guess the sale covers the basic supplies (I hope).

are you on facebook? If you are then post them on your personal page and let people know to message you if they are interested in purchasing any of them. I've sold quite a few this way but I have a pretty large circle of FB friends (somewhere around 400).

You could also start a business page on FB and ask all of your friends to follow your page. From a business page you can set up a store where you can list things for sale sort of etsy style but simpler/more streamlined than etsy.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I'm thinking it's probably not worth the effort.

I know a few ladies who sell their cards on Facebook..I actually have been thinking of setting up an album of cards for sale. It would just be to generate a few bucks...there will never be a profit...lol.

I tried to sell those "regular" cards via Etsy, eBay and then farmers markets. I did not so great. A few years into it I started making sarcastic cards and now I sell 2500 per season doing two markets. You do have to put out money to start up, fee, tent, table, etc. but now I love doing it and it keeps me busy all the time.

Just wanted to chime in here again. I don't know if Etsy recently changed things, but I recently listed a few cards again and was excited when I made a sale.

But.....
I charged $3.95 for the card and I am receiving only $1.63 in profit. That means etsy is taking more than half of the cost of the card. I don't sell my cards to make lots of $$, but really .... I don't even get half of what I charge??!!! I was already done with selling on ebay before, now I sad to say I am done with etsy!

Found some info on a site called "zibbet" and listed a few of my cards there. We will see how that goes....I started with their free account.

If I'm remembering correctly, Lydia (UnderstandBlue) sold on Zibbet...

If you listed multiple items, but have only sold one so far, it looks like they may have deducted all of your current outstanding shop fees from the current sale.

Just a guess.

Thanks for bringing this up, I think this was the case with this transaction after looking again at the sales statement. I feel like in the past the listing fees for items were just taken out of my linked bank account at time of listing (I could be wrong though.)

So just to clarify again (in case anyone is interested), it looks like for this specific card I sold for $3.95 etsy took $1.01. I guess that isn't as bad as I thought.

Yes, Etsy changed the payment system, they now take out any fees you owe when you make a sale. I personally like it since I usually don't have a bill to pay at the end of the month now.

I tried for a little bit but it's hard to find people willing to pay for nice, quality work. Didn't make much. I've had better luck locally at small stores.

I agree it's better this way, now that I know I have already paid listing fees for all the cards I have listed. I should have kept up to date with their changes, but just list a few cards here and there so I didn't inform myself properly.

I keep making notes to myself to get a FB page set up for cards, as well as poundcake (sold a lot of cake over the holidays). I keep a stash of cards at work and a coworker has come in a couple of times to buy a few. Just need a few extra dollars I can stash away.
