I'm Your hostess this week and I wanted to share a French tradition to celebrate the 1st May which is also Labour Day in France. The tradition of offering lilies of the valley "muguet" dates back to 1st May 1561, when King Charles IX of France received a lily of the valley as a lucky charm. He created the tradition when he decided to offer a lily of the valley each year to the ladies of his court. At the beginning of the 20th century, it became custom on the 1st of May, to give a bunch of lily of the valley to relative, friends or work colleagues. The flowers are a more general token of appreciation between people. A school pupil might offer a bunch of lilies to his/her favorite teacher.
So you know now we're used to give a sprig of Lily-of-the-Valley on the 1st May to bring luck, you can buy these Lily-of-the-Valley in the streets from people or children who gathered them in the woods, or in a flower shop of course.
CHALLENGE:
My challenge is to make a card using May flowers or something that might bring luck.
DESTINATION STATION:
This week, we'll be sending birthday wishes to Eleanor in West Virginia. Eleanor is a special lady that Jacqueline personally knows - the mother of a dear friend. Eleanor will be celebrating her 90 th birthday on May 19; however, she is very young 90...still takes care of her own house, participates in church activities and is a Pittsburgh Steelers fan. Jacqueline thought it would be a great surprise for Eleanor to receive cards from all over the country (world) for this milestone birthday. Eleanor likes the color peach, flowers, dogs and is religious.
Send your cards to:
Eleanor Cooper
1078 Virginia Ave.
Follansbee, WV 26037
Be sure to useKEYWORD MMTPT510 in your upload and post a comment here so we can all see your card! Do you know someone that could use some well wishes, encouragement or all around warm fuzzies? Consider nominating them as a guest of honor (a.k.a. destination station) for an upcoming tea party. Post your request HERE or send a PM to jacqueline.
Just wanted to say again it's not a must to use lily of the valley flowers, just any other flower will be fine and if you look at what Eleanor likes you can find maybe other inspiration!!
I hope you'll come and play

Anita... Eleanor received your card and was so surprised and excited to have received a card from France! Her daughter told me Eleanor told her all about the beautiful card she received but was confused because she didn't know anyone from France. Nancy told her about the Teaparty and Eleanor is now so excited to check the mail for more cards. :-)
Thanks for the beautiful inspiration from the teapot and your cards, Anita! Here are some lilacs for Eleanor, WT686, MMTPT510 Happy Birthday Eleanor. I'll get this in tomorrow's mail.

She already received my card?? that's too early now...usually my cards take between 2 or 3 weeks to arrive, but I'm happy she liked it
Eleanor was so very surprised to receive all the lovely birthday cards. Each day, cards would pop up in her mailbox. Her birthday was this past Saturday. I got a message from her daughter who told me Eleanor sorted through all her cards...she received a total of 55 cards (from SCS folks as well as some of her friends) from 5 different countries! She was beyond excited and surprised.
Thank you all for helping make Eleanor's birthday a special and memorable one.
