Default TLC687 ~ Black Ice ~ {04/26/2018}

Happy Monday, everybody. It's Sabrina here as your hostess this week. Actually I'm away for a long weekend, so please excuse me if I don't come and comment on your creations till tomorrow or Wednesday. But I'll be checking the thread a couple of times in case there are any questions.

I originally had a different technique lined up for today, one of the recent tutorials from the Weekly Inkling. But a couple of weeks ago I added a beautiful card by Manetta to my favourites, to remind me to look into this technique. And then I noticed that Denise had been inspired by a different upload in the gallery to try the same technique - so a quick switcheroo and this week I thought we would try the Black Ice technique.

There are plenty of videos out there, but as the technique was invented by Melissa Kerman, I thought it was most suitable to share her video with you here.

You will need metallic/foil cardstock cut to a size to suit your stamp, and a suitable ink such as StazOn or Ranger's Archival Black. You will also need Versamark and clear embossing powder.
Distress the edges of the silver panel with Archival or StazOn ink.
Stamp the image with the same ink.
Allow to dry completely.
With a very, very light touch, drag Versamark pad down the piece. Essentially you are not adding any pressure, just let the edge of the pad touch the card and lightly drag it down. Watching the video is helpful to understand this step.
Emboss with clear embossing powder.
Finish your card.

Suggestions and tips:
I think any light metallic/mirri/mirror card will do. I used both gold and silver and liked the look on both. I bet if you had a champagne colour it would be gorgeous!

It's IMPORTANT to let the Archival or Staz-On ink dry before moving to the Versamark stage. If you don't, you'll end up with black ink on your Versamark - and I already have plenty of not-so-clean Versamarks.

As you are stamping on a slick surface, if you're not using a stamp positioner, make sure not to smudge your image. I always like to use a stamp-a-ma-jig on anything slick!

Pay attention to the way Melissa describes just letting the weight of the Versamark pad rest on the card - you need to drag it down with a very, very light touch to get the slightly beaded black ice look rather than an all-over layer of embossing powder.

You can, if you like, emboss a line-art image onto the cardstock, then colour with alcohol-based markers and then add the "ice" finish.

And finally - anyone who has tried it will know that it's so much prettier in real life and really hard to photograph - so don't stress your photo! I have included attachments with two different angles for my cards, though I'm only uploading one photo for each into the gallery.

I did try experimenting with aluminium foil stuck to thin card, for those of you who don't have any metallic foil/mirror card. I got a moderately good result in terms of getting the slightly beaded iced look, but I found it very hard (call that impossible) to get a mirror-smooth surface, and whatever adhesive I used (spray mount), when I heated the piece to melt the embossing powder, the adhesive seemed to lose its hold and what had (finally) been a smooth surface for stamping on ended up a bit wrinkled. If you feel like experimenting it wouldn't be a total waste of time, but the results won't be the same. See sample below...

Foil stuck to thin card:

Silver and gold mirror card.

Remember to use the keyword TLC687 when you are uploading. It's helpful (to the hostesses for sure!) if you come back and leave a link on this thread .

If you're not sure how to link your card on the thread here, here's how:

1. Open 2 windows or tabs: one window for your card and one for this thread.
2. In this thread, click on reply and type anything you want to show before the link.
3. Go to your card window. Highlight the address for your card. (It says www. splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/showphoto..... and so on)
4. Click EDIT. Click COPY
5. Go back to this thread. Click PASTE

Posting slightly early, I'm in a different time zone to normal. I'll check in a couple of times but won't be able to comment till Tuesday when I'm back home from work. Have fun... I did. Even with my fail.

Great timing Sabrina. This is what I am teaching in my classes this week.

I won't put the class sample up until after the event, but here is another that I did using Champagne foil.

has anyone tried this enough times to know if you need a juicy versamark pad or a very well loved one? ( thinking to try a loved version pad first since its already dirty...)
and no hurries, I am running out the door to work in a few but, I am sure I will over think about this for a while

Stacy, I used a newish pad for the two flower ones and... because that one got lost on my desk...an old one for the butterfly and aluminium foil tryout. My thoughts are that if it's still ok for embossing it will be fine for this.

Here's a couple of cards I made quickly yesterday evening using this technique. The first one didn't work that great, but I'm happy with the second one.

Thanks for the challenge Sabrina. Enjoyed it. Happy Tuesday everyone

Stacy I would recommend using an old pad. I used mine which isn't that old and it ended up becoming very black. Have fun...it's a great technique. I think the secret is to run the black pad lightly...I was a little heavy handed LOL. Happy day

Here's mine Icicle Wishes, I changed the colour from black to Tranquil Tide then substituted that to Distress Ink - Pine Needles as I didn't have the Tranquil Tide ink pad, the colours are almost identical.
I really love the effect I got, it really does look icy

I just tried this using an aluminum can I ran through the BIG shot to cut the shape--stamped on the plain inside surface. It turned out really nice! I'll post my card when I finish it.

I thought this would probably work! But I use very few soda cans, which was why I tried aluminium foil on card to offer an alternative. Thanks for trying this out, look forward to seeing your card.

Bought this silver foil card stock a couple day ago and finally got to play. Not easy but fun. Glad I gave it a go because this turned out rather fun.
