Today begins the Christmas Bird Count, "the nation's longest-running citizen science bird project" according to the Audubon. This year mark's the 118th Christmas Bird Count which runs from today until January 5th.
The Christmas Bird Count is an early winter bird census and anyone can join. If you are a beginning birder, you must join a circle with an experienced birder. (Our 6th grade teacher is likely skipping our annual staff Christmas Party in favor of participating in the Christmas Bird Count).
The purpose of the Christmas Bird Count is provide population data for science, especially conservation biology.
I'm sure that you have surmised by now that we are using birds on today's card. Let's boost the bird numbers in this week's gallery!

What a really interesting write-up, Toni! One of my cousins has a daughter who works in the ornithological field, and my aunt often sends me photos of her ringing or counting birds in exotic locations.
I have friends who are AVID world-wide birders....so I know where they are today. We're on the Mississippi flyway. My card will go to them most likely as a thank you or b'day card. Thanks!
Toni, love your card and the all the others, too! We have taken part in the annual bird count in years past. We don’t get as many cardinals as we used to get in our backyard. Not sure why. Great challenge. I hope to play!
Toni- great challenge! Went with an owl themed card, with a wreath my central image. Added an over sized sentiment, and added lots of owls! I used 2 wash tape borders, and a simple knotted twines border. Here's Owl Gathering
