Oh, ME TOO! The last couple of years I've tried doing the 'word of the year' kind of thing... I pick one word that is meaningful and suggests what I want to do/improve/focus on/or just start... that way there's not really any specific goal or plan -- because for me too, those backfire big time.
One example was a couple years ago, I chose 'release' as my word. For me it meant letting go of things, habits, people, or whatever felt like it was weighing me down. I did pretty well that year! This year's word was 'strive' which was apparently too intimidating of a choice for me and didn't really help at all and somehow even though it's a general verb, felt like a specific goal to me
