Default TLC658 ~ Everything Old is New Again: Acrylic Distress ~ {10/02/2017}

First Monday in a new month means it's time to get old again. This time I have chosen to revisit the Acrylic Distress tutorial, which was in the Weekly Inkling in April 2010, and subsequently featured as TLC365 in February 2012. It's a technique which I use on an occasional/regular basis, great for creating an interesting textured background.

For this background technique, you need card, acrylic paint, distress/dye inks, an embossing folder and a sanding block. Plus, sorry about this, it's another technique where a little drying time is required for the acrylic paint. But no worries - paint your piece of card and then go off and do something else!

Here's a link to the tutorial: Acrylic Distress.

Top tip: You do need to use a reasonable weight of cardstock for this, because of the sanding stage. Don't worry about getting the embossing sanded down so much that it shows totally white, we are going for a distress look here. In all the times I have tried this, I've neve, everr got my sanded area looking as white as Beate shows in the tutorial! You just need to get enough paint off for the exposed card to "take" the ink.I often find it easier to sand it if I keep the card in the open embossing folder.

Because of the layer of acrylic, when you add colour to the sanded area, don't worry if you do also get some on the paint, it will wipe off with a baby wipe. This technique works best with relatively detailed embossing folders with an all-over pattern.

Have fun!

Remember to choose Technique Spotlight from the first drop-down option, and Acrylic Distress from the sub-gallery options when you are uploading - this is much appreciated.

Here are my cards. I've just uploaded two to start with, the Christmas mice shown in the attachements will get uploaded later in the week. I thought one Christmas card was enough ;-).

 Remember to use the keyword TLC658 when you are uploading. It's helpful (to the hostesses for sure!) if you come back and leave a link on this thread .

If you're not sure how to link your card on the thread here, here's how:

1. Open 2 windows or tabs: one window for your card and one for this thread.
2. In this thread, click on reply and type anything you want to show before the link.
3. Go to your card window. Highlight the address for your card. (It says www. splitcoaststampers.com/gallery/showphoto..... and so on)
4. Click EDIT. Click COPY
5. Go back to this thread. Click PASTE.

I've done this one before, but I don't have one in the gallery, so I'm excited to do it again! I'll get started first thing in the morning! Thanks, Sabrina!

Had to laugh about drying time. Found my coloured tissue that I had left to flatten under a pile of heavy card yesterday.

I don't think I've ever done this technique..it looks cool. Maybe I can do part of it before I go volunteer since it requires drying time...then finish it later.:p I might have to do a snowman card since seeing your sample Sabrina ;)

Well, I had to push all my crafting stuff together in craft room to make room for son who will be here for two nights since he's having major dental work done tomorrow. I'm going to try to squeeze in there somehow to get this done and a card for my granddaughter. Sounds funny saying granddaughter, but they've been married two weeks now, so I've got grandkids!

"Distressed" is not my usual style but fun to try something new (to me). I tried 3 different folder and color combos but unlike what the tutorial said when I tried to wipe away the smears it did not lift from the acrylic but just smeared a little more . . . I'm wondering if this is because all my acrylic paints are MATTE Finish and perhaps this works better with a glossy finish acrlic???? I forged ahead anyhow and here is my offering for the challenge:

Sabrina- a most worthy challenge, thank you! I substituted acrylic nail polish to put over my embossed die cut panel, sanded it, then stained it with dark brown ink. My vintage SU images are from my stamping buddies, as is my recycled paper strip background. Here's brewhaha witch
