Help with metal edged tags

Have any of you had much luck with using parts of the metal edged tags in your cards and scrap book pages? In my card posted here I cut up the tag and used just the corners.

I'm wondering if anyone has discovered a tool that works well for this or any other great tips on how to do this easier. I did get it pried apart eventually but it was awkard and probably dangerous! I love the look of it but want it to be less awkward. KWIM?

I love your card and the metal corners just make the whole look!! I have done the corner thing but can't find a "safe" way to remove the inside either. I have used the large circle tag with a circle punched out of the center...very cute...goes perfectly with the retro look of Simply Circles. Otherwise, I punch the shape in a different color and layer it on top of the metal tag. I have also used a knife to cut out the inside...it helps to glue dot the tag down to your surface and rotate the surface instead of your knife. It seems like I always have some paper still showing--oh how that BUGS me!!

Hi Kathleen,
I did some cards up using the tags like you did and found if I held the corner of the tags with my needle nose plyers and then cut in diagonally first then cut out the center with the paper snips scissors, I had more luck and wasn't so dangerous to do it. HTH

Thanks ladies. I can get the paper inside of the tag out ok. I just have a difficult time prying open the metal tag so that I can fit it over another piece of card stock. The little bits of tag can really add to a project but it's kind of a pain to do. I'm hoping someone has a nifty tip or tool that does the trick.

I find that this technique works easier when done with the designer paper since it is thinner. That way you do not need to pry the metal open as much! I do use a knife and slide it along the opening of the tag. Certainly not that safe, but I try to be careful!

Instead of cutting up your metal edged tags, could you get the same effect using the metal foils that are available....

If you want to stay real narrow, whatever you use is not going to be easy, because you have so little to work with...

I know that Hobby Lobby and Michaels both carry the metal foils and it does come in different gauges.. Heavy duty alum foil might work it you're just going for "the look".

Your card looks great! I love what you did with the metal edge. Have you ever tried working with scrap metal? It is heavier them alum foil, comes in a ton of colors, and real fun to work with.
